Ants Inhabiting Oak Cynipid Galls in Hungary
North-Western Journal of Zoology 2020, vol.16 (1) - Correspondence: Notes 95 Ants inhabiting oak Cynipid galls in Hungary Oaks are known to harbour extremely rich insect communi- ties, among them more than 100 species of gall wasps (Hy- menoptera: Cynipidae) in Europe (Csóka et al. 2005, Melika 2006). Some gall wasp species are able to induce large and structurally complex galls that can sometimes be abundant on oaks, providing attractive shelters for several arthropod taxa including ant species. Ants are among the most important players in many ecosystems and they are also considered to act as ecosystem engineers (Folgarait, 1998). They are also famous for having ecological or physical interactions with a great variety of other organisms, such as gall wasps. Ants are known to tend Figure 1. Some oak cynipid galls secrete honeydew on their surface. This sweet substrate attracts ants and, in re- turn, the ants protect the galls from predators and parasi- toids (Abe, 1988, 1992; Inouye & Agrawal 2004; Nicholls, 2017). Beyond this obvious ecological interaction between gall wasps and ants, this association continues after the gall wasp’s life cycle has ceased. Certain galls are known to serve as either temporary or permanent shelter for many ant species. Some galls (e.g. An- dricus hungaricus (Hartig), Andricus quercustozae (Bosc), Aphelonyx cerricola (Giraud)) are large enough even for re- productive ant colonies. The advantages of galls as nesting logs are multifaceted. -

The galls support species-rich, closed communities of inquilines and parasitoids that have become a model system in community ecology. We review recent advances in the ecology of oak cynipids, with particular emphasis on life cycle characteristics and the dynamics of the interactions between host plants, gall wasps, and natural enemies. We assess the importance of gall traits in structuring oak cynipid communities and summarize the evidence for bottom-up and top-down effects across trophic levels. -

Abstract: 100 species of 683 specimens were collected in the Duna-Dráva National Park and the adjacent territory: Csokonyavisonta Wooded Pasture. Caliroa cothurnata (Serville, 1823) is new record for Hungary and for the Carpathian Basin. Rare species are: Xyela (Xyela) julii (Brébisson, 1818), Monoctenus juniperi (Linné, 1758), Dolerus (Poodolerus) blanki Liston, 1995 and Euura fuscomaculata (Förster, 1854). Aproceros leucopoda Takeuchi, 1939 is a newly introduced invasive species. Keywords: Hymenoptera, Symphyta, Somogy, Hungary, new record Introduction This year, the Southern part of Somogy County (Fig. 1) was investigated, namely the Somogy part of Danube-Dráva National Park and the protected wooded pasture at Csokonyavisonta. The sampling places are restricted to 3 different areas. These are the Protected Wooded pasture at Csokonyavisonta, Juniper woodlands at Darány and the floodplain of River Dráva at Vízvár. Csokonyavisonta Protected Wooded Pasture This wooded pasture (Figs. 2, 5 and 6) was a result of human activity, namely the traditional extensive livestock breeding (cattle and pigs) in the last centuries. The altitude of the area varies between 120-140 m. Within this small area, there are high diversity of habitats typical for Somogy county from the sand dunes till the wet and swampy depressions holding alder-moors. -

Abstract: Studies on Pipunculid flies in their natural environment are presented. Certain places are described, which proved to be astonishingly rieh in species. Some remarkable associating insect species are listed. As far as investigated comments on the behaviour of the adult flies are added. Key words: Diptera, Pipunculidae, behaviour, ecology Introduction Pipunculid flies are rather small mostly black insects, developing as parasitoids inside leafhoppers, with the ability of hovering (relationship to Syrphidae) and with enormous compound eyes, useful for males in search for females, and for females in search for a potential victim, a cicad larva. Most specimen of Pipunculidae studied so far were collected by Malaise traps. This material allows to describe the existing species, to secure their systematical stand, and to mark their distribution. Many questions in this chapter are still open. On the other hand the development as parasitoids in leafhoppers show fascinating aspects of adaptations to this life and even has an ecological/economical content regarding pest control. -

