We have long recognized the importance of taking good care of our people and looking after our land; we understand that when our people and the communities in which we operate grow and prosper, so do we. This is now our second Annual Sustainability Report, and we make no apologies for any repetition. The quest for sustainability is never ending, and the same ground must be covered time and again. This report covers the consolidated activities of Ceylon Tea Services at Group level and follows the Global Reporting Initiative’s (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines at GRI Level C. As usual, we review progress against the sustainability targets we have set ourselves and set new targets that build on our achievements for future years. We continue to focus on the key areas of energy, water, waste, carbon emissions, biodiversity, product responsibility with society and our community engagement featuring prominently. Abstract This study covers industry analysis, financial analysis and market analysis of Nepal orthodox tea. It aims to evaluate the industry forces, analyze the financial performance of firms, and assess market potential. The study is based on field survey, key informants’ interviews, and participant observation in combination with data from secondary sources. The financial information of 65 tea processing firms was collected using standard financial formats. The production and trade related statistical data were obtained from National Tea and Coffee Development Board Nepal, Trade and Export Promotion Center Nepal, FAOSTAT, International Trade Center and STATISTA. The results of industry analysis indicate that in general, tea processors have low bargaining power against input suppliers and tea buyers. The processing industry was found to be less attractive for new entrants. The threat of substitutes was found to be low. But there is intense internal competition among processing firms for resources and markets. Limited and inefficient production, low economies of scale, unorganized supply chain system, limited access to global market are the major binding constraints identified by this study. The results of the financial analysis found positive returns of investment and increasing returns to scale. However, the average capacity utilization of the processing firms is found to be 33 percent.

The primary purpose of preparation of a city profile is to understand the current status of environmental resources in the city, the development activities and the nature of interaction between these two factors. It is neither scientific investigation nor a high profile technical report but it is a simple document, which tries to highlight the current problems relating to city development in the concerned area. It also emphasizes on a participatory decision making process to solve the identified problems in the city. This city profile can be further updated and improved continuously whereby the local authority staff would be able to improve their skills in preparing documents such as these, which are essential for decision making at city level and influencing the policy making authorities above them. In this context, this city profile may be considered as a first step towards developing a proper database for Wattala Mabole town supporting towards better management of its future development activities.

Project Profile and Japan’s ODA Loan India Sri Lanka Project Site Colomboコロンボ Sriスリジャヤワルダナプラコッテ Jayewardenepura Kotte The New Sri Lanka - Japan Friendship Bridge Project location map constructed under the project 1.1 Background Northern Colombo is an emerging commercial and industrial area. It is home to the Katunayake Export Processing Zone, the largest of its kind in Sri Lanka, and the Katunayake international airport, the only international airport in the country. It has attracted public attention as the most rapidly developing area in Greater Colombo. In northeast Colombo, meanwhile, there is the Biyagama Export Processing Zone, which forms a part of Greater Colombo and is expected to develop further in the future. Roads linking the city of Colombo with these areas cross the Kelani River, which runs through the northern end of the city. Initially, the three bridges over the Kelani were the Sri Lanka - Japan Friendship Bridge (four lanes), Victoria Bridge (two lanes for one-way traffic to Colombo) and New Kelani Bridge (six lanes), which is located approximately 1 km upriver. These bridges alone were inadequate and traffic was becoming increasingly congested. The traffic volume crossing the Kelani, which was 80,700 vehicles a day in 1993, was projected to increase at an annual rate of 4% in subsequent years and exceed the traffic capacity by 2001, thus further traffic congestion was expected. In addition, one of the major reasons for traffic congestion was the vehicle weight restriction which was applied on the 95-year-old superannuated Victoria Bridge.
