Joseph Goodrich's compilation of a selection of their letters back and forth was revelatory. It's amazing to realize that two cousins so frequently wracked with insecurity and so cuttingly at each other's throats were able to produce such a long string of brilliant novels and short stories. This is a must-have for EQ fans, but also a fascinating look behind the scenes for anyone interested in the process of literary creation and collaboration.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. How did they do it?By Craig AlanFascinating look at two distinct, one would say neurotic, personalities who despite complex feelings about each other, managed to produce an impressive body of work in their field. Strung together, these letters can be compelling and frustrating to read, since the cousins are both guilty of too much self pity and hand wringing. That said, their keen intelligence shines through and offers an exceptional view of construction and plot structure of classic detective novels. More than that, however, is the sense of frailty in human relationships and how people react so differently in difficult situations. Recommended, even if the anger gets repetitive sometimes.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great book!By wayne j. kozakEllery Queen is my favorite author. Lee (better known by their joint byline of Ellery Queen) produced some of the most ambitious mystery novels of the mid- 20th Century. Yet their relationship was acrimonious, marred by pain, financial and professional dependency and mistrust. Here, culled from the Dannay archives by author and dramatist Joseph Goodrich, is the selected correspondence of these two volatile men during a period of their most important creative achievements. With a Foreword by longtime television producer-writer William Link (Columbo, Ellery Queen, Murder, She Wrote).
