  • FILMS on Palestine-Israel By
PALESTINE-ISRAEL FILMS ON THE HISTORY of the PALESTINE-ISRAEL CONFLICT compiled with brief introduction and commentary by Rosalyn Baxandall A publication of the Palestine-Israel Working Group of Historians Against the War (HAW) December 2014 www.historiansagainstwar.org Licensed under Creative Commons Attribution – NonCommercial – ShareAlike 1 Introduction This compilation of films that relate to the Palestinian-Israeli struggle was made in July 2014. The films are many and the project is ongoing. Why film? Film is often an extraordinarily effective tool. I found that many students in my classes seemed more visually literate than print literate. Whenever I showed a film, they would remember the minute details, characters names and sub-plots. Films were accessible and immediate. Almost the whole class would participate and debates about the film’s meaning were lively. Film showings also improved attendance at teach-ins. At the Truro, Massachusetts, Library in July 2014, the film Voices Across the Divide was shown to the biggest audiences the library has ever had, even though the Wellfleet Library and several churches had refused to allow the film to be shown. Organizing is also important. When a film is controversial, as many in this pamphlet are, a thorough organizing effort including media coverage will augment the turnout for the film. Many Jewish and Palestinian groups list films in their resources. This pamphlet lists them alphabetically, and then by number under themes and categories; the main listings include summaries, to make the films more accessible and easier to use by activist and academic groups. 2 1. 5 Broken Cameras, 2012.

Association of Jewish Libraries REVIEWS September/October 2013 Volume III, No. 3 In The Spotlight Levine, Karen. Hana’s Suitcase: Anniversary Album. (Holocaust Remembrance series). Toronto: Second Story Press, 2012. 174 pp. $24.99. (9781926920368). Ages 9 and up. Hana’s Suitcase received unanimous approval from the Sydney Taylor Book Award Committee in 2002. When the award was presented to Karen Levine at the AJL Conference in Toronto the following year, AJL members had the added privilege of hearing from Hana’s brother George; the event brought tears to most attendee’s eyes. Ten years (and over thirty printings) later, an expanded version of the book has been re-issued. The original text is still here. It includes Hana’s life in Moravia, her fate during the Shoah, her life in Terezin, and her death at the age of thirteen at Auschwitz. Alternating with Hana’s biography, the book tells of her rediscovery by Fumiko Ishioka, director of the Tokyo Holocaust Center and its Children’s Section. The original story ends with the arrival of George Brady, Hana’s brother, and his welcome to the Tokyo museum. Following the 2004 Afterword, the Anniversary Album contains 65 pages of additional material. It includes new statements by Karen Levine, Fumiko Ishioka and George Brady; memories by survivors who knew Hana and George as children; covers of 34 international editions; information about the documentary movie and play based on Hana’s life; and a wealth of photos, stories, and poems by children (primarily in Canada but also in the U.S.) who have been moved by the book.

Available at: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol14/iss2/8 This Article is brought to you for free and open access by DigitalCommons@UNO. It has been accepted for inclusion in Journal of Religion & Film by an authorized editor of DigitalCommons@UNO. For more information, please contact [email protected]. Jews Have the Best Sex: The Hollywood Adventures of a Peculiar Medieval Jewish Text on Sexuality Abstract According to quite a few books and films produced in the last few decades in Europe and North America, sex is widely celebrated in Jewish sources. In “authentic Judaism,” kosher sex between husband and wife is a sacred endeavor and a key to heavenly bliss both on earth and beyond. This representation of Jewish attitudes about sex is highly problematic and is often based on only one medieval Jewish source commonly known as The Holy Letter. This paper discusses the use of this text in two Hollywood films: Yentl (1983), and A Stranger Among Us (1992). This article is available in Journal of Religion & Film: https://digitalcommons.unomaha.edu/jrf/vol14/iss2/8 Marienberg: Jews Have the Best Sex Since the fourteenth century, a Hebrew kabbalistic text on marital sexuality, known as Iggeret ha-Kodesh (may be translated as The Holy Letter or The Epistle on/of Holiness), or Hibur ha-Adam ve-Ishto (The Union of Man and His Wife), has been evoked in various works.

  • Satanstoe; Or, the Littlepage Manuscripts. a Tale of the Colony
SATANSTOE; OR, THE LITTLEPAGE MANUSCRIPTS. A TALE OF THE COLONY. BY J. FENIMORE COOPER. PREFACE. Every chronicle of manners has a certain value. When customs are connected with principles, in their origin, development, or end, such records have a double importance; and it is because we think we see such a connection between the facts and incidents of the Littlepage Manuscripts, and certain important theories of our own time, that we give the former to the world. It is perhaps a fault of your professed historian, to refer too much to philosophical agencies, and too little to those that are humbler. The foundations of great events, are often remotely laid in very capricious and uncalculated passions, motives, or impulses. Chance has usually as much to do with the fortunes of states, as with those of individuals; or, if there be calculations connected with them at all, they are the calculations of a power superior to any that exists in man. We had been led to lay these Manuscripts before the world, partly by considerations of the above nature, and partly on account of the manner in which the two works we have named, "Satanstoe" and the "Chainbearer," relate directly to the great New York question of the day, ANTI-RENTISM; which question will be found to be pretty fully laid bare, in the third and last book of the series. These three works, which contain all the Littlepage Manuscripts, do not form sequels to each other, in the sense of personal histories, or as narratives; while they do in that of principles.

  • Jewish Revenge
ARTICLE Jewish Revenge Haredi Action in the Zionist Sphere Yael Friedman and Yohai Hakak ABSTRACT Jewish ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) cinema in Israel has become increasingly prominent in recent years. Emerging as a highly controversial, secluded, and gender-segregated form of “amateur cinema,” it is currently seeing gradual professionalization. This article discusses Haredi cinema in the context of the Haredi community’s relationship with the Israeli state and the doctrine of Zionism. Appropriating generic conventions of mainstream Hollywood cinema, yet keeping within the secluded Haredi space, this form of minority cinema functions as an alternative (virtual) sphere in which a complex set of negotiations occurs between Jewish ultra-Orthodox ideals and those of the surrounding Israeli society and Zionism. It is reflective of and engaged in the production of recent social and discursive transformations within the Haredi community in Israel. We examine this phenomenon through a focused analysis of the male action genre, specifically the popular series Jewish Revenge (Yehuda Grovais, 2000–2010). As we demonstrate, the mode of representation and the narratives of these films bring models of masculinities and notions of heroism under scrutiny. The Zionist narrative, the national body, and the (imaginary) place of the Haredi within it are being reconfigured through the prism of body politics and fantasies of transgression. In recent years Jewish Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) cinema has come into being. It emerged in the early part of the twenty-first century from the Haredi community in Israel as a particular form of minority cinema. Its corpus includes dozens of 48 | Jewish Film & New Media, Vol.
