CLASSROOM PRIMARY TEACHER PREPARATORY SCHOOL PERMANENT FULL-TIME COMMENCING JANUARY 2021

Newington College is a boys' school associated with the Uniting Church, founded in 1863 and a member of the GPS Association of NSW. There are approximately 2040 boys across three campuses, with 1350 boys at the Secondary campus, including 50 boarders. At the Secondary level, the College offers both the NSW HSC and IB Diploma pathways at Year 12. The remaining boys attend the Preparatory Schools at either Wyvern House (Stanmore) or Lindfield on ’s Upper North-Shore. Newington College also operates an Early Learning Centre which provides for the educational needs of 60 three and four-year-old boys and girls.

A. OUTLINE

The College is seeking to appoint a full-time permanent (1.0 FTE) Primary Classroom Teacher to commence at Wyvern House Preparatory School in Stanmore at the start of the Term 1, 2021. (20 January) • We seek an outstanding classroom teacher who is committed to high standards • An ability and willingness to contribute to the pastoral care and co-curricular program will be required • Experience teaching the upper primary years is desirable • All staff must be supportive of the Uniting Church ethos of the College.

B. DUTY STATEMENT FOR TEACHING STAFF

The Role of the Classroom Teacher

Classroom teachers at Newington College are expected to be flexible, enthusiastic, competent and dynamic team members, who actively engage in the daily life of the school, in addition to their specific responsibilities at class level. Their role will include:

• providing educational leadership; • creating a flexible program and classroom environment favourable to boys’ learning and their personal growth; • establishing an effective rapport with students; • motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation, in accordance with each student’s ability; and • establishing positive relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Current specific responsibilities are listed below.

Teaching and Learning Teachers:

• plan, prepare and deliver engaging, challenging and dynamic lessons at all times; • ensure students make very good progress in all lessons by ensuring that rigorous monitoring, appropriate assessment and quality feedback occurs; • provide timely and useful feedback to parents by conducting regular parent teacher consultations as well as by writing high quality reports; • in lessons, implement our whole school strategies such as Big Write, THRASS, the Learning Power framework, Information Technology approach and the Gifted and Talented policy; • contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and review of the and associated policies and programs; • promote and maintain awareness of current educational developments, disseminate curriculum information and facilitate the incorporation of new ideas, as appropriate; • are familiar with NESA /National Curriculum and school curriculum documents, appropriate to their year level.

Classroom Management Teachers:

• guide the general development and meet the individual needs of all boys. This includes attention to physical and emotional health and social relationships, and the development of desirable habits and attitudes; • manage a well-rounded educational program, directing groups in their classes, assisting boys individually and supervising extra-curricular activities; • advise or correct boys when necessary in the classroom or on the school premises, and shall keep the Head informed concerning student behaviour management issues; • plan all excursions with the relevant Deputy Head of the Prep School. This includes completing the appropriate Risk Management Forms, provision for transportation, adult supervision, parent consent forms, time schedule, first aid kits, checking rolls on the day of the excursion, etc.; • are responsible for the physical environment of the classroom spaces. This involves attention to display, neatness and all resources; • perform duties associated with student reports and records, attendance reports, etc. • prepare a comprehensive and detailed program including a day book, which shall be available for relief teachers; • immediately report all accidents of students or self, on forms supplied by the school; • are required to attend and to participate actively in the outdoor education program, including overnight camps, with their students. • are encouraged to participate in Parents’ and Friends’ activities; • report for duty on each regular school day in good time to prepare classes for that day and/or to complete before school duty routines.

Student Behaviour Management Teachers:

• contribute towards the positive tone of the school and promote the self-esteem of boys; • contribute to the development of policies and procedures to promote the positive behaviour of boys in the school context (duty of care); • contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures to address and enhance the welfare of boys; • provide appropriate advice about the welfare and behaviour of boys in their designated area of responsibility; • contribute to the monitoring of the boys’ achievements and welfare, including those with special needs; • assist with positive behaviour management and standards throughout the school; • support the school’s Pastoral Care Policy; and • are proactive in expecting appropriate dress standards from boys.

Staff Engagement Teachers:

• provide advice and support to staff about professional and work-related matters; • foster an effective team approach within the staff community; • assist in new staff orientation/assimilation, together with other staff members; and discuss professional development requirements and provisions with other staff members; • actively participate in one of Wyvern’s Professional Learning Communities; • attend and actively contribute to all staff meeting and Professional Development days;

C. THE EDUCATIONAL STRATEGIC PLAN AND AIMS OF THE COLLEGE

The Educational Strategic Plan for 2020-2024 and annual reports, report to parents on our initiatives to date, and the Aims of the College are to be found on the College website. It is a condition of employment that staff comply with all the policies and practices of the College and that conduct is consistent with the Christian ethos of the College. All staff must be fully supportive of the aims of the College.

D. CHILD PROTECTION AND FIRST AID

The successful applicant will be subject to employment screening processes with the Office of the Children’s Guardian and will be required to provide a current Working with Children registration number. In addition, teaching staff will be expected to possess a current First Aid qualification.

F. SELECTION CRITERIA

We have deliberately not provided set and narrow selection criteria. However, it would be expected that the successful candidate will:

• be a dynamic, innovative and successful classroom practitioner • have an excellent understanding of the learning needs of primary aged boys • engage boys in a vibrant Prep School education program at all levels • utilise appropriate technologies to enhance student learning • have appropriate teaching and tertiary qualifications • work effectively as a member of an enthusiastic team • show genuine care for students and a strong commitment to proving a safe and supportive learning environment • enthusiastically participate in the school’s co-curricular program • have experience teaching the upper primary years (desirable but not essential)

G. REMUNERATION

The remuneration for this position will be set in accordance with the Independent Schools NSW/ACT Standards Model (Teachers) Multi-Enterprise Agreement (2017).
