PREMIER LEAGUE Slick United show some razzle-dazzle against Newcastle

Reuters Newcastle hold London anchester United finally produced a swashbuckling display worthy of Mtheir great name in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Newcastle United on Tuesday, former Old Traff ord favourites Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand said. “Boring, boring United” suddenly became “scoring, scoring, United” as Louis van Gaal’s men threw caution to the wind in a Rooney-inspired game being hailed as one of the best Pre- mier League matches of the season. Surrounding Wayne Rooney with young, energetic forwards could be the key that unlocks a complete turnaround in United’s fortunes, according to Ferdinand. Rooney was like a firecracker up front, producing a dynamic performance that could have yielded a bucketful of goals for him and his team. NFL Panthers pleased with growth of ‘little brother’ Funchess ‘It doesn’t matter if I’m a rookie or a 10-year vet. I’m going to do what I want to do’

By Jonathan Jones The Charlotte Observer

hroughout the NFL sea- son the league has told you through advertise- ment after advertise- Tment that “football is family.” If that’s so, then there’s no doubt Panthers rookie receiver Devin Funchess is the little brother on the off ense. At 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds, he’s a big little brother, but a lit- tle brother, nonetheless. Funchess is the one who gets playful ribbing from quarterback Cam Newton in news conferenc- es and in the locker room. He’s the one everyone has watched grow from organized team activities and adjusting to the speed of the game to learning how to better play the receiver position in the NFL. He also has the classic little brother syndrome of not want- ing to act like the little brother. “I’ve never really understood,” Funchess said, “just like when I came in as a freshman (at Michi- gan), ‘Oh you’ve got to do that because you’re a freshman.’ It doesn’t matter if I’m a rookie or a 10-year vet. I’m going to do what I want to do.” This season, Funchess bat- tled through a hamstring injury in training camp that stunted his growth when — after second- year receiver Kelvin Benjamin was lost for the season with a knee injury — the Panthers needed him more. He struggled with dropped passes through the fi rst half of the season but learned to calm down, trust his hands more and better use his large frame against smaller defensive backs. The result has been 31 catches for 473 yards, the fi fth-most for a Panthers’ rookie receiver. De Villiers, 31, admitted: “Every now and then I find I am not enjoying myself as much as I should be. I’ve been talking to a few people and obviously that’s leaked.” De Villiers was speaking ahead of the third Test against England which starts at the Wanderers Stadium today—the first time he has spoken directly to journalists since an article appeared in a local newspaper claiming he was thinking of quitting. “I’m still very committed to the job,” he said. “The two Test matches now is all that I am focusing on. There’s a nice big break of six months before we play Test cricket again. Lots of things can happen before then. But for now I am as committed as I can be and very hungry to make a success of these two Test matches.” De Villiers acknowledged that big-money Twenty20 tournaments around the world were tempting for Bailey celebrates his century on Tuesday after being reprieved off players. the first ball he faced because of the absence of the Decision Review “I think it’s a going concern for the ICC (International System due to India’s opposition.
