Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -
LANCER “Second Storm”
LANCER “Second Storm” LANCER’s new album “Second Storm” is a lesson in melodic metal and follows a long tradition of outstanding Swedish Metal Bands like Hammerfall, Sabaton and many more! The album has been recorded in the world famous Leon Music Studios with producer Gustav Ydenius (Steelwing, Mustasch, Enforcer) and the cover artwork has been painted by Dimitar Nikolov (who has previously made artwork for Steelwing and Katana). The Swedish melodic metal band draws its inspiration from classical acts like Iron Maiden, Helloween and Gamma Ray, adding a personal and modern touch to the sound. LANCER met at the Music Academy of Ingesund in Arvika, Sweden, and the common passion for heavy metal forged them together and LANCER was born. They invaded the metal scene in the spring of 2012 with their debut EP “Purple Sky”. The EP got a warm welcome from all around the world and gave the band a record deal with the Swedish label Doolittle Group AB, owned by the world famous metal vocalist Christian Liljegren (Narnia) and a deal with Japanese label King Records at this time. I early 2013 the follow up to the “Purple Sky” EP, LANCER’s self-titled debut album was released world wide. The album was produced by Tommy Reinxeed and Ronny Milianowicz (previous collaborations with Hammerfall, Michael Kiske and Timo Tolkki to name a few!), and it received amazing reviews from the metal press all around the world. Japanese Burrn Magazine gave the album 75/100 and Sweden Rock Magazine 7/10, naming the band a new hope for European power metal, and it received even higher grades from several European and American reviewers. -

Lost in Forever - LIVE Stratospheric? Beyond The Black are most certainly that. You’re in doubt? Let’s explain… …Only two years ago, dynamic frontwoman and world-class vocalist Jennifer Haben and her band colleagues celebrated their live debut on stage at the legendary Wacken Open Air 2014. A few months later they were supporting the legendary SAXON on their UK tour. On February 13th 2015 the band released their debut full-length album Songs of Love and Death, which hit the German top 20 album charts, and which was produced by melodic metal maestro Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Edguy, Epica, Kamelot, Rhapsody). You’ve probably already guessed that the album was royally received throughout Europe, with Haben establishing herself as one of the leading voices in hard rock and metal music. Beyond The Black continued to conquer the road. They played their own headliner tour in spring and autumn 2015, and featured at several of Germany’s biggest rock & metal- festivals. Momentum is beautiful thing; Beyond The Black supported Queensrÿche in Holland and Within Temptation in Switzerland, and their incredible ascent culminated in them receiving the “Best Debut Album 2015” Metal Hammer Award. Martin Häusler Viele Fans „anspruchsvoller“ Musik, die Mitte der 1970er geboren sind, dürften in ihrer Jugend ihre ersten Erfahrungen mit Dreizehn-Minuten-Songs, virtuosen Performances und episch aufgebauten Kompositionen voller thematischer Wechsel und Entwicklungen mit den beiden „Keeper Of The Seven Keys“-Alben von Helloween gemacht haben. Metal-Alben, die weit mehr boten, als der Metal der späten Achtziger für gewöhnlich zu bieten hatte und konsequenterweise auch außerhalb des Spartenpublikums viele Fans gewannen – ähnlich wie fast zeitgleich Die Toten Hosen im Punkrock. Wo „die Hosen“ allerdings zum Unmut der Altfans beständig diesen Anspruch weiterverfolgten, verloren Helloween das Mainstream-Publikum bei Line-up-Wechseln und nach dem experimentellen (aber großartigen!) „Chameleon“-Album. Die folgende Rückkehr ins Metal-Genre hielt die Band am Leben, aber eine ganze Reihe Nachwuchsmetaller, die ihrerseits hörbar von Helloween beeinflusst waren, zog langsam an den Innovatoren vorbei. Doch Helloween haben sich in ihrer seit 2005 beständigen Besetzung mit großartigen Alben stetig ihren Platz zurückerkämpft, und als 2016 mit Kai Hansen und Michael Kiske die beiden Ex-Sänger der Band wieder zum festen Line-up stießen, fanden sich Helloween plötzlich genau da, wo sie 1989 gewesen waren: auf der Höhe einer Erfolgswelle. Nun erscheint das erste gemeinsame Album der siebenköpfigen Schlüsselmeister-Truppe – und Gitarrist Sascha Gerstner hat sich die Zeit genommen, Prog-Betreuer Sascha G. (nicht verwandt oder gar identisch), alles Wissenswerte zum „Helloween“-Album zu verraten. Die Rezension zum Album (#TotW auf BetreutesProggen.de i.d. KW24) findet Ihr übrigens genau hier! Heavy-metal in the 1970s was Blue Oyster Cult, Aerosmith, Kiss, AC/DC, Journey, Boston, Rush, and it was the most theatrical and brutal of rock genres. It was not easy to reconcile this genre with the anti-heroic ethos of the punk era. It could have seemed almost impossible to revive that genre, that was slowly dying, in an era that valued the exact opposite of machoism, and that was producing a louder and noisier genre, hardcore. Instead, heavy metal began its renaissance in the same years of the new wave, capitalizing on the same phenomenon of independent labels. Credit goes largely to a British contingent of bands, that realized how they could launch a "new wave of British heavy metal" during the new wave of rock music. Motorhead (1), formed by ex-Hawkwind bassist Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster, were the natural bridge between heavy metal, Stooges/MC5 and punk-rock. They played demonic, relentless rock'n'roll at supersonic speed: Iron Horse (1977), Metropolis (1979), Bomber (1979), Jailbait (1980), Iron Fist (1982), etc. -

ALBUMFACT BEYOND THE BLACK ”Heart Of The Hurricane“ Out: August 31st 2018 Beyond The Black – symphonic metal full of energy, straightforward and without any compromises! Their engines are hot, and roaring straight into the “Heart Of The Hurricane”. The title of the third album is not just a catchy phrase – it’s a promise. It’s the result of two years of work skyrocketing the band to the next level, along with a tasty appetizer for their upcoming live appearances. Their debut “Songs Of Love And Death” from 2015 has already struck like a bomb. It was in the Top 15 of the German Album Charts for weeks on end, and received honors suchs as the prestigious German “Metal-Hammer Award” for “Newcomer Of The Year”. The follow-up “Lost in Forever” from 2016 was an even bigger success and hit the German Charts at number 4. This led Beyond The Black on a wide spread, and almost always sold- out, tour hitting Germany, the UK, Russia, Japan and far beyond. Since 2014, the band has been thrilling their fans as a regular guest at Wacken Open Air and was a celebrated support act for Aerosmith, Korn, the Scorpions, Saxon, Within Temptation and countless other top international acts. In 2017 one of the biggest German TV-Stations, Sat1, chose “Night Will Fade” as to the title track for the successful series “Die Ketzerbraut”. That opened Beyond The Black up to millions of new listeners and when singer Jennifer had a cameo appearance in the series, fans could finally put a face to the name.
