Rosen Rhythm andBluesCruise,Rhythm October 2007. onthe Legendary Joe LouisWalker In 1985, after a decade of playing and singing nothing but gospel music with a quartet called the Spiritual Corinthians, 35-year-old Joe Louis Walker decided to get back to the blues. The San Francisco–born singer-guitarist had begun playing blues when he was 14, at first with a band of relatives and then with blues-singing pimp Fillmore Slim before becoming a fixture at the Matrix, the city’s preeminent rock club during the psychedelic Summer of Love, backing such visiting artists as Earl Hooker and Magic Sam. Michael Bloomfield became a close friend and mentor. The two musicians lived together for a period, and the famous guitarist even produced a Walker demo for Buddah Records, though nothing came of it. Then, in 1975, Walker walked away from the blues completely in order to escape the fast life and the drugs and alcohol associated with it that he saw negatively affecting Bloomfield and other musician friends. Walker knew nothing about the blues business when he started doing blues gigs again around the Bay Area with a band he’d put together, as a member of Oakland blues singer-guitarist Haskell “Cool Papa” Sadler’s band, and (for a tour of Europe) with the ad hoc Mississippi Delta Blues Band.

THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 6, July 2010 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Deb Lubin The period since the last newsletter was published was very busy, with planning for upcoming blues society events, going out to hear our favorite local blues bands, and our annual pilgrimage to Memphis in May for the Blues Music Awards. The BMAs are a wonderful event that all blues lovers should attend at least once. This year in Memphis, we got to see many of our favorite musicians from the Bay Area, among them Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, including Kid Andersen; the entire Tommy Castro Band, which took home several awards; Laura Chavez and Kennan Shaw from Candye Kane's band; Maria Muldaur, and others with Bay Area ties. I had so much fun reconnecting with old friends both on and off the stage. Meanwhile, the GGBS is rolling. We're getting ready for several big events that we're either sponsoring, partnering with, or supporting, including the 5th annual Redwood City Blues Festival in July, the first U.S. events of the European-based charity United by Music , the San Jose Jazz Festival in August, and events to select a member band to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011, among others. Please look for information about all of these events in this issue of the newsletter. In addition, East Bay musician/cat lover/pre-war blues specialist Joel Fritz reviews four CDs by local bands. SF-based singer Cathy Lemons reviews E.C.

Some of these musicians, like John Hammond, Rory Block and Taj Mahal, sought out the rediscovered 1930s bluesmen at the Newport Folk Festivals. Others, like Robert Cray and Junior Watson, soaked up the west coast sounds of T-Bone Walker and Big Joe Turner in the storied ghetto clubs of Watts. Charlie Musselwhite came up on Memphis and Chicago blues, while Stevie Ray Vaughan and Marcia Ball went for the Texas grit of Albert Collins and Gatemouth Brown. By 1967, these and other young musicians were poised to breathe new life into the blues. Duke Robillard had formed the initial Roomful of Blues band. Bob Margolin was about to become Muddy Waters guitarist. Joe Louis Walker was living with Michael Bloomfield in San Francisco. Tommy Shannon played Woodstock behind Johnny Winter. B L U E I N K APRIL 2016 Gator By the Bay Brings Musicians Together in Exciting Pairings Now in its 15th year, Gator By the Bay, May 5-8, 2016, has become a wildly popular San Diego festival tradition known for presenting an eclectic mix of musical styles and a fun- filled atmosphere. Wander among the festival’s seven stages and you can listen to everything from authentic Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco music to Chicago and West Coast Blues, from Latin to Rockabilly and Swing. In recent years, Gator By the Bay has also earned a stand-out reputation for bringing together stellar combinations of musicians in innovative mash-up performances, presenting musical groupings you won’t hear anywhere else. This year is no exception. On Saturday, May 7, San Diego’s own multiple gold guitarist Johnny Vernazza will share the Mardi Gras Stage with blues greats Roy Rogers and John Németh. Often lauded as the “Master of the Slide Guitar”, Roy Rogers’ distinctive style is instantly recognizable. He’s shared duets with such greats as John Lee Hooker and Allen Toussaint, and teamed up with the likes of Norton Buffalo and Ray Manzarek. Harmonica virtuoso, vocalist and songwriter John Németh has multiple Blues Music Awards nominations to his name, and his album, ‘Memphis Grease’, won Best Soul Blues Album at the 2015 Blues Music Awards. He has been nominated for the Blues Music Awards 2016 B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, to be given out on May 5. Other notable combined artists’ performances include Sugaray Rayford, Alabama Mike & the Drop Ins with harmonica master Rick Estrin and harmonica and guitar whiz-kid Jon Atkinson on Friday evening, May 6, and Jon Atkinson with Rick Estrin and Fabulous Thunderbird alumna Kim Wilson on Saturday, May 7.

Everything Gonna Be Alright "Unk" In Funk, Muddy Waters' 1974 release, saw the Chicago bluesman further building on the electric blues of albums like Electric Mud (1968) and After The Rain (1969). It would be one of the last collections of original material that Waters would record with Chess Records, after a nearly 30-year association with the label. The record included a core line up of famed blues players who would remain Waters' backing band for the duration of his career, featuring Pinetop Perkins on piano, (Earl Hooker) Luther Johnson (The Nighthawks) and Bob Margolin on guitar, Calvin "Fuzz" Jones on bass, (The Legendary Blues Band) and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on drums, (Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker) with additional guest appearances by George Buford, Paul Oscher (Louisiana Red), and Carey Bell (Willie Dixon) on harmonica. Even at the age of 61, Waters sounds at the top of his game on "Unk" In Funk. His booming, powerful blues vocals dominate the album's fuzzy, electric orchestration. Overhauled versions of Waters classics like "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and "Just To Be With You" sound fresh as ever, and newer tracks like "Katie" and "Waterboy, Waterboy" are classic and organic additions to Waters' discography. Overlooked and underrated in its time, "Unk" In Funk is a pinnacle album from Waters' catalog. Format: CD Cat.
