  • Institutional Change in an Age of Internationalization: Globalization and the Soccer Club
Institutional Change in an Age of Internationalization: Globalization and the Soccer Club A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Political Science of the College of Arts and Sciences by Tiest M. Sondaal B.A., International Affairs, Xavier University M.A., Political Science, University of Cincinnati October 2011 Committee Chair: Richard J. Harknett, Ph.D ABSTRACT This dissertation contributes to the growing literature about globalization’s impact on local institutions with a focus on the interaction between global and local forces. Specifically, the dissertation examines the two theories of glocalization and grobalization that offer contrasting explanations about the impact of globalization on local institutions. While the theory of glocalization stresses the interpenetration of the global and the local resulting in increasing hybridization, grobalization predicts that globalization overwhelms local institutions resulting in increasing homogeneity. The research reveals that while both theories tested capture to some degree institutional dynamics, they ultimately overlook the enduring power of the local. Put differently, the study finds that globalization’s effects are not pre-determined and impact local institutions differently based on the local-societal setting and the local institutional capacity to withstand unifying pressures. As a corrective, my study introduces a third conceptual frame for understanding the global-local relationship that I term ‘localism anew’, which holds that local entities can be the driving force in transforming globalization by leveraging the local in order to succeed globally – something which grobalization cannot conceive and which glocalization overlooks.

The 2006 UEFA Champions League victors have no problems with the rulings on ‘locally-trained’ players introduced for the 2006/07 season. PHOTO: FOTO-NET Season 2006 – 2007 Contents Season President’s Message 3 2006 / 2007 1st Qualifying Round Results 4 2nd Qualifying Round Results 6 3rd Qualifying Round Results 8 Group Stage 10 Regulations 14 2 President’s Message The fifteenth season of UEFA Champions League football is a special one. A year ago, we were celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first-ever final in the old ‘European Cup’ and using that as a good excuse for some nostalgic reading of the history books. This season, the emphasis is well and truly on the future - the future of the game and the future of the people who play it. I’m referring to the new chapter in the regulations of this competition, where four places in each squad are earmarked for ‘locally-trained players’. You might not think that this is a major change. But, as time goes by, more places will be reserved for them and the 2006/07 campaign marks the first step in what I think is a very right direction. It was a subject we had discussed in great depth within our Executive Committee, within all sectors of the game and with people in political circles. And it is a decision which has my wholehearted support. Fortunately, I am by no means the only one who believes that talent needs to be developed and not just bought.

  • Notes on Passing Rhythms Liverpool FC and the Transformation of Football
Notes on Passing Rhythms Liverpool FC and the Transformation of Football Bill Shankly and Liverpool From 1976 to 1990 Liverpool won an astonishing 10 League titles in 15 seasons, finishing 2nd in all other seasons except 1980,81 – they also won the FA Cup twice and the European Club Champions 4 times. By way of contrast, in the 1990s, Liverpool won but 2 trophies. Bill Shankly, Liverpool manager from 1959 – 1974 became the founding father of the ‘modern’ Liverpool club. The playing styles adopted by Liverpool teams emphasized passing and movement with the importance of teamwork. Upon Shankly’s arrival in 1959, he convinced the board to ‘modernize’ the poorly developed training facilities at Melwood and transferred out 24 players in just over a years time, bringing in key young replacements. He will make players learn to kill the ball and move it all in the same action … he will make them practice complete mastery of the ball. In addition to Shankly, the most important of all the coaching staff was Bob Paisley. He often compared players to racehorses, noting their common ‘edginess’, and also the ways in which both responded to different sorts of training , dependent upon their temperament. Paisley was more a players’ pal than was Shankly. Nine points of Shankly: Obsession :– he was so obsessed that he would relate any topic of conversation to football. There are many quotes, too numerous to mention, to make the point. Scottish Socialism: - part of the Liverpool success at the time was built around the socialist ethic of collective effort with equal wages and no prima donnas.

A network-based assessment of the career performance of professional sports coaches S¸irag Erkol1 and Filippo Radicchi1 1Center for Complex Networks and Systems Research, Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana 47408, USA We consider two large datasets consisting of all games played among top-tier European soccer clubs in the last 60 years, and among professional American basketball teams in the past 70 years.