Gagarina 9: Poland e-mail: ulrichw @ cc.uni.torun.pl 'I'HE HYMENOPTERA OF A DRY MEADOW ON LIMESTONE: SPECIES COMPOSITION, ABUNDANCE AND BIOMASS ABSTRACT: In 1986 and 1988 the hymenopterous fauna of a semixerophytic meadow on lime stone near Gottingen (FRG) was studied using ground-photo-eclectors. A total of 4982 specimens be longing to 475 different species \vere collected. Extrapolations from double-log functions revealed that there may be as many as 1330 parasitoid species present per year. 455 of the 475 species were parasito ids. 155 of them attack dipterans. 48 lepidopterans. 36 beetles. 23 wasps, 22 plant hoppers and 13 ap hids. 47 of the species are egg-parasitoids and parasitoids of miners. ectophytophages count for 44 of 2 the \V asp species. The abundance of the wasp fauna was rather high ( 1120 ± 53 in d. m- a- I ( 1986) and 2 1 335 ± 42 ind. m - a- ( 1988). Most abundant were the parasitoids of miners, gall-makers and the egg parasitoids. Compared \vith the high abundance the biomass was low. In 1986 the wasps weighed a total 2 1 2 1 of 194 ± 24 n1gDW m- a- and in 1988 only 69 ± 20 mgDW m- a- . The parasitoids of ectophytopha gous lepidopterans and coleopterans counted for n1ore than half of the whole biomass. SPÄTH Abstract Records of 38 taxa of Symphyta collected recently by the authors in Corsica are presented. 15 identified species are additions to the known Corsican fauna. Pontania cyrnea sp. n. is described and compared with the morphologically similar P. joergcnseni ENSLIN. The family Xyelidae is recorded for the first time on the island. A total of 71 symphytan species are now known from Corsica. Introduction CHEVIN (1999) published a list of 56 species of sawflies and other Symphyta (woodwasps, orus- sids) from Corsica. His paper is based mainly on material made available to him by specialists in other insect groups who have collected there. He also included data on specimens from Corsica in the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (Paris), and mentioned a few taxa already recorded in papers by other symphytologists. The island had previously been visited by a single sawfly specialist, who examined only the leaf-mining species (BUHR 1941). In spring 2004 the junior author stated his intent to collect Symphyta in Corsica. -

A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 A SURVEY OF THE BEES AND WASPS OF FIFTEEN CHALK GRASSLAND AND CHALK HEATH SITES WITHIN THE EAST SUSSEX SOUTH DOWNS Steven Falk, 2011 Abstract For six years between 2003 and 2008, over 100 site visits were made to fifteen chalk grassland and chalk heath sites within the South Downs of Vice-county 14 (East Sussex). This produced a list of 227 bee and wasp species and revealed the comparative frequency of different species, the comparative richness of different sites and provided a basic insight into how many of the species interact with the South Downs at a site and landscape level. The study revealed that, in addition to the character of the semi-natural grasslands present, the bee and wasp fauna is also influenced by the more intensively-managed agricultural landscapes of the Downs, with many species taking advantage of blossoming hedge shrubs, flowery fallow fields, flowery arable field margins, flowering crops such as Rape, plus plants such as buttercups, thistles and dandelions within relatively improved pasture. Some very rare species were encountered, notably the bee Halictus eurygnathus Blüthgen which had not been seen in Britain since 1946. This was eventually recorded at seven sites and was associated with an abundance of Greater Knapweed. The very rare bees Anthophora retusa (Linnaeus) and Andrena niveata Friese were also observed foraging on several dates during their flight periods, providing a better insight into their ecology and conservation requirements. -

Abstract One of the greatest challenges for engineering science today is miniaturisation. Insects and other arthropods have solved many problems correlated with small size during their evolution. A variety of biomechanical systems of insects, adapted for attachment of parts of the body to each other or attaching the organism to a substrate, are the main topic of the present paper, There are eight fimdamental classes of attachment principles: clamp, spacer, sucker, expansion anchor, hooks, lock or snap, adhesive secretions, and friction. Different combinations of these principles occur in the majority of biological attachment structures. Friction-based probabilistic fasteners provide precise reversible coupling of surfaces with a minimum expenditure of force, Patent databases contain a huge number of ideas dealing with applications of existing fasteners. However, most of these applications use the same types of available hook-like tapes. Biological systems provide a variety of microscale surface patterns, which may serve as a source for Mure prototyping of novel types of releasable fasteners and micro-fasteners. An engineering approach is to copy the surface profile using available technologies. As an initial stage of prototyping diverse surface microsculpture, the low-viscosity wax cast technique is applied to produce surface casts, Since forces in the contact areas of most biological systems have not been previously measured, the fust step in this direction is taken toward identification of the interesting properties of systems. -
