In each section, the author tries to analyze the origin, history and characteristics of each game refering to ancient and old Persian literature. Traditional sports of Tajik people contribute as the symbol and identity of Persian culture at one hand, and at another, as the combination and synthesis of the Persian and Central Asian cultures. Central Asia has a rich history of the traditional sports and games, and significantly contributed to the sports world as the birthplace of many modern sports and games, such as polo, wrestling, chess etc. Unfortunately, this theme has not been yet studied academically and internationally in modern times. Few sources and materials are available in Russian, English and Central Asian languages, including Tajiki.

Abstract Folk sports are the countertype of modern sports: invented traditions, bolstered by tangible ritual and intangible myth, played by the common folk in order to express a romantic ethnic identity. Like other cultural forms, traditional sports and games around the world are becoming marginalized in the face of modernization and globalization. In 2003, UNESCO ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in an attempt to counter such trends of cultural homogenization. As elements of intangible cultural heritage, folk sports now fall under the auspices of UNESCO safeguarding policies.

  • Introducing Afghanistan's Culture in Your Classroom
Afghanistan: Multidisciplinary Perspectives Introducing Afghanistan’s Culture in Your Classroom By Howard Faber Fall 2012 I am a middle school teacher who has also spent extensive time in Afghanistan, and I am the author of A Far Away Home, a work of juvenile fiction set in the country. The following essay is a pedagogical mosaic that introduces a variety of resources that have worked for me, which can potentially assist middle, high school, and university teachers and students to understand Afghanistan culture. Sport, Art, and Architecture Picture yourself sitting about halfway up the stands on the fifty-yard line at a college football game. The crowd is roaring because of the action on the field. Instead of a quarterback carrying a football, though, there is a rider on horseback carrying the carcass of a calf and trying to evade the opposing team’s efforts to take it away from him. You are at a buzkashi game (accent on the last syllable) in the Afghan capital of Kabul (accent on the first syllable) at the great outdoor Gauzi Stadium. Typically, buzkashi (“buz” means “goat,” but the game is played with a calf carcass) is played on a wideopen plain with no out-of-bounds markers. When the rider is cornered, it is no surprise to spectators in the stands that he jumps the low wall surrounding the track around the grassy soccer field and starts up into the bleachers. The people in the stands move right and left to avoid him. The rider gets so close that you can see his wide eyes; his sweaty horse; his kneehigh, long-heeled boots; and his calloused hands.
