  • SOME EVIDENCE from 'YAMBUK', WESTERN VICTORIA Jan Critchett
A CLOSER LOOK AT CULTURAL CONTACT: SOME EVIDENCE FROM ‘YAMBUK’, WESTERN VICTORIA Jan Critchett The Western District of Victoria has been a favoured area of study for academics interested in the archaeology, prehistory and race relations aspects of our past. Corris, Reece, Christie, Barwick, Marcard, Massola, Critchett, Lourandos, Coutts, as well as others from the Victoria Archaeological Survey, have published work concerning the District. Yet despite the large amount of research undertaken there are many gaps in our knowledge. This is particularly so if one wants to know in detail of relations bet ween the two cultures, of anything more than the most general outline of racial con flict, or of Aboriginal responses, of adaptive behaviour by which Aborigines attempted to establish a new life-style for themselves. To find answers to such questions new sources will have to be examined. A source area so far neglected is the diaries and journals kept by many station owners and individuals. It is true that not all have been overlooked: a selected few have been over-worked. Yet there has been no systematic attempt to study these station by station. The aim of the piece of research which led to this paper was simply to take one such source, a fairly detailed one, recording events in a key area of the District and examine the extent to which it could throw further light on race relations and provide new details of Aboriginal culture. The main source used is the diaries of Annie Maria Baxter (later Dawbin).1 Annie was the wife of Lieutenant Andrew Baxter who in 1843 took up ‘Yambuk’, a small squatting property in the Western District of Victoria.

  • 21.05 Settlement and Housing Overview the Moyne
LOCAL PROVISION MOYNE PLANNING SCHEME 21.05 Settlement and housing Overview The Moyne Shire is made up of large tracts of rural areas and a number of towns and settlements. The predominant service centres in the Moyne Shire are Port Fairy, Koroit and Mortlake. Port Fairy is an historic coastal town that offers a high quality of life for its residents and is a popular tourist destination. Koroit is located near Tower Hill State Game Reserve and was originally established as a rural service town in which a major diary processing plant operated by Murray Goulburn is located on the edge of the urban area of the town. Mortlake is the main town and service centre in the northern part of the municipality. Apart from its service function, it is also home to industries including the Clarke’s Pies manufacturing base, a major council service centre and a regional quarry. Hawkesdale, Peterborough, Macarthur and other small service towns located throughout the Shire also provide a focus for much of the population. There are also a number of smaller settlements or rural hamlets including Caramut, Woolsthorpe. Woorndoo, Panmure, Garvoc, Kirkstall, Killarney, Cudgee, Nullawarre, Purnim, Yambuk, Orford and Framlingham. The historical townships and rural hamlets within the Shire give it a distinctive character. Population Characteristics As noted in 21.02 the Shire’s overall population has undergone gradual decline since 1981. This is reflected by the 1981, 1986, 1991 and 1996 Census which recorded permanent populations of 16,806, 16038, 16142 and 15,894 respectively for the area now encompassed by the Shire.

  • Common Birds of Port Fairy – Part 2
Common Birds of Port Fairy – Part 2 U3A Port Fairy Science Naturally! Common Birds of Port Fairy – Part 2. Philip Du Guesclin July 14 2020 This is the second in the series of Common Birds of Port Fairy- get out there and Enjoy! LITTLE PIED CORMORANT. Regularly seen along the Moyne River and Belfast Lough, this species can be found in saline and freshwater habitats. Similar species are the Pied Cormorant (much larger and rarer), Black-faced Cormorant (occurs offshore, breeds on Middle Is Warrnambool) and Little Black Cormorant. Cormorants are not “waterproof” so after feeding they need to perch with wings out to dry off. HOARY-HEADED GREBE. This species is usually found in open fresh and saline water (unlike the similar Little Grebe which is found in fresh water). Often seen on the Moyne River either singly or in groups, they dive for their food, usually invertebrates and the occasional crustacean. Despite their weak wings they can fly long distances, usually at night. 1 Common Birds of Port Fairy – Part 2 BLACK SWAN The Black Swan was first recorded by Europeans on the Swan River in WA in 1697. It occurs over most of Australia if conditions are suitable and can be found in fresh and saline waters. Sexes are similar; the male is larger than the female and his neck is slightly longer and thicker. They can be regularly seen on Belfast Lough and the wetlands in George Dodds and Russell Clark Reserves. They also breed on these wetlands and the Saltmarsh Reserve. A pair currently has a nest on the latter reserve.
