The School strives to serve the needs of the greater Silicon Valley region and the State of California by creating and disseminating knowledge through research and teaching, and by offering curricula that nurtures creative thinking and prepares our students for productive careers at industrial and academic settings in rapidly evolving areas of science and engineering. In the next decade, the School of Engineering will be a distinctive knowledge creator and educator in its chosen fields. We will provide an excellent education for all students, regardless of major, so the campus’s graduates become contributing citizens in a high technology society. Now in its fourth year, the School of Engineering has reached many significant milestones. The School’s reputation and visibility have risen nationwide. The student enrollment has doubled and the School now has 49 faculty members, almost doubling the faculty size in 1997. Over the next 10 years, the School will continually raise its reputation and impact while more than doubling its enrollment. By 2011, the School plans to educate approximately 15% of the campus’s students, a total of 2,231 FTE students comprising of 1,535 undergraduate majors and 696 graduate students with 126 faculty members. In November 2001, in its Monthly Labor Review, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projected that by 2010, there will be 168 million jobs in the United States, an increase of 15% over the year 2000. However, the School of Engineering is preparing students to enter a more robust job market than the average. According to the survey, "Computer and mathematical occupations are projected to add the most jobs, and grow the fastest among the eight professional and related occupations subgroups. The demand for computer-related occupations will continue to increase as a result of the rapid advances in computer technology and continuing demand for new computer applications." In fact, of the 30 fastest growing occupations of all types between 2000 and 2010, BLS lists eight occupations for which UCSC graduates are educated (including the planned Information Systems and Technology Management program). Of the eight occupations, the single highest rate of growth for a particular occupation is Computer Software Applications Engineer which is forecasted to grow by 100% and the lowest is 40% for Computer and Information Research Scientist. All jobs are in the highest quartile of salaries. Even with 126 ladder rank faculty members, the Baskin School of Engineering will remain small compared to our counterparts at other UC campuses. However, we have a unique opportunity due to our regional advantages to develop a truly distinctive School of Engineering that is committed to excellence and uniquely tailored to promote technological innovation to meet the grand challenges of our nation. Our goal is to develop a school that stands out in every aspect of teaching, research, and service to the profession. We shall provide Impact of the highest Quality (IQ) with FIRST-rate faculty, 6 Executive Summary who are Forward-looking and frontiering, Innovative and impacting through excellence in Research, Service and Teaching. To achieve this goal, the School must recruit excellent and visionary faculty and staff, in the face of the enormous challenges in offering competitive salaries. We plan to pursue strategic “target of excellence” (TOE) hires and recruit eminent scholars who are of the caliber of national academy members. Senior leadership is a critical requirement for starting new programs, and we will strive to attract renowned candidates to ensure our success in our target areas of excellence (see page 5). In the past year, we were successful in recruiting a senior leader in computer security, Professor Martin Abadi, under the TOE program. TOE hires are critical for establishing key strategic areas such as nanotechnology, biomolecular engineering, and information systems and technology management. The School of Engineering is committed to building interdisciplinary programs across divisional boundaries, linking to other divisions and colleges at UCSC and UCSC Extension. We envision campus-wide benefits as the joint research collaborations grow. In particular, we plan to develop and offer joint degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with departments in the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Arts divisions.     Nov. 9, 2018 April 26, 2019 Students Lopez and Garcia receive big scholarship boost for UC plans It was my privilege over the past week to share life-changing scholarship news with two outstanding members of Hartnell’s Class of 2019 – Maria Yeni Lopez Escobar and Bobbie Joe Garcia, both of whom received two-year $20,000 scholarships. Lopez, a native of El Salvador and a 2016 graduate of Salinas High School, learned April 25 that she will receive the Karl S. Pister Leadership Opportunity Award to attend the University of California, Santa Cruz. She plans to study psychology. The Pister scholarship goes to students who have overcome adverse socioeconomic circumstances, have a demonstrated commitment to assisting and improving the lives of others, and have financial aid eligibility. Lopez, who said she’s especially appreciative of help she has received through the Academy for College Excellence program at Hartnell, aspires to become a counselor. “I would like to be the person who helps others, in return for the help I received,” she said. On April 29, I was again joined by colleagues to share a scholarship announcement with Bobbie Joe Garcia, the 2016 valedictorian at Greenfield High School. Garcia will use her two-year, $20,000 scholarship from the Peggy and Jack Baskin Foundation at either UC Berkeley or UC Santa Cruz, both of which have accepted her for admission. page 1 In addition to her studies, Garcia has worked on campus as a Supplemental Instruction Leader and as an intern working with Hartnell and Stanford University students on the Salinas History Project, as well as for MILPA, a leadership and infrastructure development organization in Salinas.

    CELEBRATING THE HUMANITIES 2016-2017 Academic Year 02 LETTER FROM THE DEAN TYLER STOVALL 2016-2017 will be a year for the books. We’ve seen a bitterly fought presidential campaign followed by some of the largest demonstrations in American history and continued mobilization on both sides of the political spectrum. Mother Nature has also been in a feisty mood, bringing one of the rainiest winters in recent memory to Northern California. These various kinds of Sturm und Drang have challenged and motivated members of the Humanities at UC Santa Cruz, illustrating the importance of our perspectives on the various cultural and political crises of the day. Through the noise of the national rhetoric, we recognize our responsibility and role: We present facts, not just as stand-alone claims, but also in the context of a greater worldview. We tell stories, not only for the pure satisfaction of a beautiful narrative, but because we recognize the importance of preserving truth and adding perspective. We think deeply about how things should be done, rather than simply accepting the status quo. We challenge convention when it prevents equity and progress. The Humanities—the study of literature, history, philosophy, language, and more—is critically important in today’s global society. Here at UC Santa Cruz, we are committed to excellence in research, scholarship, and teaching students from across all disciplines. I am happy to report that it has been a successful year for the Division.
