When Sweden invaded Poland, in June 1655, it went to war with an army which reflected not only the state’s military and cultural strengths but also its fiscal weaknesses. During 1655 the Swedes won great successes in Poland and captured most of the country. But a series of military decisions transformed the Swedish army from a concentrated, combined-arms force into a mobile but widely dispersed force.

  • William Brass 1921–1999
WILLIAM BRASS Copyright © The British Academy 2001 – all rights reserved William Brass 1921–1999 PROFESSOR WILLIAM BRASS, who died on 11 November 1999, was a demographer, statistician, and mathematician of great distinction. He made important contributions to knowledge in many fields, but is best known for his development of a body of analytical techniques for the esti- mation of fertility and mortality rates in countries lacking comprehensive systems of birth and death registration, and where data collected in censuses and surveys are liable to be severely biased by response errors. Such was the importance of his contribution to this field that the tech- niques were often described as ‘Brass methods’. They have also been labelled ‘indirect’, because many of them derive indices from questions and data only obliquely related to the desired measure. A good example, which will be further discussed below, is the estimation of life table prob- abilities of survival for adults from questions on whether persons’ fathers and mothers are still alive, generally called the ‘orphanhood’ method. This memoir will attempt to outline Bill Brass’s principal contributions to this field; the review will be very far from exhaustive and no attempt is made to describe his contributions in other areas of demography and statistics1. But the importance of his work is reflected in the fact that the figures, published regularly by the United Nations and other bodies, of the numbers of people living on this planet have been compiled largely with the help of the methods which he devised. 1 A complete bibliography of his published works may be obtained from the Centre for Popula- tion Studies, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, 49–51 Bedford Square, London WC1B 3DP.

  • Important Rider Info!!! Dear Participants, the Preparations for Our 44Th
Important rider info!!! Dear participants, the preparations for our 44th Uelsen ADAC cross-country ride 2021 are in full swing. The route and special stages are ready. Many hard-working hands are trying to put on a great event for you. The paddock will again be on the company grounds of van der Most in Itterbeck on Kirchweg. Admission here is only for riders and a chaperone, (children under 13 do not count). All participants have to hand in the completed and signed Covid self-disclosure form (see attachment or "notice board") at the gate, as well as prove that they have been vaccinated and that the 14-day period has been observed, that they are recovering, or submit an up-to-date (official) negative test from a test centre. After meeting these requirements you will receive an event wristband and for service vehicles a pass. In addition, it is necessary that you log in via the QR code attached to the gate or at the paper collection. QR codes are also available for the individual exams and ZK1. We would ask you to register on Friday when you leave the exams (registration/deregistration). This information must also be passed on to your supervisors. We are not allowed to exceed the number of 500 persons. However, as usually not everyone is in the paddock, we can prove this by registering at the individual locations. With your support, you make our work easier and we can allow attendants at the event. Spectators are not allowed in the paddock! We hope that we will not be slowed down in our preparations due to Corona and that all riders will be able to arrive without any problems.

  • African Population History: Contributions of Moral Demography
The Journal of African History (2021), 62(2), 183–200 doi:10.1017/S002185372100044X FORUM CONTRIBUTION African Population History: Contributions of Moral Demography Sarah Walters* London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine *Corresponding author. E-mail: [email protected] (Received 6 April 2021; revised 2 July 2021; accepted 2 July 2021) Abstract Improving knowledge about African historical demography is essential to addressing current population trends and achieving deeper understanding of social, economic, and political change in the past and present. I use census and parish register data from Tanganyika to address the origins of twentieth-century population growth, to describe how major changes in fertility and child mortality began in the 1940s, and to emphasise the significance of the large rise in fertility between the 1940s and 1970s. Through this work and my wider survey of parish registers in Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia, I consider the relation- ships between power, evidence, and meaning in these data sources. Alongside the macro gaps in Africa’s population history are significant microsilences — lacunae in the sources and data which reflect the hegemonic structures within which they were produced. I suggest a moral demography approach to their analysis, borrowing from the reflexive and dialectic method found in studies of moral economy. Keywords: Africa; Tanzania; demography; quantitative sources; reproduction; family; fertility The population of Africa is projected to grow tenfold between 1960 and 2050,
