Ⅲ. Course Description and Objectives

This course will provide an overview of linguistic structure and discuss the relevant analyses of a certain structure. Based on the readings of the text, we will discuss the adequacy of the analyses including the generalizations and consider expanded sets of data. This course touches on the general areas of linguistics, from linguistic background, genetic affiliation, historical development, dialect, lexicon, , sound pattern, , , language and gender, language society, to . The caviar of this course is to compare English with Korean, Japanese and Chinese from many linguistic perspectives. For each week, everyone is required to complete the assigned readings specified in the syllabus and is encouraged to read the related literature if possible. Each of you is strongly recommended to further investigate the issues before the class meetings and reach your own conclusions concerning the adequacy of the analyses presented in the books.
