Jules writes in various genres, his father predicting a future as a ‘savant’. 1843 Collège royal de Nantes, but missing a year’s studies. 1844–6 In love with his cousin Caroline. Writes plays and short prose pieces. Easily passes baccalauréat. 1847 Studies law in the Latin Quarter. Fruitless passion for Herminie Arnault-Grossetière, dedicating her scores of poems. 1848–9 In the literary salons meets Dumas père and fils, and perhaps Victor Hugo. Opening the Sources of The Kip Brothers: A Generic Interpretation Brian Taves ABSTRACT Jules Verne’s The Kip Brothers (Les Frères Kip, 1902) has typically been analyzed in several ways. It is viewed as a tribute to his late brother Paul; for its resemblance to the contemporary Dreyfus and Rorique Affairs; and for its concluding “science fiction”-style discovery of the reflection of the murderers in a photograph of the dead victim’s eyes. I propose a new interpretation of The Kip Brothers, examining how the conventions of the adventure formula are reflected in the novel’s narrative. Not only does it encompass adventure’s typical view of colonialism, but in a manner similar to Mathias Sandorf, The Kip Brothers is indebted to The Count of Monte Cristo by Verne’s mentor Dumas. Examining a specific type of adventure, the genre type with a maritime setting, The Kip Brothers follows the type’s pattern of illustrating injustice at sea and how it is overcome. The Kip Brothers echoes the fundamental example of the sea formula, the Bounty saga, a historical incident Verne had previously utilized as the basis for a short story. Similarly, James Cook, the explorer whose deeds occupied such a major part of the 18th century volume of Verne’s Discovery of the Earth: History of the Great Voyagers and Great Navigators (Découverte de la Terre. Histoire générale des grands voyages et des grands voyageurs), serves not only as the name of the principal vessel in The Kip Brothers but a yardstick by which the heroism, and the martyrdom, of the Kips and Captain Gibson are measured. -

Jones, Jr. Abstract From 1941 to 1971, the Classics Illustrated series of comic-book adaptations of works by Shakespeare, Hugo, Dickens, Twain, and others provided a gateway to great literature for millions of young readers. Jules Verne was the most popular author in the Classics catalog, with ten titles in circulation. The first of these to be adapted, Michael Strogoff (June 1946), was the favorite of the Russian-born series founder, Albert L. Kanter. The last to be included, Tigers and Traitors (May 1962), indicated how far among the Extraordinary Voyages the editorial selections could range. This article explores the Classics Illustrated pictorial abridgments of such well-known novels as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in 80 Days and more esoteric selections such as Off on a Comet and Robur the Conqueror. Attention is given to both the adaptations and the artwork, generously represented, that first drew many readers to Jules Verne. Click on images to view in full size. ABSTRACT Title of Document: CLAIMING INDIA: FRENCH SCHOLARS AND THE PREOCCUPATION WITH INDIA DURING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Jyoti Mohan, Doctor of Philosophy, 2010 Directed By: Professor Jeffrey Herf, Department of History My dissertation examines the image of India which was created by the French academics of the nineteenth century. This image of India was distinct from the British image of India partly due to the different intellectual and political traditions in France, as well as Anglo-French national rivalry and the position of France in India as a subordinate or ‗subaltern‘ colonizer. For instance, the French image of India was marked by its reliance on the spiritual and religious aspects of India, and its antiquity and ‗Aryan‘ heritage, while the British described India primarily as a land of Oriental despotism and oppressed masses alleviated only by British colonial rule. I have examined the specifically French creation of India by French writers from the early modern to the early twentieth century to demonstrate the history of French interest in India. I have also looked at the interest of scholars in different nineteenth century disciplines like philology, anthropology, history, and religion in creating a specifically ‗French‘ image of India in terms of race, caste and Hinduism. Editorial — The Verne Translation Renaissance Continues Arthur B. Evans Asked to write an editorial for Volume 5 of Verniana, I would like to give a brief update to the survey of Anglophone Vernian scholarship (1965-2007) that I contributed to Volume 1 of Verniana several years ago. [1] In particular, I’d like to take a moment to recognize those many scholars, fans, and publishers who have made 2008-2012 an especially rich period for new English-language translations of Jules Verne. Top kudos for recent translations must go to the indefatigable American Vernian from Albuquerque Frederick Paul Walter, not only for his impressive omnibus volume Amazing Journeys: Five Visionary Classics published in 2010 (containing new translations of Journey to the Center of the Earth, From the Earth to the Moon, Circling the Moon, 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas, Around the World in 80 Days) but also for his “first complete English translation” of Verne’s The Sphinx of the Ice Realm (also featuring the full text of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym) which appeared in 2012. Both were published by Excelsior Editions, an imprint of SUNY Press. Equally indefatigable is Brian Taves, president of the North American Jules Verne Society and editor of its excellent Palik Series. He continues to lead a talented team of translators (Edward Baxter, Kieran M. O’Driscoll, and Frank Morlock et al.) and world-class Verne scholars (Jean-Michel Margot, Volker Dehs, and Garmt de Vries-Uiterweerd et al.) in their quest to “bring to the Anglo-American public [...] hitherto unknown Verne tales” (see their website at http://www.najvs.org/palikseries-press.shtml). -

