LTD BRG 18 Preliminary Inventory __________________________________________________________________ Edward Woods (1837-1913) arrived in South Australia during 1860 and began working for the architect Edmund Wright. He helped design the GPO and Town Hall before starting out on his own in 1869; his first commission being St. Peter's Cathedral. By 1884, he had been appointed the colony's Architect-in-chief, and was an inaugural member of the S.A. Institute of Architects formed in 1886. Walter Bagot (1880-1963), a grandson of Henry Ayers and a student of St. Peter's College, became articled to Woods in 1899. He later studied architecture in London before entering into partnership with Woods in 1905. The following year, Bagot assisted with the formation of the first school of architecture in Adelaide, under the auspices of the School of Mines. Herbert Jory, James Irwin and Louis Laybourne-Smith joined the practice as partners in ensuing years; Laybourne-Smith (1880-1965) was also Head of the School of Architecture for 40 years and instrumental in its foundation. Woods Bagot have been a very influential in South Australia, with early emphasis on traditional styles and in ecclesiastical architecture. The firm designed Elder House, the Trustee Building, Bonython Hall, Barr Smith Library, the War Memorial, Carrick Hill and a number of churches in Adelaide and the country. Later commissions included John Martins, the Bank of NSW, CML and Da Costa Buildings, ANZ Bank and the Elizabeth City Centre, while more recent examples include Standard Chartered, Commonwealth Bank, Telecom and Mutual Health buildings. -

STATEMENT OF HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE The Rosetta Head Well and Whaling Station Site is on the lands and waters of the Ramindjeri people of the lower Fleurieu Peninsula, who are a part of the Ngarrindjeri Nation. The site represents a once significant early industry that no longer exists in South Australia. Founded by the South Australian Company in 1837 and continually operating until 1851, it was the longest-running whaling station in the State. It played an important role in the establishment of the whaling industry in South Australia as a prototype for other whaling stations and made a notable contribution to the fledgling colony’s economic development. The Rosetta Head Whaling Station is also an important contact site between European colonists and the Ramindjeri people. To Ramindjeri people, the whale is known as Kondli (a spiritual being), and due to their connection and knowledge, a number of Ramindjeri were employed at the station as labourers and boat crews. Therefore, Rosetta Head is one of the first places in South Australia where European and Aboriginal people worked side by side. -

Date: 13 February 2009 Copyright © 2009 Stellenbosch University All rights reserved ii ABSTRACT There is a growing appreciation of the importance of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and the role they play in the socio-economic wellbeing of rural communities and other stakeholders. Harvest systems to ensure sustainable harvesting are largely still lacking and overutilisation is of growing concern worldwide. In this study the science needed to underwrite management for sustainable use of NTFPs was explored. This was done using case studies of three different products harvested from natural forest in the southern Cape, South Africa viz. fern (Rumohra adiantiformis) fronds (leaves) as greenery in the florist industry, medicinal tree bark, and the corm (stem) of the geophyte Bulbine latifolia for medicinal use. The research approach enabled insight into the complexities of developing harvest systems for NTFPs, the input and expertise required to conduct applied research, and the variation in approach required for different products and plant growth forms. -

Tasmania . 170 Chapter 1: Introduction In Australia there are four Catholic cathedrals designed in the Romanesque style (Canberra, Newcastle, Port Pirie and Geraldton) and one Anglican cathedral (Parramatta). These buildings are significant in their local communities, but the numbers of people who visit them each year are minuscule when compared with the numbers visiting Australia's most famous Romanesque building, the large Sydney retail complex known as the Queen Victoria Building. God and Mammon, and the Romanesque serves them both. Do those who come to pray in the cathedrals, and those who come to shop in the galleries of the QVB, take much notice of the architecture? Probably not, and yet the Romanesque is a style of considerable character, with a history stretching back to Antiquity. It was never extensively used in Australia, but there are nonetheless hundreds of buildings in the Romanesque style still standing in Australia's towns and cities. Perhaps it is time to start looking more closely at these buildings? They will not disappoint. The heyday of the Australian Romanesque occurred in the fifty years between 1890 and 1940, and it was largely a brick-based style. As it happens, those years also marked the zenith of craft brickwork in Australia, because it was only in the late nineteenth century that Australia began to produce high-quality, durable bricks in a wide range of colours. -

