Sustained efforts of local people, policy makers and philanthropists who envisioned the extension and qualitative amelioration of higher education among the prospective students of this village and surrounding areas that had been otherwise left out from the circle of elitist urban centric development, led to the establishment of this college. Polba Mahavidyalaya is located in a serene picturesque rural environment where peace reigns and transcendent academic atmosphere pervades the entire teaching-learning process. A Continuous process of academic & infrastructural development is an inseparable part of the college. According to latest Census of India Report, the total population of Polba-Dadpur Block has been 263,555 of which 35.79% belongs to SC & 11.47% belongs to ST Communities (District Statistical Hand Book, Hooghly, 2015, Bureau of Applied Economics &Satistics, Government of West Bengal).Polba Mahavidyalaya is the only General Degree College in Polba- Dadpur Block. Recognition Polba Mahavidyalaya is recognized by the University Grants Commission under Sections 2(f) & 12(B) of UGC Act, 1956 since 2010 vide Letter no. 8-276/2009 (CPP-I/C)dated14.06.2010. NAAC ACCREDITATION Polba Mahavidyalaya is accredited (B) with CGPA 2.44 by National Assessment & Accreditation Council, Bengaluru in 2016 vide Letter no. F.19.26/EC(SC-20)/DO/2016/8.1 dated 16th December 2016 . Vision To develop human potential by providing quality education intermingled with value to our rural students in general and to our students belonging to Scheduled tribes, Scheduled castes, Minority Communities and other Backward Categories in particular. General (Three Year Degree Course) GROUP CORE COURSE ‘A’ Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics ‘B’ Chemistry, Botany and Zoology OUTLINE OF THE SEMESTER WISE COURSE STRUCTURES OF B.A./ B.SC. UNDER THE CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS) Under the CBCS there are broadly two Course structures – i) Honours Course and ii) General Course. The main components of the Course are as follows: 1. Core Course:A Course that should compulsorily be studied by a candidate as a core requirement is termed as a core Course. 2. Elective Course :Generally a Course, which can be chosen from a pool of Courses and which may be very specific or specialized or advanced or supportive to the discipline / subject of study or which provides an extended scope or which enables an exposure to some other discipline/ subject/ domain or nurtures the candidate’s proficiency/ skill, is called an Elective Course. 2.1 Discipline Specific Elective (DSE) Course :A Course, which may be offered by the main discipline/ subject of study , is referred to as Discipline Specific Elective Course. 2.2 Generic Elective (GE) Course :An Elective Course, chosen generally from an unrelated discipline/ subject of study with an intention to seek an exposure, is called a Generic Course. N.B. –A Core Course, offered in a discipline / subject, may be treated as an Elective by other discipline/subject and vice-versa and such Electives may also be referred to as Generic Elective. 2.3 Dissertation / Project:An Elective Course, designed to acquire special/advanced knowledge, is termed as Dissertation/ Project. This is considered as a special Course involving application of knowledge in solving/analysing/ exploring a real life situation/ difficult problem. A Dissertation / Project work will be of 6 credits. A Dissertation/ Project work may be given in lieu of a Discipline Specific Elective. 3. Ability Enhancement Course (AEC) :The Ability Enhancement(AE) Courses are of two kinds- Ability Enhancement Compulsory Courses(AECC) and Skill Enhancement Courses(SEC). 3.1 AECC :These are the Courses based on the contents that lead to knowledge enhancement and consist of Environmental Studies & English/ MIL Communication. These are mandatory for all disciplines. 3.2 SEC :SEC are value- based and / or skill – based and are aimed at providing hand-on-training, competence,skill etc. It will be minimum 2 for Honours Courses and 4 for General Courses. These may be chosen from a pool of Courses designed to provide value- based and/ or skill- based knowledge and would contain both theory and lab. / hands-on-training/field work. The main purpose of these Courses is to provide the students life-skill in hands-on-mode so as to increase their employability. Varanasi (Corresponding author's email: [email protected]) Abstract Nowadays Self-Help Group or SHG plays a vital role not only in social transformation and upliftment of rural women but also in social-economic betterment of them. The main objective of this paper is to examine the impact assessment in the socio-economic status of rural women through Self Help Groups with the help of a micro-level study of two C. D. blocks namely Dhaniakhali and Polba-Dadpur in Hooghly district. 40572 SHGs are consisting of 394897 members in 18 C. D. blocks of Hooghly district. Among the blocks, Daniakhali and Polba-Dadpur were selected for the study, of which 28 groups are chosen randomly. From these selected groups 108 members have been selected to conduct the primary survey. Personal interviews were conducted to find out the major purposes of the study i.e. to examine the role of SHG in developing the socio-economic status of rural women and to analyse the impact of SHGs in decision making. The study is mainly based on primary data and simple per cent calculation is used for analysing the data.
