Abstract: The American crocodile, Crocodylus acutus, is widely distributed in the American neotropics. It is endangered throughout most of its range and is listed as vulnerable by the International Union for the Conservation of Natural Fauna and Flora (IUCN) and on Appendix I of the Convention for the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Despite this listing, there are few published reports on population status throughout most of its range. We investigated the status of the C. acutus, at several locations along the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We carried out spotlight and nesting surveys from 2007-2009 along the Costa Rican Pacific coast in four distinct areas, coastal areas of Las Baulas (N=40) and Santa Rosa (N=9) National Parks and the Osa Conservation Area (N=13), and upriver in Palo Verde National Park (N=11). -

Major achievements This report summarizes the main achievements of the Second Debt-for-Nature Swap between Costa Rica and the United States (based on the U.S. Tropical Forest Conservation Act and so known as “TFCA II”) during 2017. The Forever Costa Rica Association is the Administrator of this initiative, while an Oversight Committee comprised of representatives of the U.S. and Costa Rican Governments, The Nature Conservancy, EARTH University, and The Organization for Tropical Studies, provides overall direction and approves disbursements to grantees to implement the Debt Swap/TFCA II. The highlights of 2017 show significant progress meeting TFCA II initiative`s mandate: Since its beginning in 2012, 80 projects have been awarded for a total of nearly US$4,161,000. The eighth Request for Application (RFA) was prepared in 2017, for a total amount of US$896,000. Submitted proposals focused on climate change, effective management, ecological representativeness and/or social participation and governance. During 2017, six more non-governmental organizations applied and were accepted as Eligible Entities, bringing to forty-six the number of local and national organizations registered to implement TFCA II projects. In early 2017, the TFCA II designed its Strategic Plan 2017-2021 with the involvement and expert criteria from a relevant group of people, including the members of the Oversight Committee, officials of the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC), representatives of the Eligible Entities executing the projects, and staff of the Forever Costa Rica Association. -

Country and Sector Background Costa Rica is one of the world's leading proponents of environmentally sustainable development, pursuing social and economic growth in conjunction with a strong and healthy environment. The environmental policy of the government has been progressive, including use of economic instruments such as electricity surcharges and reforestation credits which are targeted at protecting forest ecosystems throughout the country. Conservation areas comprise 25t of the national territory, half of which are national parks or areas under strict protection. Although it is not a large country, Costa Rica holds five percent of the world's tropical forest species. As such, Costa Rica's natural assets have led to the development of a thriving Public Disclosure Authorized ecotourism industry, which earned revenues of $700 million in 1994. Nonetheless, Costa Rica experienced one of the highest rates of deforestation worldwide during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1950, forests covered more than one-half of Costa Rica; by 1995, forest cover declined to approximately twenty-five percent of the national territory. World Bank estimates indicate that eighty percent of deforested areas were converted to pastures and agriculture, principally due to inappropriate Government policies including cheap credit for cattle, land titling laws that rewarded deforestation, and rapid expansion of the road system. -

The phyllotaxis is spiral. The leaves are long, shiny, Amazon, including the Guianas and the West Indies (Brako biparipinnate, stipulate, with a small structure at the distal and Zarucchi 1993, Ducke 1949, Schery 1950). It is abundant end. Species density in the forest is close to 50 percent, but in coastal lowlands with moderate slope. Pentaclethra macrolo- decreases with sloping; it is common near rivers, creeks, and ba is formed by three neotropical disjunctive populations seasonally flooded zones. The species grows well in alluvial or (Hartshorn 1983b). The largest is found in the Amazon low- residual soils derived from basalts. It is also found in swampy lands of the Atlantic coast from northeast Venezuela to the or poorly drained areas with acid soils. -

We propose a method for seed shape quantification based on the comparison of the bi-dimensional images of the seeds with geometric figures. J index is the percent of similarity of a seed image with a figure taken as a model. Models in shape quantification include geometrical figures (circle, ellipse, oval ::: ) and their derivatives, as well as other figures obtained as geometric representations of algebraic equations. The analysis is based on three sources: Published work, images available on the Internet, and seeds collected or stored in our collections. Some of the models here described are applied for the first time in seed morphology, like the superellipses, a group of bidimensional figures that represent well seed shape in species of the Calamoideae and Phoenix canariensis Hort. ex Chabaud. -

Major achievements This report summarizes the main achievements of the Second Debt-for-Nature Swap between Costa Rica and the United States (based on the U.S. Tropical Forest Conservation Act and so known as “TFCA II”) during 2018. The Forever Costa Rica Association (FCRA) is the Administrator of this initiative, while an Oversight Committee (OC) comprised of representatives of the United States and Costa Rican Governments, The Nature Conservancy, EARTH University, and The Organization for Tropical Studies, provides overall direction and approves disbursements to grantees to implement the Debt Swap/TFCA II. Significant progress has been made in achieving TFCA II mandate: • The ninth Request for Application (RFA) was prepared in 2018, for a total amount of US$817,000. Submitted proposals focused on climate change, effective management, ecological representativeness and/or social participation and governance. • During 2018, one new non-governmental organization was accepted as Eligible Entity, bringing to forty-seven the number of local and national organizations registered to implement TFCA II projects. • In early 2018 the OC held a field visit to three wildlife protected areas (Braulio Carrillo National Park, Juan Castro Blanco National Park, and Bosque Alegre Wildlife Refuge). The TFCA II has implemented multiple projects in these sites and is expected to allocate more funds in the area in the near future. The OC met with park rangers and local actors to learn about the challenges they face and the progress they have achieved in the TFCA II-financed projects. -

BRIGHTSMITH1 ABSTRACT.ÐParrots that inhabit tropical lowland forests are dif®cult to study, are poorly known, and little information is available on their nesting habits, making analysis of community-wide nesting patterns dif®cult. I present nesting records for 15 species of psittacids that co-occur in southeastern Peru. The psittacid breeding season in this area lasted from June to April, with smaller species nesting earlier than larger species.
