2017/08/29 Team Canada Recap & Results: Day Team Canada recap & results: Day 11 August 29, 2017 TAIPEI CITY, Chinese Taipei (Team Canada) – Competitions are officially over for Canada in Taipei. The athletes and teams still in the running have performed for the final time on Day 11 of the 29th Summer Universiade. Taipei 2017 website Team Canada website Streaming schedule on CBC sports Team Canada did not climb on the podium Tuesday, completing the World University Games with a total of 13 medals - four gold, five silver and four bronze. Five of these medals were won in artistic gymnastics, three in athletics, two in swimming, two in diving and one in weightlifting. A complete list of Canada's medallists can be found below. The closing ceremony of the 29th Taipei Summer Universiade will take place tomorrow, August 30, starting at 7:00 a.m. Eastern time. It can be seen live on the FISU website, and later on CBC Sports at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time. Here is a summary of the final competitions played today. Women’s water polo Team Canada finished the 2017 Taipei Universiade with a convincing win over Australia to take fifth place overall at the tournament. In the 16-8 win, Elyse Lemay Lavoie once again led the red and white with three goals, while the rest of the offence was spread out with six other Canadians scoring two in the contest. Men’s water polo At the end of their time in Taipei, the Canadian men’s water polo team finished in 10th place. They lost their final game 18-8 to the U.S. in their classification match. Devon Thumwood led the way for team Canada with four goals. Canada finished 2-5 at the Summer Universiade after being edged 7-6 in their Round of 16 match against Great Britain. Men’s volleyball The Canadian men finished 11th in Taipei after beating host Chinese Taipei 3-1 in the 11-12th place classification match. Canada finished 4-4 in the competition after starting 2-3 in pool play. Godefroy Veyron-Trudel led the attack with 15 kills, while adding two blocks. Irvan Brar finished with double-digits in kills with 12. This result is an improvement on 2015 in Gwangju, when they finished 19th. Men’s basketball The Canadian men’s basketball team lost their final game of the tournament 101-96 against Australia Tuesday. As he did for almost every game of the Universiade, Kaza Kajami-Keane led Canada with 25 points. Kevin Bercy (22 points, 15 rebounds) and Connor Wood (20 points) also contributed to the offence. Team Canada finishes in 10th place, after finishing seventh two years ago in Gwangju. Men’s soccer The men's soccer team ended their tournament with a 4-3 loss Tuesday against Brazil. Lukas MacNaughton, Kalen Park and James MacMillan scored for Canada, who finishes the Taipei Universiade in 10th place, an improvement over Gwangju in 2015 where the Canadians finished 13th. Wushu In Wushu, only one Canadian competed in the Taolu - Nagun & Nanquan event. Philip Wong scored 18.35, which earned him 10th place in the standings. In February, Erik stormed the slopes and MESSAGE won silver in the men’s downhill at the 2017 World Alpine Skiing Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. That achievement came FROM THE hot on the heels of his super-G gold at the same event. Mikael Kingsbury was once again the picture of consistency this season. CANADIAN He secured his sixth-straight Crystal Globe honour as the World OLYMPIC Cup overall winner. Cross country skier Alex Harvey has been a standout on the Canadian Nordic team for years but came alive FOUNDATION this year, winning gold in the 50km freestyle race at the world championships in March.

    2016 1 2017 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR AND PRESIDENT/CEO RICHARD CRÉPIN AND PETER NICOL 2016-2017 marked another year of transition for Gymnastics Canada as we wrapped up the last year of our previous strategic plan and launched our 2017-2020 Strategic Plan. We are very excited about our new strategic plan as it will provide focus to the organization in all we do over the next four years: OUR VISION: OUR MISSION: OUR VALUES: Be THE foundation Build the foundation. Collaboration. Dedication. sport in Canada. Create champions. Excellence. Innovation. Consistently achieve Inspire the nation. Integrity. international success. To support this new direction, an organizational review was conducted over the fall to ensure alignment of resources. After a detailed external review and recommendations, staffing was initiated to introduce some modifications and key roles in the organization. These changes to the structure will enhance our current capacity and allow GCG to continue moving forward and enable us to achieve the objectives outlined in our plan. Reflecting on the success of the past year, and the conclusion of the last cycle, the highlight was definitely the outstanding performances at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Of particular mention of course is Rosie MacLennan who was the official flag bearer for team Canada during the opening ceremonies, and who picked up her second Olympic gold medal in women’s trampoline. Rosie also broke records as this was a first ever back-to-back gold in trampoline gymnastics, and a first back-to-back gold for a Canadian summer athlete. Way to go Rosie - we are so very proud of you! Another important highlight of Rio was Ellie Black’s 5th place all-around finish in WAG, another all-time best showing for Canada.

    FROM HERE, WE SOAR 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT MESSAGE FROM IAN MOSS, CEO 2 I have now completed my first full year as CEO for Gymnastics Canada. In that year, who could have predicted a pandemic, a total shutdown of clubs, and a scramble across our community to manage what is, and what will be, a new reality for the foreseeable future. While it has certainly not been business as usual on any level, I do want to thank all our sport’s leaders, our staff, and the respective Boards for tackling these challenges and coming together at all levels to support the sport in the best way we can. At the Gymnastics Canada operational level, we have seen steady progress in all areas of programming. While the postponement of the Olympic Games and some of the Olympic qualification process created some challenges, I can say that we were well positioned for potential success in Tokyo. Having said that, the postponement also created some planning challenges in that a natural change of focus in high performance programming to Paris 2024 would have normally occurred in 2021. We now have to straddle the need to maintain focus on quality preparation for Tokyo while ensuring that Paris plans are also initiated so as not to lose traction on programming needs for the longer term. Our Safe Sport national strategy has also been strengthened this past year through continual dialogue with our membership and through pro-active action on the part of Gymnastics Canada in areas of education and legislation. We remain a leader in Canadian sport in this area and must continue to commit significant resources to this strategy if we truly wish to eradicate abuse and maltreatment in the sport.

    2019 Coaching Congress The Gymnastics Ontario Annual Coaching Congress weekend took place on August 24 & 25 at Milton Springers. This season also included a judge’s stream which allowed coaches to attend judging sessions as well. A special thank you to Milton Springer for hosting and to our guest WAG clinicians; Mike Durante, Betsy McNally and Stacey Umeh, as well as our own Ontario clinicians Paula Johnson, Kathy Kline, Mahmoud Zaerian and many more. This season our Congress also included many Judging sessions. Thank you to all those attended the weekend. Development Camps Thank you to Milton and Muskoka for hosting the first two development camps of the season as well as all the clubs that participated and to our wonderful clinicians. The success of the camps are because of the team work between all these individuals (clinicians, committee members, coaches and athletes) and clubs.
