Cincinnati Reds Press Clippings February 12, 2019 THIS DAY IN REDS HISTORY 1888-The Reds begin a six-week exhibition tour through Texas, Louisiana and Alabama MLB.COM Duke returns to Reds on one-year deal Cincy designates right-hander Lopez for assignment in corresponding move By Mark Sheldon MLB.com @m_sheldon Feb. 11th, 2019 GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- This past offseason featured multiple trades by the Reds, but Monday officially marked their first free-agent acquisition, when lefty reliever Zach Duke signed a one-year, $2 million contract. To make room for Duke, right-handed pitcher Jose Lopez was designated for assignment. Duke, who will turn 36 in April, agreed to terms with Cincinnati on Feb. 2. The club will get added veteran presence in its bullpen. He is a 14-year Major League veteran. In 72 games combined for the Twins and Mariners last season, Duke was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA and 1.50 WHIP. Over 52 innings, he allowed 57 hits including one home run with 21 walks and 51 strikeouts. Left-handed hitters batted .220 against him, compared to .311 by right-handed hitters. But the Reds do not view the ground-ball pitcher as a one-out left-handed situational reliever. "He's a guy that likes to pitch a full inning and expects to be in there to pitch a full inning," Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams said. "He's had a lot of success against lefties, but we are comfortable that he's not necessarily going to be a one-out guy." Duke is returning to the Reds after pitching for them during the 2013 season, a stint that helped turn his career around after being released by the Nationals earlier that year.

  • Why the 2020 LA Dodgers Are the Greatest Team of All Time
Floersch UWL Journal of Undergraduate Research XXIV (2021) Why the 2020 Dodgers Are the Greatest Team of All Time, at least statistically Sean Floersch Faculty Mentor: Chad Vidden, Mathematics and Statistics ABSTRACT This paper explores the use of sports analytics in an attempt to quantify the strength of Major League Baseball teams from 1920-2020 and then find which team was the greatest team of all time. Through the use of basic baseball statistics, ratios were personally created that demonstrate the strength of a baseball team on offense and defense. To account for slight year to year differences in the ratios, standard deviations to the yearly mean are used and the personally created Flo Strength metric is used with the standard deviations. This allows the ratios to be compared across all seasons, with varying rules, number of teams, and number of games. These ratios and Flo Strength metric go through statistical testing to confirm that the ratios are indeed standardized across seasons. This is especially important when comparing the strange Covid-19 2020 baseball season. After quantifying all the team strengths, it is argued that the 2020 Los Angeles Dodgers are the greatest team of all time. INTRODUCTION The 2020 Covid MLB Season In a year like no other, with a pandemic locking down society, racial inequalities becoming the forefront of the news, and division across the country mounting, sports were turned to for a sense of normalcy. Slowly, sports returned, but in a way never seen before. The NBA returned, isolated in a bubble. Strict protocol was put in place in the NHL and MLS in order to ensure player and personnel safety.

A’s News Clips, Friday, September 16, 2011 Oakland A's delay Detroit Tigers' title party By Joe Stiglich, Oakland Tribune The Detroit Tigers arrived in town Thursday with a 12-game winning streak and a healthy dose of motivation for the A's. By game time the Tigers needed only a victory to clinch the American League Central title. Instead the A's turned them back 6-1, halting a winning streak that tied for the majors' longest this season and postponing the Tigers' celebration. Detroit's magic number is one, meaning the next Tigers victory or loss by the Cleveland Indians hands Detroit its first division title since 1987. But the A's would like to delay the Tigers' party. "We don't want them to mess up Mike's room over there," right fielder David DeJesus said in reference to Mike Thalblum, the A's visiting clubhouse manager. Oakland knows all about opposing teams celebrating on its home field. The Rangers clinched the A.L. West last season in Oakland with a Sept. 25 victory. "We didn't like it last year, and we wouldn't like it this year," A's shortstop Cliff Pennington said. "If you can, beat them and (delay) it and make them celebrate after a loss." The A's welcomed Coco Crisp back to the lineup after the switch-hitting center fielder missed eight of the previous 10 games with a sore right ankle. Crisp hit leadoff in place of injured Jemile Weeks and went 3 for 5 with an RBI and stolen base.
