Introduction

Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by , Provost of Eton, is an Independent Co-educational in the UK, The School has a strong track record of academic performance, with excellent value added scores, growing pupil numbers, high parental satisfaction and strong financial management. Because of the quality of its virtual learning platform and through sustained recruitment, pupil numbers are again growing, in spite of the latest lockdown. The School has an ambitious capital programme and is planning further growth in pupil numbers. The Headmaster is a member of the Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference.

Set in the spectacular Dales National Park, the School benefits from fast motorway and rail access to the rest of the UK, as well as proximity to international airports. The Senior School is currently around 60% boys and 40% girls; around 15% of pupils are foreign overseas pupils, many from Europe, and a further 10% are the children of expatriate families.

The School is a vibrant, demanding and supportive community which encourages pupils and staff to be involved in as broad a range of activities and interests as possible. Art, Drama and Music are especially strong, and the School has a national reputation for Sport. Sedbergh has its own Prep School located approximately eight miles away at Casterton.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral). The Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) is a key member of the Senior Management Team and will play an important part in the future strategy of the School. This position is required for September 2021. Key Tasks and Responsibilities

The Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) would have a key role in overseeing all aspects of the pastoral care and boarding provision at Sedbergh School.

The key responsibilities of the Senior Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be:

• Designated or Deputy Safeguarding Lead • To form a key part of the Senior Management Team leadership team • Oversight of the management of Boarding Houses, and line and budget management of Housemasters/Housemistresses and their Deputies and Assistants • To Chair the Calendar and Arts Planning Committees • All sanctions and rewards in the school and the staffing of them • All pastoral data • Heads of Houses • Inspection preparation (pastoral) • Pupil induction • Oversight of the Social programme including staffing • To work with the Chair of the Common Room and The Chaplain, Deputy Head on staff welfare • Oversight of the medical care of pupils • End of term arrangements including overseas travel • Oversight of the management of the Boarding Houses • To represent the school at various marketing and recruiting events and work with Sedbergh School International Limited (SSIL) • To undertake various administrative tasks associated with the running of the School

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

• Educated to Degree level or equivalent • Demonstrable evidence of success in middle or senior leadership posts • Child protection and safeguarding training • Evidence of continuing professional development

ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS:

• Strong empathic and interpersonal skills coupled with a genuine interest in young people • Excellent administrative and organisational abilities • A willingness to share your experience and expertise with colleagues • A flexible approach and a genuine desire to work in a team

DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS:

• Familiarity with boarding education • Experience in running or overseeing girls in a boarding environment • Child protection and safeguarding experience

Salary & Accommodation

Sedbergh has its own salary scale and the salary of the successful candidate will reflect the candidate’s experience. School accommodation may be available.

First Stage interviews will take place online with the School’s recruitment consultants LSC Education from Saturday 6 February 2021 to Thursday 11 February 2021.

Subject to any Covid-related restrictions at that time, final interviews will take place at Sedbergh School during week commencing Monday 22 February 2021; candidates will be required to arrive on the evening before the interview.

The final interview process will include: • Supper at School and overnight accommodation in a Boarding House • Assembly • A tour of the School with pupils • Lunch in a Boarding House • Teaching, observed by a member of staff (details to be provided with interview information) • Interviews with the Headmaster and other Senior staff • A presentation given to the Senior Management Team (topic supplied beforehand) • A compliance meeting with the HR Manager
