Often in a family there is at least one member who collects and preserves family history and photographs. Mrs. Margaret Isaac of Denver is the member of her family who has been doing those things for a number of years. Mrs. Isaac, a native of Meeker, Colorado, is a graduate of the University of Denver, and has collected much Colo­ rado history. She makes her home with her husband, Gerhard J. Isaac, and their two sons, John and David. Through Mrs. Isaac's intense interest in western history she encouraged her Great-aunt, Mrs. Amanda Hardin Brown, to relate her pioneering experiences for permanent preservation. Amanda Hardin was the daughter of John Hardin, a native of Kentucky, who grew up in Missouri, on a farm. In 1847, when he was twenty-one years of age, he joined a party of traders and went over­ land to California. After working in the mines there for two years, he returned to the States by way of the Isthmus of Panama. On June 22, 1852, John Hardin married Sarah J. Hand. In 1864 he brought his family to Colorado. Amanda, fourth child of John and Sarah Hardin, told many incidents of her life to Mrs. Isaac, who wove them into a whole, and has made the story available for publication.-Editor. I was born November 21, 1862, on my Father's farm, two and one-half miles from the little town of Bethany, in Harrison County, Missouri.

    NATIVE AMERICAN TIMELINE FOR LARIMER COUNTY, CO From an archaeologist’s perspective, the legacy of human presence in Northern Colorado exceeds more than 13,000 years of indigenous peoples living in, and migrating through, this unique eco-tone where the plains meet the mountains. Beginning at the end of the last Ice Age when extinct megafauna like mammoth and sabertooth tigers inhabited the area, these early Native peoples developed large fluted weaponry known as Clovis projectile points in order to survive. They were followed by hunters who followed the migration routes of a now extinct species of bison, bison antiquus, more than 15 to 25% larger than today’s bison. Dating back to more than 12,000 years ago, this era is known as the Folsom period and is evidenced in a world famous archaeological site, Lindenmeier, located just north of Fort Collins. Projectile points were found in 1924 by a local family of avocational archaeologists, the Coffins, on the ranch land of their friend, William Lindenmeier. This eventually became known as the Lindenmeier Archaeological Site and is considered significant because it contained evidence of people inhabiting the area, rather than just hunting and butchering bison. It continues to be the largest Folsom site of this type, with the largest quantity of artifacts in all of North America. Excavated by the Smithsonian Institution from 1934 to1940, the site uncovered amazing tools as well as materials coming from long distances. The excavations also uncovered some of the very earliest beads from a variety of materials, bone tools used for sewing, and other decorative items.

    THESIS CLOUDS OVER FORT COLLINS: SETTLEMENT, URBAN EXPANSION, AND FLOODING ALONG A LAYERED LANDSCAPE Submitted by Tristan Purdy Department of History In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Colorado State University Fort Collins, Colorado Summer 2020 Master’s Committee: Advisor: Michael Childers Co-Advisor: Jared Orsi Neil Grigg Copyright by Tristan Purdy 2020 All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT CLOUDS OVER FORT COLLINS: SETTLEMENT, URBAN EXPANSION, AND FLOODING ALONG A LAYERED LANDSCAPE Fort Collins, Colorado, home to over 150,000 people along the northern Front Range, is prone to flood. This natural disaster threat is not a recent development nor a strictly natural problem. Rather, flooding in Fort Collins is informed by the interaction of the local environment and the city’s growth and development beginning in the mid-nineteenth century. This thesis explores the historical roots of Fort Collins’s flood threat by considering the social, economic, and political factors that informed the physical shape of the city and how the city interacted with the watershed within which it sat. By tracing how the city’s agrarian root’s informed its location, and how a university, (usually) pleasant weather, and westward migration paved the way for urban and suburban expansion, this thesis displays flooding not as an exterior threat, but a natural process that has become enmeshed in Fort Collins’s physical structure. Fort Collins is just one of many mid-sized American cities across the American West whose growth over the past century-and-a-half has created increasingly pressing environmental concerns. Addressing contemporary and future concerns over further growth and an increasingly unstable environment in Fort Collins and cities like it begins with understanding the historic interconnections between city growth and the environmental problem in question.

(as early as Feb 1826) William H. Ashley camps with his brigade of free trappers at the foot of the Laramie Hills, making a trappers’ cache of extra gunpowder. 1840s Emigrant highway to Oregon and California ascends the Platte, North Platte and Sweetwater Rivers to cross the Continental Divide. 1849 Party of Cherokee traverse across southern Wyoming to Green River; the route doesn’t have a name, and was briefly called Evans’ Road, but the name that stuck was Cherokee Trail (all foothills to Poudre gateway, up to Laramie Plains, westward beyond Green River). Jul 1858 Prospectors strike gold near junction of Cherry Creek and South Platte (where Denver quickly sprouted). Apr 1859 French traders (with Indian families) establish settlement on the Poudre, first called Colona. Oct 6 1860 The town site of Colona is reorganized under the name Laporte, meaning “the gate.” Feb 1861 Congress passes enabling act for Territory of Colorado. Dec 2 1861 First slate of county officials is elected by voters. Spring 1862 Goldrush in present-day Idaho; Cherokee Trail was shortest route to there from Denver. (during Civil War) Stage line service reroutes to a safer route – the Cherokee Trail – due to Indians wreaking havoc along original route. Jul 1862 Army established two new posts to guard along this new route: Fort Halleck (at the foot of Elk Mountain) and Camp Collins, on the north bank of the Poudre at Laporte.

    SNOWY CAPS TO LOVELAND’S TAPS Printed June 1989 Chapter One The Early History Loveland’s water story begins with the Big Thompson River. Before the arrival of the white man, Arapaho hunting parties would ride through the valley and camp along the river near the sulphur spring that bubbled out of the ground on the southeast side of Mariana Butte. Explorers wending their way westward used the river as a natural pathway through the wilderness. From 1837 to 1842, Philip Thompson explored, trapped, and traveled along the river known to the Indians as the Big Pipe. Thompson, in his exploration of the river now named for him, may have been the first white man to travel through the valley. John C. Fremont’s expedition followed the Big Thompson River in 1843. Fremont described it as a “fine stream, sixty-five feet wide and three feet deep.” Fur trappers camped on its banks in search of beaver and other animals. Brothers Nicholas and Antoine Janis set up a trapper’s camp along the Big Thompson River and stayed several years before moving on. Mariano Medina arrived at their camp in the summer of 1858. Medina had a colorful background as a guide, interpreter, and mountain man, and was the first permanent settler in the Big Thompson Valley. He claimed to have traveled with Fremont’s party as interpreter and introduced Kit Carson as an old friend when Carson visited him in 1868. As the demand for beaver decreased, mountain men started looking for permanent locations for their new homes. Prospectors who failed to make their fortunes in the Colorado goldfields took a second look at the dry land of the High Plains, which the explorers Zebulon Pike and Major Steven Long described as a virtual desert.
