The Trades Hall Part of Our History You aid them friends, with more than empty praise, Your contribution will assist to raise A people’s palace on yon vacant soil- A palace built and own’d by hardy sons of toil1 Image: State Library of Victoria Trades Hall, Corner of Lygon and Victoria Streets, Carlton (Photographed by John T. Collins in 1964) At a time when the nation’s biggest convenience store chain is being cast as ‘rorting wages of its workers’ it is worth noting that the history of one of the world’s earliest trade union buildings is in Carlton, on the fringe of the central city, originally solely financed and built by the workers to serve as a place for the labour movement. Melbourne building workers had successfully taken up an issue first raised by Sydney stonemasons for an Eight Hour Day. The skilled tradesmen, stonemasons, bricklayers, carpenters, joiners, plumbers, painters, slaters, quarrymen, coach builders, were Chartists or radicals who had emigrated from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales, who had settled in cheaper suburbs like Collingwood, Fitzroy, North Melbourne and Richmond, who considered themselves ‘the fraternity of labour’, ‘the working bees of society’, ‘the producing classes’ and ‘the pioneers of the colony’.2 3 Their leader’s names are recorded on an honour board on the main staircase of the present building including Charles Don, Thomas Vine, James Stephens, James Galloway and Benjamin Douglass. Their families were also involved as the original Eight Hours flag was hand stitched by Vine’s three daughters.

Melbourne’s Rockin’ Venues The Palais Theatre Most punters in Melbourne have had a Palais experience at least once. Maybe you saw The Rolling Stones in ’66, or went to Jesus Christ Superstar or The Andrew Durant Memorial Concert in the 70’s? Today it remains a grand old dame, still hosting iconic shows. Here is a cool link to its history: https://palaistheatre.com.au/venue/venue-history Armstrong Studios Basically, it was our Abbey Road. Whispering Jack was recorded here, and many other acts came to avail themselves of its world class facilities. (U2, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Bob Dylan, Split Enz, Crowded House and many more) Bill Armstrong started out in a terraced house in South Melbourne before moving operations to an old butter factory in Bank street. • 175 Years of the Melbourne Athenaeum Library - Where to from Here?
175 years of the Melbourne Athenaeum Library - where to from here? Paper presented at the Library History Forum, State Library of NSW, November 2014. Rose Blustein, Honorary Librarian This year, the Melbourne Athenaeum Library, Victoria’s oldest subscription library is celebrating its 175th birthday. Established in 1839 the Melbourne Athenaeum has operated in its current building for almost 175 years. The fact that the Melbourne Athenaeum continues operating to this day can be 1 attributed to its ability to integrate itself into the social, cultural and at times, political life of Melbourne society. Critical to its survival is that the building at 188 Collins is owned administered by a Committee of Management which not only provides sound financial management but also ensures that the library has a permanent and stable home. Today in Melbourne and surrounding areas, there is a vast network of public libraries providing most services without charge. With a reputation for an excellent crime fiction collection our library still attracts a membership of around 1000, with readers enjoying the ambience of the physical space. But let us go back to the beginning The First Fleet not only brought convicts, soldiers, plants and animals from Britain to the new colony, it also brought New South Wales' first printing press and first books. The first, albeit unsuccessful, attempt to establish a public library in the new colony of New South Wales was an appeal to the British public by the Reverend Samuel Marsden, begun in 1809, for books and money for a library of 'carefully selected books suited to the settlers employed in agriculture, the soldiers and the convicts'.
