    Foresight Research Report: Environment and Resource Sustainability in Museums Document Overview The following research report is designed to provide an overview of key strategic issues relevant to the future of California communities and museums. We hope that this report will be of interest to California museum professionals working to improve service to their community and to plan for the future. From the Spring of 2012 to the Summer of 2013, a team of museum professionals participating in the California Association of Museum’s Leaders of the Future: Museum Professionals Developing Strategic Foresight training project conducted their own secondary (desktop) research on current conditions, trends, and plans for a baseline forecast that postulates the most expected future for museums in the domain of the environment and sustainability. A group of members of the California Association of Museum’s Foresight Committee completed this report. The development and long-term operation of archives in a sustainable manner are critical to accomplish this mission. Applying green or sustainable construction to archival facilities is one way to increase the sustainability of archives. Green construction methods provide various environmental, social and economic benefits to improve the serviceability of a building during its lifetime after the construction is completed at the site. The Building Services Research and Information Association (BSRIA) defines sustainable construction as "the creation and responsible management of a healthy built environment based on resource efficient and ecological principles." Applying green construction to buildings means more than adding a couple of green elements to save on energy bills.

Our goal was to aid the Worcester Art Museum’s efforts to increase their sustainability by assessing energy use at the Worcester Art Museum’s café, and to develop recommendations to increase the energy efficiency and sustainability of the café. Our team interviewed representatives from other museums, restaurants, and dining halls that have implemented green technology to determine best sustainability practices. We also performed an evaluation of the Worcester Art Museum’s café to obtain their baseline efficiency. Once this information was gathered, our team was able to provide the café with specific recommendations to increase their energy efficiency and sustainability. i Denzel Amevor, Alexander Chen, Allison Corriveau, Saraf Rahman Executive Summary The Department of Energy considers energy efficiency to be one of the simplest and most cost effective ways to reduce carbon pollution and therefore fight climate change (energy.gov). Cutting-edge energy efficient technology can help decrease the country’s reliance on fossil fuels as a source of energy. These technologies are designed to promote energy security, or the long-term accessibility of affordable energy, and are a cost-effective way for creating a sustainable energy future.

Abstract: As much as light is a basic requirement in museum design, to appreciate the articles on display, so also are they destructive if not properly controlled or used in display areas! Light have destructive effect on artifacts with various degrees of damage; it also causes discomfort to the eyes of observers who are meant to appreciate the displayed artifacts. Glare is a common phenomenon that brings such discomfort to observers in museums with discoloration of objects thereby making the displayed object not pleasing to the eye. Lighting in museums and art galleries plays a key role in a visitor’s ability to perceive and enjoy the artifacts in total. In order to achieve a successful lighting scheme, the architect or designer must put into consideration the preservation and presentation of these artifacts thereby increasing their life span. The article seeks to highlight some architectural design considerations that will give optimal use of day light in respect to the museum in view. To achieve these, sampling of literature of previous works relating to the topic was referred. Physical observations were also made with respect to the museum in view.     11.–12.04.2013 Berlin International Scientific Workshop Heritage Science and Sustainable Development for the Preservation of Art and Cultural Assets On the Way to the GREEN Museum Conference Booklet SCOPE OF THE WORKSHOP The term "Green Museum" brings together conservation science with the sustainable development for the preservation of art and cultural heritage. This involves three closely related issues: firstly, the preservation and conservation, i.e. the widest possible extension of life expectancy for our cultural heritage; secondly, the economic and infrastructural conditions for it; and finally the ecological energy and resource issue (energy efficiency, carbon footprint). In the sustainability debate, these three aspects can only be considered and evaluated together. The 'Green Museum' is a museum that embraces the concept of sustainability in its program, its activities and its physical presence. Here conservation science programs share a particular responsibility. An important element of sustainable development in the field of museums and monuments is preventive conservation with all its elements, including the various challenges of climate, temperature and humidity, light, pollutants etc. The professional field of conservation and conservation science (Heritage Science*) has developed continuously since the foundation of the Rathgen Research Laboratory on the April 01st, 1888 as the first museum laboratory, especially in recent decades. Conservation research activities have to focus and need to develop modern concepts in interdisciplinary collaborations that are consistent with both the primacy of heritage conservation as well as environmental and financial desiderata. They must integrate all three dimensions of sustainability, ecology, economics and society in order to cope with the immense challenges of the future.

Inwood University of Toronto, Canada Received: August, 2012; Accepted: June, 2013 Abstract This article explores curriculum development in eco-art education, an integration of art education and environmental education, as a means of increasing awareness of and engagement with the environment. It reports on a qualitative research study that tracked teachers’ experiments with the design and implementation of eco-art education in elementary classrooms. Guided by the framework of collaborative action research, a team of educators generated practical and theoretical knowledge to plan, implement, observe and reflect on eco-art curricula and pedagogy. As the first inquiry to examine eco-art education in a sustained way across multiple school sites, it makes a significant contribution to the emerging knowledge and growing discourse of eco-art education by demonstrating how arts-based learning at the elementary level can align with and support environmental education concepts and pedagogy.
