In that span, the Grizzlies pitching staff 2021 12-6 have tossed five shutouts and allowed three runs or fewer 20 times (18-2 record). Over eight away series, the Grizzlies have yet to lose one of them, picking up five at Fresno 6-6 wins and three ties. GOTSIS GOES FOR THE GRIZZLIES: The Grizzlies starting pitcher tonight is righty Noah Gotsis, who will be appearing in his fifth game (third start) since joining Fresno. Gotsis was a four-year letterwinner at Regis University in Denver, Colorado. Regis University is a private Jesuit college and is about a seven minute drive away at Stockton 6-0 from Coors Field. HOME SWEET STOCKTON: The last time the Fresno Grizzlies played the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark, the Grizzlies completed a six-game sweep of the 8/31 at Stockton 7:05 pm Ports. In the series, Fresno outscored Stockton 56-16, which included an 18-0 win on July 15th. The 18-run margin was the largest shutout by the Grizzlies in their fran- chise history. Fresno posted 16 or more runs two times, which would beat the amount of runs Stockton had in the entire six games combined. The Grizzlies pitching staff 9/1 at Stockton 7:05 pm also hurled two shutouts on consecutive evenings. Finally, Rockies top prospect Zac Veen had an outstanding series and was awarded the Low-A West Player of the Week. During the week, Veen went 12-for-18 (.667) with five homers, one double, 14 RBI, 12 runs, five walks, one hit-by-pitch and one stolen base. On July 15th, Veen went 4-for-4 with two wallops, six RBI, four runs, two walks and a stolen base. The Rockies top prospect reached base six times, the most by a Fresno batter since Alex 9/2 at Stockton 7:05 pm Presley did it on June 1, 2015 against Oklahoma City. For Veen, his four hits, two clouts, six RBI, four runs and 10 total bases were all season-highs for the Grizzlies of- fense in 2021. Veen wasn’t done yet though, as he went 5-for-6 with a tater, three RBI, five runs, two walks and a hit-by-pitch in the twin bill July 17th against the Ports. In Game 1, Veen went 3-for-3 with his fourth homer in three contests, driving in three runs and scoring four times. In the nightcap, Veen continued his hot hitting at the 9/3 at Stockton 7:05 pm plate, going 2-for-3. In the top of the fifth, Veen singled to right to set the all-time California League/Low-A West record for reaching base safely 15 consecutive times. He broke Thad Bosley’s record of 14, set with the Salinas Angels in 1976. In that streak, Veen had 10 hits, four walks and one hit-by-pitch. Four of those 10 hits were 9/4 at Stockton 7:05 pm dingers. To wrap up his series at Banner Island Ballpark, Veen went 2-for-4 with another moonshot, one double, four RBI, two runs and a walk on July 18. RUNNING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS: Eddy Diaz swiped one bag Saturday night against the Modesto Nuts, giving him 44 stolen bases with the Grizzlies on the 9/5 at Stockton 6:05 pm season. Diaz is now in sole possession of second place on the Grizzlies’ franchise single-season steals list. Up next on the list is Tyler Graham, who swiped 60 bases back in 2011. Diaz’s 44 Fresno stolen bases are also more than six full season Minor League teams (Rochester, Las Vegas, Portland, Harrisburg, Memphis and Read- ing) and his 55 swipes between two levels are more than 17 full season Minor League teams. RUNNING WILD: The Fresno Grizzlies have been running wild on the basepaths this season. Fresno currently leads the Low-A West and are third in all of Minor PORTS STAFF League Baseball with 194 stolen bases. The Grizzlies franchise record for the most team steals in a single season is 209, set back in 2011. Fresno also has three play- ers that are ranked in the Top 10 of the Low-A West leaderboard and one player in the Top Two of Minor League Baseball in swipes. Rockies #30 prospect Eddy Diaz ranks first with 44 stolen bases in 52 attempts (Grizzlies, Low-A West) and ranks second in all of Minor League Baseball with 55 swipes in 68 tries (Spokane and Fres- Manager: Rico Brogna no). Rockies top prospect Zac Veen is tied for third with 31 steals in 47 attempts and Bladimir Restituyo is tied for fifth with 28 swipes in 33 tries, all with the Grizzlies. 39-60 (.394) PLAYOFFS?!: Prior to the start of the 2021 season, it was certain that there would be no playoffs in Minor League Baseball, thanks to the ongoing global pandemic. In an article released by Baseball America in early July, they confirmed that Major League Baseball will implement a “revised” playoff plan, allowing each league to crown 1st season with Stockton a champion with a playoff series. The playoffs will be shortened to a single series, that features the top two teams (by record), regardless of division. Currently, the Grizzlies are first among the eight teams in the Low-A West, which would place them into the playoffs against the San Jose Giants. Both the Modesto Nuts and Rancho Pitching Coach: Chris Smith Cucamonga Quakes trail the Grizzlies and Giants in the playoff race.
