# Bibliography and some more information # Further readings and some more information The data from this document were archived at the Institute for Contemporary Art in Zagreb collection, as part of the Research project conceived in 1997 by a SCCAN – Soros Centers for Contemporary Art Network, funded by the Open Society Foundation, New York. The purpose of the project was to select, collect and disseminate texts on contemporary art practices in the Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia, around Soros Centers for Contemporary Art, written in and about art of the 1990s. The coordination of the project was carried out by Janka Vukmir, SCCA – Zagreb, today the Institute for Contemporary Art, Zagreb. We did not intervene in the data more than just correcting obvious typos and spelling. On the occasion of collecting bibliography, we were given permission from our colleagues, to rightfully use them. If anyone now has different instructions, please, contact us at the [email protected]. All of the texts accompanying this document and published on the website www.institute.hr have been later published on the website of the I_CAN, International Contemporary Art Network, the short-lived successor of the SCCAN. Bibliography is published for the first time. On the occasion of the exhibition 90s: Scars, revisiting the art practices and social and political context of the 1990s in the postcommunist countries, the Institute for Contemporary Art is now reoffering a collection of 89 texts and a comprehensive list of then proposed further readings, on the website of the Institute for Contemporary Art, www.institute.hr. The exhibition 90s: Scars is curated by Janka Vukmir and organized by the Institute for Contemporary Art and the MMSU – Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rijeka, on the occasion of the European Cultural Capital Rijeka 2020. -

PPeettteerrrssbbuurrrgg The Small Throne Room in Hermitage opened after restoration On 9 of December 2015, during the 'Days of the Hermitage' - its 251 years anniversary - took place the ceremony of opening the Peter the Great (Small Throne) Room after the restoration. Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, General Director of the State Hermitage, Svetlana Borisovna Adaksin, Deputy General Director and Chief Curator of the State Hermitage, Tatyana Alexandrovna Baranova, head of the Department for Scientific Restoration and Conservation, staff of the Department for Scientific Restoration and Conservation and Guillaume Verzier, owner of the Prelle factory participated in the ceremony. In his introduction Mikhail Borisovich said: “We are very pleased to be friends with the firm Prelle, which like the Hermitage as a symbol of historical continuity. We welcome Monsieur Guillaume Verzier, who has brought priceless materials kept in the Prelle company archives. We thank everyone who made this remarkable opening possible! Above all, the golden hands of our restorers!” In turn, Guillaume Verzier thanked the Director and staff of the museum for the opportunity to become involved in the restoration of the Small Throne Room. “It is a great honor for the Prelle factory to reproduce the velvet just as it was made 150 years ago,” he said, “in the very same conditions, in the very same workshops that were used in 1856.” It is precisely the fabric finish of the Peter the Great Hall which stands out for its exceptional sumptuousness and attracts particular attention: around the whole room – on the walls lined with red Lyons velvet, in the gilded décor of the frieze, in the painting on the vaults – are Russian coats-of-arms, crowns and wreathes of glory. -

[CONCEPT, Vol. XXXVI (2013)] Warrior, Hero, Mentor: The Influence of Prince Peter Bagration on the Fictional Protagonists of War and Peace Kenneth Mumma Liberal Studies According to historian Alexander Mikaberidze, though Prince General Peter Bagration was one of the Russian army’s most prominent commanders and an important historical and military figure at the beginning of the 19th century, he has been virtually overlooked by historians, both in Russia and the West, with very little scholarly biographical work in existence.1 Similarly Leo Tolstoy in his epic, War and Peace, calls Prince Bagration “the hero of heroes,”2 while spending little time developing his character, especially when compared to other significant historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Prince General Mikhail Kutuzov. Why the discrepancy between Bagration’s significance as a person – as a military leader – and the apparent inattention given to him by scholars as well as Tolstoy? For answers to this question with regard to the scholarly historical treatment of Bagration, we look to historians such as Mikaberidze. On the other hand, when we begin to address the question of Tolstoy’s treatment of Prince Peter, we encounter one of the cruxes of War and Peace, which is how to understand the roles of the novel’s historical figures, particularly in relation to its fictional characters. Inasmuch as War and Peace is a work of historical fiction, Tolstoy has not simply painted a fictional narrative on the canvas of history. Rather he has spun the threads of the lives of historical figures, imagined characters, fictitious circumstances and historical details and events into a fabric that blurs the distinctions between fact and fiction, and which is more important. -

GRU is the English transliteration of the Russian acronym ГРУ , which stands for "Главное Разведывательное Управление", meaning Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff. The full name is GRU GSh (GRU Generalnovo Shtaba (or "GenShtaba"), i.e. "GRU of the General Staff"). The GRU is Russia's largest intelligence agency. It deploys six times as many agents in foreign countries as the SVR which is the KGB intelligence successor. It also commanded 25,000 spetsnaz troops in 1997. [1] The current GRU Director is General of the Army Valentin Vladimirovich Korabelnikov. History The GRU was created in 1918 by the Bolshevik Communist Party under Lenin, and given the task of handling all military intelligence, particularly the collection of intelligence of military or political significance from sources outside the Soviet Union. The GRU operated residencies all over the world, along with the SIGINT (signals intelligence) station in Lourdes, Cuba, and throughout the former Soviet bloc countries, especially in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. The first head of the GRU was Janis Karlovich Berzin, a Latvian Communist and former member of the Cheka, who remained in the post until 28 November 1937, when he was arrested and subsequently liquidated during Stalin's purges. -

Romanov News Новости Романовых By Paul Kulikovsky №86 May 2015 Celebrations of the birthday of Emperor Nicholas II Emperor Nicholas II was born 18 May (Old style 6 May) 1868, as the eldest son of the Tsarevich Alexander Alexandrovich, later Emperor Alexander III the Peacemaker, and his wife Maria Feodorovna. He was the last Emperor of Russia, Grand Duke of Finland, and titular King of Poland. His official short title was Tsar Nicholas II, Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias. In 1981 he was canonized as a martyr by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia. This led to the canonization of Nicholas II, his wife Empress Alexandra and their children as passion bearers - a title commemorating believers who face death in a Christ-like manner - on 15 August 2000 by the Russian Orthodox Church. About Emperor Nicholas II.... "In order to understand Emperor Nicholas II, you have to be Orthodox. It is no good being secular or nominally Orthodox, semi-Orthodox, ‘hobby Orthodox’ and retaining your unconverted cultural baggage, whether Soviet or Western – which is essentially the same thing. You have to be consistently Orthodox, consciously Orthodox, Orthodox in your essence, culture and world view. In other words, you have to have spiritual integrity – exactly as the Emperor had, in order to understand him. Emperor Nicholas was profoundly and systematically Orthodox in his spiritual, moral, political, economic and social outlook. His Orthodox soul looked out on the world through Orthodox eyes and acted in an Orthodox way, with Orthodox reflexes. So we too have to be Orthodox in order to understand him. -
