The Future of Robotics An Inside View on Innovation in Robotics FEATURE Robots, Humans and Work Executive Summary Robotics in the Startup Ecosystem The automation of production through three industrial revolutions has increased global output exponentially. Now, with machines increasingly aware and interconnected, Industry 4.0 is upon us. Leading the charge are fleets of autonomous robots. Built by major multinationals and increasingly by innovative VC-backed companies, these robots have already become established participants in many areas of the economy, from assembly lines to farms to restaurants. Investors, founders and policymakers are all still working to conceptualize a framework for these companies and their transformative Austin Badger technology. In this report, we take a data-driven approach to emerging topics in the industry, including business models, performance metrics, Director, Frontier Tech Practice and capitalization trends. Finally, we review leading theories of how automation affects the labor market, and provide quantitative evidence for and against them. It is our view that the social implications of this industry will be massive and will require a continual examination by those driving this technology forward. About the Author
ABOUT THE AUTHOR Dr. Arvind Sathi is the World Wide Communication Sector archi- tect for big data at IBM® . Dr. Sathi received his Ph.D. in business administration from Carnegie Mellon University and worked under Nobel Prize winner Dr. Herbert A. Simon. Dr. Sathi is a seasoned professional with more than 20 years of leadership in information management architecture and delivery. His primary focus has been in creating visions and roadmaps for advanced analytics at lead- ing IBM clients in telecommunications, media and entertainment, and energy and utilities organizations worldwide. He has con- ducted a number of workshops on big data assessment and roadmap development. Prior to joining IBM, Dr. Sathi was a pioneer in d eveloping k nowledge-based solutions for CRM at Carnegie Group. At BearingPoint, he led the development of enterprise integration, master data man- agement (MDM), and operations support systems / business support systems (OSS/BSS) solutions for the communications market, and also developed horizontal solutions for communications, fi nancial services, and public services. At IBM, Dr. Sathi has led several infor- mation management programs in MDM, data security, business intel- ligence, advanced analytics, big data, and related areas, and provided strategic architecture oversight to IBM’s strategic accounts. Governments should move from a market-failure-oriented to a system-failure-oriented approach to understanding this problem, and transform to an entrepreneurial state to motivate the Schumpeterian dynamics of open innovation. We want to answer the following research question in this study: “How can a government enact policies to conquer the growth limits imposed on the economy by inequality or the control of big businesses?” First, we conducted a literature review to establish the concept of building a causal loop model of basic income with open innovation dynamics. Second, we built a causal loop model which includes basic income and all factors of open innovation dynamics. Third, we proved our causal loop model through a meta-analysis of global cases of basic income. Our research indicates that reflective basic income with permissionless open innovation, capital fluidity, a sharing economy, and a platform tax can motivate open innovation dynamics and arrive at a method by which an entrepreneurial state can conquer the growth limits of capitalism. -

Put more simply: What is being exchanged, and who is confirming it? Yet commerce that was once direct and in-person is today conducted mostly online and requires intermediaries such as banks, governments, or other central authorities to verify the identity of each party and establish the needed trust between them. And whenever there are intermediaries there are inefficiencies – decreased speed, increased cost, and sometimes even fraud. Privacy, too, can be affected, and the centralized information stores of the intermediaries can be vulnerable to attacks. -

Hiring Skills, Not Diplomas
Right now, there are more than seven million open jobs in the U.S. That’s a historic number because, for the first-time since 2000, there are more job oppor- tunities in this country than there are people look- ing for work. Competition for talent is fierce. But employers face another major challenge in filling some of their top paying roles: a lack of candidates with the right mix of skills. That begs a question: How can companies do more to foster the next gen- eration of innovators? None of us can afford to put this off. The pace of progress in areas like AI and quantum computing is only going to accelerate, further exacerbating the urgent need for qualified workers. AI, in particular, is one of the greatest opportunities of our time but also one of the greatest challenges. This is not be- cause it will put some people out of work. Rather, it is because AI eventually will transform 100 percent of the jobs we know today in addition to creating entirely new roles and professions. The solution to the current and future skills chal- lenge must start with greater investment in the fu- ture of skills training and in teaching millions more people HIRING SKILLS, how to use the technologies that are rapidly reshaping our global economy. If superbrain Watson fails to bring about the turnaround, CEO Virginia Rometty will probably have to go. For Virginia Marie Rometty (59), called Ginni, the domination of the world is only a matter of time. At the end of October, at her in-house exhibition in Las Vegas, the chief executive of IBM announced that in five years her computer technology will influence “every decision” on this planet. The task for IBM's superbrain Watson is clear – it must solve “the biggest problems of the world.” In a few years, this market, called Cognitive Computing, is expected to be worth an incredible two trillion dollars. Rometty claims that more than one billion people will be using the in-house “moonshot” technology as early as 2017. The magic word is Artificial Intelligence (AI). With such a pitch a techie from the Silicon Valley would certainly have the chance for a life-sustaining venture capital shot.