Box FM730, Famona, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe Vegetation Survey of Mt Gorongosa, page 2 SUMMARY Mount Gorongosa is a large inselberg almost 700 sq. km in extent in central Mozambique. With a vertical relief of between 900 and 1400 m above the surrounding plain, the highest point is at 1863 m. The mountain consists of a Lower Zone (mainly below 1100 m altitude) containing settlements and over which the natural vegetation cover has been strongly modified by people, and an Upper Zone in which much of the natural vegetation is still well preserved. Both zones are very important to the hydrology of surrounding areas. Immediately adjacent to the mountain lies Gorongosa National Park, one of Mozambique's main conservation areas. A key issue in recent years has been whether and how to incorporate the upper parts of Mount Gorongosa above 700 m altitude into the existing National Park, which is primarily lowland. [These areas were eventually incorporated into the National Park in 2010.] In recent years the unique biodiversity and scenic beauty of Mount Gorongosa have come under severe threat from the destruction of natural vegetation. This is particularly acute as regards moist evergreen forest, the loss of which has accelerated to alarming proportions. -

Introduction Australia is a country rich in minerals and land. According to the Department of Foreign Af- fairs and Trade (DFAT) (2010), Australia’s major merchandise exports in 2010 were minerals (30.1%), fuels (28.8%), gold (6.2%), and processed and unprocessed food (10.6%; the figures in parentheses are shares in total export value). This trade structure is the reason Australia is often called a ‘lucky state’. However, manufactured goods composed 14.7% of total merchandise export value, and elaborately transformed manufactures, such as pharmaceutical products, machinery for specialised industries, and road motor vehicles and parts, composed more than 60% of the total manufactured goods export value. Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia with population of 1.2 million, traditionally has a strong manufacturing sector. The 2006 Census showed that its em- ployment rate in the manufacturing sector was the highest of all capital cities at 15%. However, the reduction of tariffs on imported goods has exposed the manufacturing industries in Adelaide to severe international competition,1) and led to the reduction or discontinuation of pro- duction. Recently, the strong Australian dollar has further challenged manufacturing companies (hereafter, we denote the Australian dollar (or A$) simply as the dollar (or $) unless special men- tion is needed). According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) (2011), ‘South Australia’s manufacturing industry showed negative growth in both employment and production between 2000 −01 and 2009−10’. -

Stephen Legg Introduction he origins of the notion that forests could attract rain date back to classical antiquity (Glacken T1967), but in the mid-Nineteenth century the idea became elevated almost to an article of faith among many European scientists in the fields of agriculture, botany and forestry. They were imbued with a new-found appreciation developed during the late-Eighteenth and early-Nineteenth centuries that the Earth was old yet dynamic and that environments, including climate, could change – both naturally and through human agency. The debate on the climatic influence of forests quickly spread to the New World, first in North America and later throughout Australasia particularly with the advance of the agricultural frontier and its attendant assault on the forests. Initially the focus was on the consequences of large-scale removal of trees in heavily-timbered arable lands. Later, attention turned to the possibilities of ‘climate making’ through afforestation both to redress deforestation and to extend the supposed climatic benefit of trees to grasslands. The latter seemed especially important in drought-prone Australia. More than just another scientific controversy or a commentary on contemporary environmental destruction, the notion that trees directly influenced climate also became a familiar historiographical trope in literature as diverse as history, geography and travel- writing to help explain the rise and fall of some civilizations in now arid lands in the Old World. The fledgling sciences of climatology, forestry, and ecology provided further legitimacy in the 1860s to what has been termed an ‘awakening to forest conservation’ through which the various values of forests were considerably prioritised in public policy agendas. -
