  • Discourses of Merit and Agrarian Morality in Telugu Popular Cinema
Communication, Culture & Critique ISSN 1753-9129 ORIGINAL ARTICLE Looking Back at the Land: Discourses of Agrarian Morality in Telugu Popular Cinema and Information Technology Labor Padma Chirumamilla School of Information, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI 48109, USA This article takes Anand Pandian’s notion of “agrarian civility” as a lens through which we can begin to understand the discourses of morality, merit, and exclusivity that color both popular Telugu film and Telugu IT workers’ understanding of their technologically enabled work. Popular Telugu film binds visual qualities of the landscape and depictions of heroic technological proficiency to protagonists’ internal dispositions and moralities. I examine the portrayal of the landscape and of technology in two Telugu films: Dhee … kotti chudu, and Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana, in order to more clearly discern the nature of this agrarian civility and—more importantly for thinking about Telugu IT workers— to make explicit its attribution of morality to “merit” and to technological proficiency. Keywords: Information Technology, Morality, Telugu Cinema, Merit, Agrarian Civility. doi:10.1111/cccr.12144 InachasesceneinthepopularTelugufilmDhee … kotti chudu, anameless gangster—having just killed off his rival’s family—is fleeing to Bangalore from Hyderabad, driving along roads surrounded by rocky, barren outcrops, and shriveled patches of trees. The rival’s boss confronts him unexpectedly on the deserted road, quickly and seemingly instantaneously surrounding him with his own men and vehicles, before killing him in retaliation. The film then quickly moves on to its main character, a rather comedic scam artist, and its main spaces, in the city of Hyderabad.1 This particular stretch of barren landscape—scene to the violence that underlies a significant revenge plot woven into the film’s story—is not returned to.

  • The Rhetoric of Masculinity and Machismo in the Telugu Film Industry
TAMING OF THE SHREW: THE RHETORIC OF MASCULINITY AND MACHISMO IN THE TELUGU FILM INDUSTRY By Vishnupriya Bhandaram Submitted to Central European University Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisors: Vlad Naumescu Dorit Geva CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2015 Abstract Common phrases around the discussion of the Telugu Film Industry are that it is sexist and male-centric. This thesis expounds upon the making and meaning of masculinity in the Telugu Film Industry. This thesis identifies and examines the various intangible mechanisms, processes and ideologies that legitimise gender inequality in the industry. By extending the framework of the inequality regimes in the workplace (Acker 2006), gendered organisation theory (Williams et. al 2012) to an informal and creative industry, this thesis establishes the cyclical perpetuation (Bourdieu 2001) of a gender order. Specifically, this research identifies the various ideologies (such as caste and tradition), habituated audiences, and portrayals of ideal masculinity as part of a feedback loop that abet, reify and reproduce gender inequality. CEU eTD Collection i Acknowledgements “It is not that there is no difference between men and women; it is how much difference that difference makes, and how we choose to frame it.” Siri Hustvedt, The Summer Without Men At the outset, I would like to thank my friends old and new, who patiently listened to my rants, fulminations and insecurities; and for being agreeable towards the unreasonable demands that I made of them in the weeks running up to the completion of this document.

  • Baahubali –A Milestone of Indian Cinema: Digital Marketing Case Study
Baahubali –A Milestone of Indian Cinema: Digital Marketing Case Study Sakshi Kotecha Namrata A Patil Giri Y. L SandipRakshit Sanjay Ghodawat Institute ([email protected]) ([email protected]) ISBN: 978-1-943295-08-1 ([email protected]) ([email protected]) Baahubali, advertised as the most expensive film that the country has ever produced. That it has clocked in 300crores ($48 million) worldwide in barely nine days at the box office. What’s more interesting, apart from the film itself, is that to achieve this feat without going overboard with aggressive marketing campaigns – yeah, no shoving down of paid-and-planted news down our throats, no nauseatingly incessant promotional tours by the cast on every other channel. What the makers did leverage, however, is the power of social media — not just around the release but also before it even went on floors. The result – Much like the meaning of its title – Baahubali – one with strong arms, the film created an organic hype, riding on its own shoulders. Thus, Baahubali is a great example of the power of digital marketing. For almost more than two years, the question ‘Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?’ became a household topic of conversation and flooded social media with mimes and fan theories. Interestingly, two years before the release of the first part, a digital marketing team worked tirelessly to build its online presence and generate interest around the film since 2013. It went on to create the first Telugu hash tag on Twitter. Today, Baahubali has over 36 lakh likes on the Facebook page, 2.54 lakh followers on Twitter, 4.52 lakh subscribers on YouTube and still increasing day by day.
