PETERSCHMITT

76. PETERSCHMITT

Jacob Peterschmitt, my g.g.g.g.grandfather died in , Upper in 1828. Through various records we have estimated his birthyear to be about 1767. A few years after Jacob’s death, his widow, Marie (Ernst) Peterschmitt, with three of her daughters and one step-daughter, emigrated to Canada. The name Peterschmitt, in its various forms is found in the old records in Europe, and some of the immigrants in the United States went by this surname, but it does not appear in the Canadian records, because the name was shortened to Schmidt. And because of this, the Peterschmitt family was not researched by me until recently.

ORIGINS

Rüdi Peter (Peterschmitt) and Verena Äschbacher (1-a – see Notes below) were married at Gonten- schwil, Switzerland on March 13, 1711. Gontenschwil is a municipality in the district of Kulm, in the area west of Lake Hallwilersee in Canton Aargau. They appear to be the forebears of an extended Peterschmitt family in the Amish Mennonite congregations in Germany and .

Unfortunately, we have not been able to connect View of Gontenschwil, Switzerland our Jacob Peterschmitt into this family. Credit: www.gontenschwil.ch (backslash)

Two known children of Rüdi Peter (Peterschmitt) and Verena Äschbacher have been found: A. Jacob Peterschmitt was baptized at Gontenschwil March 13, 1711, and died after 1769. He married Catharina Riss/Reiss/Röss. She was born at Triberg in the Schwarzwald of Baden, and died at , Upper Alsace Feb. 2, 1764. B. Sébastian/Bastian Peterschmitt was baptized at Gontenschwil Sept. 16, 1714, and died at Horbourg- Wihr, Upper Alsace (on the east side of ) circa 1752. He married Anna Augspurger/Augsburger. Before 1744 they came from to occupy the lower mill at the bottom of the valley of at Ste. Croix-en-Plaine in Upper Alsace.

An extended chart of these two families can be found at the end of this PETERSCHMITT Introduction.

Rudi and Verena left Switzerland shortly after the birth of their second child. They are found in:  1715 – in Denzlingen, Baden, Germany  1725 – 62 km to the north on the Spitalhof estate at Offenburg, Baden (adjacent to and below Kehl);  1745-1747 – 58 km to the southwest at Baldenheim, Lower Alsace, France  1748-1752 – 21 km to the southwest at , Upper Alsace (adjacent to )

- 1 - PETERSCHMITT

The Peterschmitt surname itself still has some puzzles attached. Both the surname Peter and the common surname Schmidt can be found among the Anabaptists in the Lake Thun area of Canton Bern in Switzerland in the end of the 1600’s. Were these two surnames paired at a certain time, or does the surname Peterschmitt have its own specific origin? Historian Joseph Peter Staker says the names were paired: the signature Rudolf Peter schmiden, found on leases in 1725 and 1745, was the father’s name with his profession (blacksmith). In German this became Peterschmidt or Petter Schmid.

By the early 1700’s the name Peterschmitt began to appear among the Swiss Anabaptist emigrants in Upper A Sample of how the surname was written in America. The 1849 letter from Jacob Steinman was Alsace. But the name has many spellings, and often is addressed to Johannes P. Schmitt written as two words in the French civil records, appearing as: Petter Schmidt, Peter Schmitt, Pierre Schmitt. Over time this has evolved in France into 'Peterschmitt.' In the United States and Canada it was accepted as Schmidt or Smith, and sometimes with a middle initial 'P.' as in ‘P. Schmidt’. It has also taken the forms 'Peterschmidt' and 'Petersmith.'

Two Peterschmitt families settled in, or passed through, the Amish Mennonite community in Upper Canada. This PETERSCHMITT Family Genealogical Introduction will be divided in the following sections: 1. The Jacob Peterschmitt Family 2. The Madeleine Peterschmidt and Joseph Schegel Family 3. Other Peterschmitts

THE JACOB PETERSCHMITT FAMILY

Lorraine Roth has researched all the genealogies of the families who were in the Amish Mennonite congregations of Ontario (early name was Upper Canada) in the 1800’s. She found a ‘Maria Ernst’ in the records of the Wilmot Amish Mennonite community. ‘Maria Ernst’, with the year of birth as 1779 and date of death as May 28, 1839, was listed in the Notiz Buch von Nicolaus Lichti in Wilmot O[ber]: Canada 1839. Nicholas Lichti lived on Erb's Road, just west of what would become the village of St. Agatha, Ontario. Today St. Agatha Mennonite Church and cemetery are situated on a front corner of the former Nicholas Lichti farm.

