Women provide legitimacy to the political projects of the nation in particular social and historical contexts. This article focuses on the gendered symbolization of the nation through the rhetoric of the 'motherland' and the manipulation of this rhetoric in the context of national struggle in Bangladesh. I show the ways in which the visual representation of this 'motherland' as fertile countryside, and its idealization primarily through rural landscapes has enabled a crystallization of essentialist gender roles for women. This article is particularly interested in how these images had to be reconciled with the subjectivities of women raped during the Bangladesh Liberation War (Muktijuddho) and the role of the aestheticizing sensibilities of Bangladesh's middle class in that process. • Dreaming of a Golden Bengal: Discontinuities of Place and Identity in South Asia
Asian Studies Review September 2011, Vol. 35, pp. 373–395 Dreaming of a Golden Bengal: Discontinuities of Place and Identity in South Asia REECE JONES* University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Abstract: This article analyses five different representations of the homeland category ‘‘Bengal’’. The region of Bengal was partitioned twice in the twentieth century and imagined in a multitude of forms at different historical moments. The article describes the conditions that allowed different territories and peoples to crystallise as ‘‘Bengal’’ and ‘‘the Bengalis’’, and investigates why some versions of the Bengali homeland proved durable as others faded away. Rather than asking who is the real Bengali and where is the real Bengal, it investigates how particular identity categories become popularly practised and why particular images of the homeland come to be perceived as true, legitimate and authentic. It concludes that homeland categories are never fixed and finalised, but are rather always in a process of becoming, and are contested, reimagined and redefined as socio-political contexts change. • Religious Strain in Tagore's Works
RELIGIOUS STRAIN IN TAGORE’S WORKS: AN OVERVIEW DR. J. MADHAVI Assistant professor in English Nizam College, Osmania University. Hydrabad (TEL) INDIA This paper explores the real theme of Tagore’s works as the spiritual enhancement of a person irrespective of his religion and age. Tagore borrows themes from Indian mythology, Buddhism or any other classical sources only to spread the feeling of humanity among the people of all religions. Moreover, his works preach that ones salvation is the ultimate goal that is to be achieved by every human being of any religion. Through his characters he tried to show symbolically that the true wisdom lies in one’s own spirituality. He used poet’s religion which for him is the other name of humanity. In fact, he helped his readers to discover their innate creative spirits and become better religious and better people. In ‘The Post office’ through Amal’s character he defined religion as a spiritual reality that will be reached only after death by everyone who has faith in Almighty. He also vividly explains how Amal’s senses are renewed in a new form that appreciates all things that surround him. His poems voiced against religious and social orthodoxy and took on a lyrical voice of establishing communal harmony among the people. Tagore had reflected on the inner essence of Reality in many of his poems. His beliefs and human values are well expressed in the lyrics of Gitanjali. Finally the ultimate theme of his works represents that true religion is characterized by a healthy relationship with the Divine rather than by external factors.

Poulomi Saha Dickinson College This article argues that tracing Rabindranath Tagore’s travels to Europe and America from 1913 to 1918, which coincide with his public disavowal of nationalism in Bengal, provides an insight into the limitations of nationalism. By offering a contextualization of Tagore’s nationalist disillusionment through a reading of his personal relationships with scholars and artists often taken as the exemplars of literary modernism, the sugges- tion is made that Tagore should be read as a modernist author as well.
