TASMANIAN AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY Incorporated WYNYARD AIPORT – A BREIF HISTORY Wynyard Airport – A Brief History Author: W Dearing, December 2020 The first aerodrome at Wynyard was built by volunteers on an old racecourse. However, within a year of completion in 1932, the aerodrome was found to be too small for larger passenger and mail aircraft. A larger aerodrome was developed on the southern outskirts of the town and was officially opened on 26 February 1934. A further opening ceremony on 1st January 1935 was attended by the Prime Minister of the time, Joseph Lyons. This early development is described in this article on or website. In the mid-1970s, Federal policy was adopted that would eventually see the ownership and maintenance of all airports outside of capital cities transferred from the Commonwealth to the respective local authorities. Under the new scheme, the future of the Wynyard Aerodrome was cast into doubt after Federal funding was secured for upgrading the Devonport Airport in August 1980; few if any areas of regional Australia had two major commuter and cargo airports only 60 km apart, would Wynyard also be upgraded ? After much political controversy, it wasn't until March 1985 that Wynyard’s future was assured when AU$5.2 million was allocated by the State and Federal governments to upgrade the Wynyard aerodrome. The upgraded aerodrome was officially opened on 15 February 1987, incorporating a sealed runway 1650 m long. Ownership had been transferred from the Commonwealth to the Burnie Port Authority and the Wynyard Aerodrome was renamed to Burnie Airport. The Burnie Airport Corporation Unit Trust acquired the Burnie Airport from the Burnie Port Corporation in 2001.

Rural & Regional Affairs and Transport Legislation Committee ANSWERS TO QUESTIONS ON NOTICE Additional Estimates February 2012 Infrastructure and Transport Question no.: 86 Program: 2.4 Division/Agency: (AAA) Aviation and Airports Topic: Archerfield Airport’s 2011/12-2031 Draft Master Plan Proof Hansard Page/s: 63 (14/02/2012) Senator Fawcett asked: Senator FAWCETT: The Archerfield plan at the moment indicates simultaneously a proposed extension of runway 28 right and at the same time has zoned an area for light industrial that would be slap in the middle of the runway and safety area. So, there is a direct conflict there straightaway, because if that development goes ahead then the runway extension cannot go ahead, which means the airport loses the potential to expand its operations. Why did that get approved? Mr Mrdak: The Archerfield master plan is currently in the process of development. There is an approved master plan, but Archerfield is currently going through the process of obtaining approval of a new master plan. To the best of my knowledge, we have sought resolution of a number of issues that we identified with the draft master plan, and Archerfield is currently working through those issues and we are awaiting a response from the airport. Senator FAWCETT: So, a conflict like that, if it was in this current plan, would not be approved? Mr Wilson: I would have to take the detailed question on notice rather than try to provide you with an answer off the cuff in regard to the technical aspects of the operation of an airport, but the underlying premise, as Mr Mrdak indicated, was that we would provide advice in regard to the ongoing operation of the aviation sector.

TASMANIAN AVIATION HISTORICAL SOCIETY Incorporated LAUNCESTON AIRPORT – A BRIEF HISTORY Launceston Airport – A Brief History Author: W Dearing, July 2020 On the 26th September 1927 the Australian Aero Club (Tasmanian Division) was incorporated in Launceston. Tasmania now had an aero club but no aerodrome or aircraft! Planning had commenced in 1926 to establish an aerodrome at Western Junction, but it took until late 1929 before the land was purchased. Throughout 1930, the site was cleared, levelled and grass sown. The Aero Club also built their Hangar and Clubhouse. The all-over grass airfield at Western Junction was the first official aerodrome operated by the Civil Aviation Authority in Tasmania. The airport was opened for use with the first plane flown off the drome being the Aero Club Gypsy Moth “VH-ULM” on the 23rd November 1930. The official opening on the 28th of February 1931, when almost 20,000 people gathered on Evandale Road for the opening by Colonel Brimsmead, the Controller of Civil Aviation. In 1940 the only Tasmanian RAAF Base was established on this site and No 7 Elementary Flying Training School commenced operations in September of that year. By late 1944 over 1,800 pilots were trained before the base was disbanded in August 1945. An excellent article written by Evandale historian Neil Louis details the history, and Evandale’s memorial, to the aircrew who trained at Launceston. During the period that encompassed the RAAF base’s operations the first air traffic control tower was built by the RAAF. Constructed in the early 1940’s the tower remained until replaced by the current structure in 1959.

25 July 2007 17 Years Flying with Sharp Airlines Sharp Airlines, south-west Victoria's own airline, was founded 17 years ago this August. "17 years ago, there was just me, a second pilot and one single-engined aircraft", said Malcolm Sharp, founder and Managing Director of Sharp Airlines. "Today, we have 22 staff and a fleet of 10 aircraft". "17 years ago, we flew locally and when we needed a twin-engined aircraft we had to charter it. Today we fly 44 flights a week and will cover 15,000km between Hamilton, Portland, Essendon and Avalon". Seventeen years on, Sharp Airlines is Victoria's only family-owned airline. It is Victoria's major regional airline, and one of Australia's most important and visible regional airline companies. "Fortunately, with a dedicated staff and hard work, we've been able to grow and expand", said Mr Sharp. "As well as scheduled commercial airline services, we provide charter services, professional pilot training, engineering services, specialist aerial work, and a program of 'flying visits' where clients choose their own destination". Inspired by Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon, Malcolm Sharp started flying as a 15 year-old and gained his pilot's licence at 17. To raise the necessary funds for flight training, he worked as a trades assistant on the Alcoa construction site in Portland. "Those two years gave me a special bond with Portland, which continues to this day." Alcoa is now a long-standing client of Sharp Airlines while Hamilton and Portland remain the hub of Sharp Airlines' enterprise.