The June 15, 1839 issue of Canada Museum (newspaper) announced the death of Widow Maria Schmith on May 28, 1939 in her 60th year. Minister Rudolph Roth and Bishop Johannes Oesch of the Wilmot congregation conducted the funeral. These two Marias who died on the same day must be the same person, with Nicholas Lichti using her maiden name Ernst as was the custom in France, whereas the newspaper used her married name, Schmidt.

Just eight days before her death, Peter Litwiller (later a minister and bishop in the Wilmot congregation) had settled with Maria Ernst – according to his Notizbuch. One would suppose that she had worked at some time for the Litwillers, and there was some remuneration due her, and it was high time she received it!

Through further research, Lorraine Roth eventually found that Maria Ernst was actually the mother-in-law of Nicholas Lichti (1-b) (see Notes below). Nicholas was married to Maria’s daughter Anna Ernst, who had been born out of wedlock to Maria in 1806. In 1811 mother Maria married Jacob Peterschmitt, a widower with children. Joe Springer, curator of the Mennonite Historical Library, Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana, found the marriage record of Maria Ernst to Jacob Peterschmitt at Ueberstrass, Upper Alsace, France. Helmut Gingerich

- 2 - PETERSCHMITT from Bavaria provided a copy of the marriage certificate with a partial translation in 2017. Many more civil records were found in Ueberstrass of the children of Jacob Peterschmitt and Maria Ernst, and from him and his previous wife Katharina Schad/Schott. In these records the surname was ‘Peterschmitt’ or ‘Peter Schmitt’. Therefore, we understood that these women, Marie Ernst Peterschmitt herself and her daughters and step- daughter, who were named Schmidt in the Canadian records, were indeed born Peterschmitt.

After I discovered that I am part of the Peterschmitt family, I wanted to learn all I could about this family and its ancestry. Helmut Gingerich from Bavaria found civil records at Ueberstrass of this family including Jacob’s death, and Katherina Schott’s death, but probably the most interesting find was a death record that showed Marie Ernst was Jacob Peterschmitt’s third wife, not second wife as we had believed. When Helmut found death records of two more of Jacob’s children, which listed the mother of the children as Elisabeth Krehbiel, we understood that Jacob Peterschmitt’s first wife was named Elisabeth Krehbiel, his second wife was Katharina Schott, and his third wife was Maria Ernst.

We had hoped to find a civil record that gives the names of Jacob Peterschmitt’s parents, but so far we have not been successful. Jacob’s marriage record to Marie Ernst describes him as the widower of Katharina Schott, rather than the son of so and so.

We searched the Ueberstrass civil records to see if Jacob Peterschmitt is mentioned in any other record. A death record was found, in which Jacob Peter Schmid is a witness. Following is a translation of a shortened version:

Death of Martin Kistler, August 29, 1803, of Ueberstrass

Deceased is Martin ?Kistler?, born in/at Ober ?...? ... (perhaps: Oberbargen aus dem Breisgau). Martin Kistler was a weaver by trade and died in the dwelling of Jacob Peter Schmid,

Witnesses: Jacob Peter Schmid , aged 36? years and Heinrich Erhart, aged 50 years.

In the past, I probably read the name Peterschmitt as I pursued my interest in family history, but since I was unaware of my connection to this family, it did not mean much to me. In reference books on my bookshelf, I would see the name Peterschmitt occasionally, but usually as unconnected individuals. Though I often refer to Joseph Peter Staker’s genealogies in Amish Mennonites of Tazewell County, Illinois, I did not even look up his chapter on the Petersmith family until the other week when I realized that Peterschmitt is the name of one of my ancestors. Following my discovery I read this chapter very carefully and even found a Jacob Petter Schmid with the same estimated birth year as my Jacob Peterschmitt (ca.1767), but they are two different individuals. The Jacob Petter Schmid which Staker found is a descendant of Rüdi Peter (Peterschmitt) and Verena Äschbacher of Gontenschwil, Switzerland. Staker also reports that Neil Ann Stucky Levine has an excellent article European Folk Remedies, from the Notebook of Jacob Peterschmidt (1766-1831), which can be found in the January 2008 issue of Mennonite Family History.

By using the available civil records and the work of other researchers (mainly Lorraine Roth), the following family list for Jacob Peterschmitt has been compiled. Hopefully future researchers will discover whether our Jacob Peterschmitt is connected to the Petersmith family which Joseph Staker researched. Credit: cartesfrance.fr

A scan of the signature portion of the ► marriage record of Jacob Peterschmitt to Maria (Anne) Ernst in 1811 from the Civil Registers of Ueberstrass, Upper Alsace, France.

