Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy Applying Attachment Theory in Clinical Settings presented by Sue Johnson, Ed.D. Overview EFT lead developer Sue Johnson introduces the transformative power of working with attachment patterns into the counseling of individuals. Based on her newest book, Attachment Theory in Practice, this workshop explores the idea that clients need to connect with others and that this need shapes their neural architecture and consequently their everyday emotional lives and vulnerabilities, and significant interpersonal dramas. Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT) provides an integration of experiential and systemic interventions that create corrective emotional experiences. This workshop outlines the theory and practice of EFIT. Participants will learn about core models of health and dysfunction from an attachment perspective, including how growth and adaptation can be blocked. By focusing on the primacy of emotion and how to create a safe haven and secure base alliance, participants will learn how to stay with present processes in session to shape key change events. Dr Johnson will accompany her lecture and discussion with recorded EFIT sessions and experiential exercises. Objectives - Participants will be able to describe: how to grasp the laws of attachment that structure the development of personality and their sig- nificance for clinical intervention how to tune into and shape internal cycles of affect regulation habitual ways of dancing with others that relate to presenting problems and emotional disorders how to identify the core components of emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety how to implement the basics of the EFT Tango and other interventions how to adapt EFIT for different presenting symptoms Sue Johnson, Ed.D., is the lead developer of EFT. She is director of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT), Distinguished Research Professor at Alliant University (San Diego) and Professor Emeritus of Clinical Psychology (Ottawa). Her numerous honors include the Outstanding Contribution to the Field Award from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Her best-known professional books include: The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy, Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy with Trauma Survivors, and her most recent book for therapists, Attachment in Practice: EFT with Individuals, Couples and Families. Witherspoon2 1Private Practice, Oakland, CA 2Alliant International University While a signiﬁcant minority of people practice some form of consensual nonmonogamy (CNM) in their relationships, there is very little published research on how to work competently and effectively with those who identify as polyamorous or who have open relationships. It is easy to let one’s cultural assumptions override one’s work in practice. However, cultural competence is an ethical cornerstone of psychotherapeutic work, as is using evidence-based treatment in the services we provide to our clients. This case presents the work of a clinician using both evidence-based practice and practice- based evidence in helping a nonmonogamous couple repair a breach in their relationship. We present a composite case representing a common presenting issue in the ﬁrst author’s psychotherapy practice, which is oriented toward those engaging in or identifying with alternative sexual practices.
