By the time I publish the Windword we will have about 2 weeks of 2020 left. As we get ready for 2021 there are so many questions to be answered. Are going to wear masks for the rest of our lives? Will business’s keep curb services? Do you think we will ever to be able to shake hands, give pats on the back, hug each other or even have food and drink in groups. like we have done for the most of our lives? Only the government, Board of Governors and the Activities Captain will know for sure. As we know we are deep into the holiday season. To marketing groups, this starts on Halloween, goes on to Thanksgiving, when we now get to December. December can be crazy, we start with Hannukah, go right into Christmas, Boxing Day and Kwanzaa. I used some humor of these holidays in the comics. Hannukah and Christmas were easy. After all if Adam Sandler can make a movie and write a song about Hannukah that opens all kind of doors. They are time tested holidays that I found thousand of jokes but Kwanzaa was tough. It is relative new and we are getting to recognize the fes- tival more. All of which keeps humor sparce and what is out there can be not very nice. I tried to be a little PC in making the choices I made, but if I offend I am sorry. Best of the Holidays to you and yours. WSC History – Windycrest Road Originally named Gretchen Road, Crest Road was a short road into the Woodlake Acres Subdivision. It stopped at a cattle guard that used to be at the point in the road that is now Mike & Maggie Cho- quette & Bruce Hurst west property line. Beyond the cattle guard was the gravel & dirt road to Windycrest Sailing Club. There was nothing besides oil wells along the road. Windycrest maintained the road buying gravel and hiring contractors with graders to the road and work the ditches spreading the gravel. This process happened yearly or at least every other year depending upon prior rains and runoff. This maintenance work and mate- rials cost Windycrest about $2,500 each time. Then about 2001 Mike Lang took on the project of getting the landowners along and who owned the property Windycrest Road crossed over to deed the land under the road to Osage County. He was successful and Osage County Commissioners passed a resolution to acquire Windy Crest Road. The road name change came when the resolution passed and because someone in Green Country Subdivision made a sign for the road and did not know or understand Windycrest is all one word. Osage County initially did a chip and seal surface over the years of gravel and it was nice to not have dust all over our cars and boats. We enjoyed the new surface for many years, but Osage County being a large county with rural population the taxes that pay to maintain the road are not very much and it has fallen into rough condition. A few years ago Windycrest BOG spoke with our County Commissioner and he spoke with the County District Attorney about the possibility of an agreement with Osage County for Windycrest to pay for the materials and Osage County to pay for the equipment and labor to put down a new chip and seal surface on the road. This year we circled back to the agreement and the WSC BOG agreed to pay for the materials. Now Osage County is putting down several tons of patch at their cost, and once prepared they will chip and seal the surface. We will try to keep everyone informed when work will be in pro- cess to minimize the traffic and any oil getting on vehicles.

Every year, a regatta is held in Alice Springs, Australia. Due to the lack of water in Central Australia, contestants have to carry bottomless "boats" trough a dried-out riv- er. When the river did carry water in 1993, the regatta became "the only regatta ever cancelled because of wet weather".

Insiders Opinions : • Anyone can join in the fun; put your name down for numerous races.

• The real slogan is "the only regatta ever cancelled because there was water in the river"

• Never go near the river after dark. (Croc’s)

The big final boat battle is one of the most fun things you can do.

It's really an incredible display of rural Aussie culture. It's not just the 'boat' races, there's also a cross-country ski race, with teams of four attached to the same skis. And don't forget the 'budgy run' (budgy is a small bird) where men dress down to their 'budgy smugglers' (commonly known as whitey tighties in the US), stick a sack of chocolate gold coins in their crotch, and race each other without dropping the coins. It's truly an amazing event.

Minutes of Windycrest Board of Governors meeting of December 7, 2020

The meeting was called to order by the Commodore at 7:00 pm, December 7, 2020. In attendance were the following governors: Commodore David Hyman, Vice Commodore Lisa Weatherholt, Rear Commodore Maurice Casad, Treasurer Gary Worley, Past Commodore Skeeter Chilton, Ac- tivities Chair Mark Hoagland and Fleet Captain Dan Jarrett. Also in attendance was Webmaster Carmen Skelton.

The minutes of the November 2, 2020 Board of Governors meeting were approved.

Officer’s Reports were presented as follows:

Treasurer’s Report - Treasurer Gary Worley presented the financial report for the prior month, and the report was approved by acclimation. A copy of the report is attached.

Vice Commodore’s Report - Vice Commodore Lisa Weatherholt informed the Board that the plans for a new retaining wall adjacent to B Dock are progressing and that firm plans and cost projection will be presented to the Board at its next meeting for consideration. She is working with the facili- ties manager, Chris Foster, to clean up the area surrounding the maintenance building and to re- cruit assistance from members, especially those who have yet to complete their 2020 work party. She also addressed the possibility of changes to the layout of Windycrest, and plans to compile amended regulations for Windyrest regarding the use of the facility and maintenance of trailers. She will work with Rear Commodore Maurice Casad on the Windyrest issues. She announced al- so that the club is soliciting proposals from contractors for the removal of a large dead tree in the Windyrest area. Lisa will continue to work with Greg Bledsoe in obtaining titles for the club to abandoned boats.