The bride Anne Ernst obviously could not write and just put her "x" mark. Maybe Jacob Peterschmitt was also written not from his own hand, but with the "x" following.

Following is a translation into English of a portion of the French record of marriage. (Questions marks indicate words that were difficult to decipher.) Unfortunately, the clerk described Jacob Peterschmitt as the widower of Catherine Schad, without naming his parents.

MADELEINE PETERSCHMIDT AND JOSEPH SCHLEGEL SR. FAMILY:

THEIR BRIEF SOJOURN IN UPPER CANADA

Madeleine Peterschmidt (also known as Magdalena or Malinda), was the daughter of Joseph Peterschmidt and Madeleine Becher. (Joseph Peterschmidt is the son of Sebastian Peterschmitt and Barbe (Ruth) Schlatter.) In 1830, she was married in the little village of Ste. Croix-en-Plaine, Alsace to Joseph Schlegel, brother to Nicolaus, who settled in Canada. Although this family was in Canada only briefly, we will give some of their history because their children also had connections with Canadian families. At the time of the 1836 census, the Joseph Schlegel family was living on the Reinfelderhof near , between and Colmar in Upper Alsace. At the time of the 1841 census they were at , where their infant son Christian had died in 1840.

When Joseph Schlegel applied for a passport, he indicated there were only two children [Joseph and Anna]. Evidently, daughter Madeleine was already married to John Zimmerman and probably travelled with the Schlegel parents to America. We assume that the youngest son Nicolas had died although we did not find a death record.

Town Hall in Ste. Croix-en-Plaine, Upper Alsace According to family tradition, the Joseph Schlegel

Madeleine Peterschmidt and Joseph Schlegel were married family migrated to Canada in 1854. Since they do in this town in 1830. not appear in the 1861 census, they must have credit: Rauenstein, Creative Commons moved on to Davis County, Iowa, within the next few years. Daughter Madeleine and her husband John Zimmerman had already purchased land there in 1855.

It was probably in Davis County, Iowa that Anna was married to Nicholas F. Roth in January of 1863. Joseph Jr. was married in Davis County in August of 1863 to Mary Miller. Both of these spouses were born to families

- 8 - PETERSCHMITT in Canada. The Miller family had also moved to Davis County. Nicholas Roth, however, was probably seeking adventure – and perhaps a wife.

A Magdalena Schlegel died in 1878 and was buried in Peters Mennonite Cemetery in Indiana. It is believed she was the former Madeleine Peterschmidt. We have not found the date and place of death of Joseph Schlegel Sr. Did Magdalena perhaps accompany her daughter's family to Indiana? Madeleine Zimmerman died in Indiana in 1888.

After their marriage, Joseph Jr. and Mary Schlegel moved to near Wayland, Henry County, Iowa. They became members of the Sugar Creek Amish Mennonite congregation, and in 1867 Joseph was ordained to the ministry. A year later he was ordained bishop. In 1877 or 1878, Joseph went to Seward County, Nebraska, purchased some land near Milford, built a frame house, and then returned to Iowa for his family. From then until his death, Joseph served the growing Fairview Amish Mennonite congregation near Milford as well as the broader Amish Mennonite constituency -- including at least one pastoral visit to Canada.

Anna (registered as Anne Marie, and also known as Hannah) and Nicholas F. Roth had seven children, and only a few weeks after the youngest one, Anna, was born, Mother Anna passed away the day before Christmas in 1874. Nicholas's brother John F. Roth took the train from New Hamburg, Ontario, to attend the funeral and took Baby Anna home with him on the train. That left six children back in Iowa to be cared for by Nicholas and the Joseph Schlegel family.

Nicholas returned to Ontario and married Catharine Kuepfer, the widow of Peter Brenneman, John F. Roth's brother-in-law. He took Catharine back to Iowa, and she bore him another son. In 1882, however, Nicholas F. Roth died. His brother John again made the trip to Iowa, and this time returned with 13-year-old Benedict (also known as Benjamin). Nicholas and Anna's son Joseph had died in the meantime, leaving three older girls, ages 18 and 16 (two were twins). The Joseph Schlegel family took them under their wings. Widow Catherine returned to Canada with her son Nicholas.

[2] AN EXTENDED PETERSCHMITT FAMILY

The first part [A] of this Peterschmitt family is the well-researched work of Joseph Peter Staker, whose on-line publication is entitled, Amish Mennonites of Tazewell County, Illinois. This extended family chart has been compiled by Bruce W.
