The last re- vamp took place in 1993, after the Center for Air Force History took over production. Gus Bell was the architect of that design, and its longevity is a tribute to how well he did it. Our third article is a posthumous article by Richard K.

Design Notes Panzer Campaigns: France ‘40 By David Guégan From History to Creating the Game Since the introduction of the first Panzer Campaigns Series game in 1999, Smolensk '41, the debate and speculation upon future game titles amongst our loyal patrons grew not only in its depth of the recreated battlefield but also its breadth. The title, Sedan ’40, was frequently suggested, but the responses on the forums were usually "too big, too many units, or not enough information." When HPS Simulations produced Kursk ’43, I knew the Panzer Campaigns Series had the breadth and the title was broadened to France ’40. So, how did I get it started? I have been a player of the Panzer Campaigns Series since 2000. Being French, I have always wanted to see the 1940 France Campaign recreated. I decided to contact John Tiller in late 2003 and ask him if he would be interested. After a few e-mails exchanges, I was able to convince him with my knowledge, research on the battles that took place and the Order of Battle for the French and Belgians I had compiled, we could recreate the Battle of France in the breadth and depth it deserved. The project is organised in five parts and covers the newspapers in chronological sequence. Part 1 provides full coverage for 1939; Part 2: 1940; Part 3: 1941; Part 4: 1942-1943; and finally, Part 5 covers 1944-1945. At last social historians and students of journalism can consult complete war-time runs of Britain’s popular newspapers in their libraries. Less august than the papers of record, it is these papers which reveal most about the impact of the war on the home front, the way in which people amused themselves in the face of adversity, and the way in which public morale was kept high through a mixture of propaganda and judicious reporting. Most importantly, it is through these papers that we can see how most ordinary people received news of the war. For, with a combined circulation of over 23 million by 1948, and a secondary readership far in excess of these figures, the News of the World, The People, the Daily Express, The Daily Mirror, and the Sunday Express reached into the homes of the majority of the British public and played a critical role in shaping public perceptions of the war.

Rather than acknowledging the newly developed third dimension of warfare, most historians attempt to place air power in the traditional debate between a Continental commitment and a strong navy. By examining the development of the Royal Air Force in the interwar years, this thesis will show that air power was extremely influential in developing Britain’s grand strategy. Moreover, this thesis will study the Royal Air Force’s reliance on strategic bombing to consider any legal or moral issues. Finally, this thesis will explore British air defenses in the 1930s as well as the first major air battle in World War II, the Battle of Britain, to see if the Royal Air Force’s almost uncompromising faith in strategic bombing was warranted.