Rear Commodore’s Report - Rear Commodore Maurice Casad noted that training programs for the coming year will proceed as in the past, subject to safety requirements regarding Covid-19. He also will coordinate with Vice Commodore Lisa Weatherholt on Windyrest issues. He is also work- ing on plans for possible renovation to the bath house and/or the area surrounding it.

Past Commodore’s Report - Past Commodore Skeeter Chilton reported that Osage County has begun work on the resurfacing of Windycrest Road from the highway to the Windycrest gate and that the work will soon be completed subject to changing weather.

Activities Chairman’s Report - Activities Chairman Mark Hoagland reported that he has prepared a complete schedule of social activities for 2021, and that the events will proceed subject to safety requirements necessitated by Covid-19. Mark will keep the club members informed of activities that will take place. Mark has arranged for Windycrest to participate in the 2021 Tulsa Boat Show in February and will organize our activities for it. Mark and Vice Commodore Lisa Weatherholt will work on plans for membership recruitment in 2021 following on the successful 2020 in which we are fortunate to have gained many new members.

December Minutes Cont. Fleet Captain’s Report - Fleet Captain Dan Jarrett reported that he is planning a full season of racing subject to any changes or restrictions for safety caused by Covid-19. We will continue rac- ing on alternate weekends with all classes of boats sailing on the same days.

Commodore’s Report - Commodore David Hyman encouraged officers to form committees for or- ganizing and carrying out the many jobs necessary for the club’s operations. He observed that this will engage members more actively in the welfare of the club and will allow members to be- come more well acquainted with one another. He also reiterated that we will proceed with plans for all traditional activities and be prepared to change, postpone or cancel them as necessary for the safety of members. He reported that there is insufficient interest in rebuilding A Dock with slips now. However, he reported that there is substantial interest in replacing A Dock with another tie-up dock similar to the one on the South side of the launching ramp, one designed to accommo- date the installation of slip fingers later if there is demand for them. He reported that we will be having the electrical service on the docks inspected by an electrician with experience working with floating docks particularly in order to prevent any “stray electrical current” leaking into the water surrounding the docks. He also reported that a safety ladder will soon be placed on C Dock, and that one or two additional ones may be added. This is a purely safety measure for the benefit of people who have fallen into the lake from our docks and were unable to find a convenient way out of the water. He reported that he and the Treasurer are investigating new insurance arrange- ments for the club with the aim of obtaining appropriate insurance coverage at a lower cost.

Facilities Manager’s Report - Chris Foster, the facilities manager, provided a written report on the state of the club’s facilities for the Board. A copy of his report is available, just email the Commo- dore.

Webmaster’s Report - Webmaster Carmen Skelton reported that she is working on updating and improving the appearance and usefulness of our website.

There was no additional old business to consider. There was no new business presented.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

MC YEAR END REPORT It was a dark and stormy year……. but we made out like bandits. Other than having the Spring Series cancelled, it was a great year sailing wise. From mid-May through mid-October, the Windycrest MC fleet sailed every Wednesday and Sunday. I think we had about 3 lost days between no wind or blow outs. Otherwise it was sunny weather and 10 mph wind all year long. Another nice thing was that we did not suffer any high water. That was a big plus af- ter the summer of 2019. There were many MC regattas that were can- celled, changed to one day events, or had limited entries. A few of us slipped away to race elsewhere now and then. We did have our MCSW Regatta with 16 boats. No food, no social, but it was nice to see all our friends. Sad thing to see A dock go. It was time. It had served its purpose, and lasted longer than expected. I’m sure we will think of something to tie up to when the wind comes from the north. Maybe move the motor- boat dock over. Maybe a new dock that can add slips as needed. We’ll see. We have a great Board of Governors in place that will do the right things as time rolls forward. As we move to 2021, let’s all keep up our Windycrest Spirit—-a friendly, helpful, responsible can do attitude.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Your MC Scow Fleet

As we come into the winter days, this is a great time to check with sail- ors in your fleets and develop some like boat camaraderie. You don’t have to race to be a fleet, I am not sure you have to have a boat. Such as the associates. One of the great things about fleets is that they are a group of folks that can join together, help plan for events, and volunteer for all kind of Club activities. I know the MC’s are active, the Sunfishes are growing. The Catalina’s are like the rest of us, waiting for COVID-19 to go away because we know they like to party.

To steal and butcher a quote from President John F. Kennedy “Ask not what your Club can do for You! “Ask what can you do for your Club!”

From Molly Richardson, Associate Member Windycrest Sailing Club Tulsa-based organization Global Gardens held their Fall Staff Retreat at Windycrest, where they enjoyed using the pavilion as a safe, outdoor space for team-building ac- tivities and planning workshops for 2021. Global Gardens teaches science and peace education through gardening in Tulsa public schools and give students a "seed-to- plate" experience each year, where they plant, tend, har- vest, cook, and eat what they grow in the gardens. The staff thought Windycrest was so beautiful, peaceful, and inspiring - and were incredibly grateful to be allowed to use the club. Many of them were curious about sailing and would like to return!
