Vice Chancellor for University Relations University of California, Santa Cruz Position Description The Organization University of California, Santa Cruz Since its establishment in 1965, the University of California, Santa Cruz has been dedicated to excellence in undergraduate education, graduate studies, and research. In just over 48 years, UC Santa Cruz has earned national and international recognition for quality research and world-class teaching. The campus has a current enrollment of over 17,000 students and an alumni base of more than 85,000. Undergraduates pursue coursework in 61 majors, and graduate students earn graduate certificates, master’s degrees, and Ph.D. degrees in 32 academic fields. The campus has innovative and world class programs in many academic areas, including art and culture, astronomy, bioinformatics, computer gaming, digital arts, economics, engineering, environmental studies, feminist studies, food systems, genomics, linguistics, ocean sciences, physics and robotics. UCSC is also innovative and distinguished through its division into ten residential colleges, which contribute significantly to the undergraduate student experience and the teaching of core UCSC values of interdisciplinary study and creative thinking across academic boundaries. Among examples of academic distinction, UCSC ranked at the very top—99.9th percentile—in research influence, and 11th overall among the top 100 universities in the world under the age of 50 in 2013, according to the New Times Education World University Rankings. In the annual Leiden Ranking, which measures the scientific performance of 500 major universities worldwide, UCSC placed 11th in the world this year. Additionally, UCSC's graduate programs in computer game design were ranked among the top 10 in the U.S. by the Princeton Review, and UCSC is listed among the top 10 greenest campuses in the country, according to the Sierra Club. UC Santa Cruz faculty include one National Medal of Science recipient, two of the University of California’s honored University Professors, 26 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 13 members of the National Academy of Sciences, two members of the Institute of Medicine, and 33 members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Recognition of outstanding research has resulted in steady increases in contracts, grants, and private funding across all five divisions. UCSC faculty and researchers have generated more than $100 million annually in external funding for seven consecutive years, totaling nearly $1 billion over 10 years. Furthering UCSC’s goal of growing our world-class programs, the Jack Baskin School of Engineering was established in 1997. It is the campus’ first professional school and focuses on engineering for the 21st century with strengths in biotechnology and bioinformatics, information technology, and nanotechnology. In addition to a 2000-acre main campus overlooking the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, UC Santa Cruz includes active research and teaching sites at the Long Marine Laboratory, home to the Seymour Marine Discovery Center and the Center for Ocean Health; a $330 million collaboration between UCSC and NASA; and the Monterey Bay Education, Science, and Technology Center (MBEST), situated on 1000 acres of the former Fort Ord in Monterey County. UC Santa Cruz also manages the University of California High-Performance AstroComputing Center and the University of California Observatories. Following a successful Cornerstone Campaign concluded in 2005, the campus will publicly launch in October, 2013 its first comprehensive campaign with a goal of $300 million. The University of California The University of California (UC) was chartered as the state’s only Land Grant College in 1868. The University system now includes ten campuses: Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz. All of the campuses adhere to high academic standards and the same admissions guidelines, yet each one has its own distinctive character. Among the campuses are five Medical Schools, four Law Schools, a School of Veterinary Medicine, as well as professional schools of Business Administration, Education, Engineering, Oceanography, and more. The UC Laboratory Management Office is responsible for managing contract administration and governance at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and for UC's obligations as an owner of Los Alamos National Security (LANS) and Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS). UC is a partner in LLNS, which manages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. UC is also a partner in LANS, which manages Los Alamos National Laboratory. The UC libraries are among the finest in the world; the collection of more than 100 University of California libraries are surpassed in size on the American continent only by the Library of Congress collection. University Relations Division University Relations (UR) builds enduring relationships, resources, and understanding that enable UC Santa Cruz to provide educational opportunities, create knowledge and transform lives. UR works closely with internal and external constituencies of the campus, including trustees of the UC Santa Cruz Foundation, the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Council, and other support groups of the University. Comprised of five units, UR provides leadership, strategic planning, and central services in the areas of alumni relations and outreach, fundraising, news media relations, marketing and branding, publications (both electronic and print), campus Web development, public events, and government and community relations. In addition, UR provides support for the UC Santa Cruz Foundation and the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Association, both of which are separately incorporated non-profit organizations within the state of California. Responsibilities Reporting to the Chancellor and the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor, University Relations (VCUR) provides leadership for communications, reputation-building, constituent engagement and fundraising activities of UC Santa Cruz. The Vice Chancellor serves as a key spokesperson for the University to more than 85,000 alumni; to local, regional, state, and national constituencies; and to the University of California Office of the President. The Vice Chancellor will expand and advance the strategic plan to promote UCSC’s vision and reputation, and to publicize its achievements at the state and national levels. S/he provides counsel on the advancement of the campus to the Chancellor and other senior level administrators. The Vice Chancellor is responsible for ensuring that the University Relations division functions on the level needed to support a major public research university, and to generate the necessary support for the campus priorities. S/he provides leadership and strategic planning for all University Relations programs, with operational responsibility for leading and coordinating the offices of strategic philanthropy, constituent engagement and alumni relations, public affairs, special events, community and governmental relations, and University Relations administration, finance, and information systems. The University Relations division is supported by a staff of approximately 100 people including the following direct reports to the Vice Chancellor: . Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Philanthropy; . Assistant Vice Chancellor for Constituent Engagement; . Assistant Vice Chancellor for Operations and Planning; . Director of Marketing and Communications; . Director of Public Affairs; . Director, Government and Community Relations; . Executive Communications Coordinator; . Special Assistant to the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor University Relations. The Division of University Relations is launching the campus’ first comprehensive campaign in the fall of 2013 and anticipates raising $30-$50 million in campaign commitments annually over the next four years. The Vice Chancellor will work closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Strategic Philanthropy to provide leadership and planning for the campaign. The incumbent will manage a personal portfolio of major prospects. Current Opportunities The next Vice Chancellor for University Relations will have the opportunity to make an impact in several important areas: • Leading the University in its effort to successfully complete its first University-wide comprehensive campaign. The campaign is currently making the transition from the silent phase to the public phase and has a goal of raising $300 million. • Developing relationships and establishing UC Santa Cruz as a prominent partner with business leaders and corporations in Silicon Valley. • Creating a strategy for increasing the participation and engagement of the University’s alumni. Given the age of the University, and the relative youth of its alumni base, the new Vice Chancellor for University Relations will have ample opportunity to define the role of alumni in the future success of the University and its development efforts. • Position the campus as a leading research university on the national and international stage based on the impact of its work, with an extraordinary commitment to undergraduate education.
