Inspiring, Insightful ReadBy Denise A. BarkerJust read this little book and am saddened to learn that the author passed away in 2008. His was a brilliant mind. I loved how he stripped away the writing "add-ons" and left us with the seven main parts of the story. His comparison of a critic to a reader was wonderful. I enjoyed his essay on writer's block, how we should go back to the idea for our story or even further back to our definition of what constitutes writing and what is an author. Very insightful. Plus he reiterates how the manuscript is NOT the story. How valid this point is in this day of the e-book. But his point was that the manuscript was just a transfer mechanism, getting the story in our mind to our readers' minds. So the manuscript is subject to change to get the storytelling across in the best manner possible. I'll be rereading this gem often.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Thank you for bringing the book back into print.By A. HughesI had a bunch of copies that I gave people over the years, then the book went out of print and used copies became outrageously expensive. This is the book that shows the simple structure of any story. I've bought many books on writing over the years, this is one of two that I always hand to people. The other is _The Weekend Novelist_ by Robert J. Ray, the first edition, not the second. Luckily it is still available at a low price used. A Must for WritersBy Josh HillAn amazing insight to writing strong, solid stories that will sell, from someone who made a career out of doing so. The author is a legendary teacher. The book taught me so much about how story structure and character weave and work together in so short a span, the first five chapters alone are worth the price.I recommend this short, powerful text to anyone interested in learning how to craft books and stories that sell. I re-read it every few weeks just to have the ideas fresh in my mind. Brilliant. The classic work of writing instruction back in print!