Evans ABSTRACT: This article discusses how Verne mythologizes and poeticizes his fictional machines. More than just a means for solving problems and/or for providing access to exotic geographical locales, Verne’s technology is portrayed as being intrinsically poetic. Bridging the worlds of the industrial and the artistic, Verne’s machines constitute a new kind of objet d’art. Anthropomorphized to make them seem less coldly mechanical, these devices take on a life of their own and exist in a richly symbiotic relationship with their creators. Such machines transport the readers of Verne’s Voyages extraordinaires beyond the mimetic, serving both as a means to build verisimilitude and as a stepping-stone to transcend the real. -

There’ll be a letter in the newest column, Vox-Haul & I, and some more that you’ll read about in future issues. I’ve heard from folks in the US, UK, Australia and China! That’s crazy! I’m proud to say that the team that we’ve managed to assemble is top-notch. I’ve attended two different Steampunk events over the last month. The first one was hosted by Jean Martin, my co-editor on Science Fiction / San Francisco. It was a mighty good time, with folks like Jean, Tom Becker (SF/SF’s Layout Guru), Andy Trembley, Kevin Roche (in his Tutbuck’s Barista outfit), Chris Erichson (with Maltese Falcon), Phil and Kathe Gust (as the Carnovans), Merv and Judith and ever-so-many more. It was a good time, especially being surrounded by Egyptologist stuff at the Rosicrucian Museum. The place has Mummies, Babylonian, Mesopotamian and Egyptian artifacts, and ever so much more. I love the museum and hanging out there with all the good folks in costume (and with photographers) made it well-worth visiting. I especially like the Nile Catfish mummy. There’s nothing cooler than mummified fish. The second was also at a museum, History San Jose, during an Antique Car Drive-In. I love History San Jose, I have since it was San Jose History Park and I’ve been back a number of times over the last few years. -

Hendrix Abstract Much of the critical discussion of the steampunk school in English-language science fiction and science fantasy rightly focuses on several Victorian roots of steampunk, but this focus should not eclipse the importance of Jules Verne to the development of steampunk. Given Verne’s broad and deep infiltration of Anglophone popular culture, I argue that the memes and motifs of the Verne corpus are at least as essential to the development of both steampunk and the extraordinary voyage as anything originating in nineteenth or early twentieth century English or American sources. Through this tracing of memes and motifs, I move beyond simply describing writers of Jules Verne pastiche who also happen to belong to the steampunk school – to defining, in a concrete way, what has long been presumed to be the “amorphous” influence of Verne on steampunk. Note to the readers (from the Editors): the concept of steampunk is well defined at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk.
