International Student Support International students are offered English language learning courses at no additional cost to the students. Courses meet every day for 53 minutes per day. Students are also enrolled in an additional English language learning course called Cultural Communication during the first year of enrollment. This teaches students the cultural nuances of English in America. During the second year of enrollment, international students take a course that enhances their critical thinking and speech. For juniors and seniors, an independent study is made available to international students. Many students take this opportunity to focus on English language skills, SAT or ACT test-taking skills or any other skills they need to improve on individually. For their senior year, many international students enroll in a beginning debate course, which helps students master English by framing and supporting an argument. During that week, students and teachers planned lessons and taught English to students in grades two through six. Past trips included those that went to Australia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan and Costa Rica. College Trips for International Students The Barstow School brings international students on a week-long trip to a city in the United States at no extra charge to explore colleges in the area. Students also go sight-seeing in a new city in the United States. The first college trip took students to Chicago. Students toured Northwestern University, DePaul University and the University of Chicago. The college trip travels to a different location in the U.S. each year. Debate Team International students are enrolled in beginning debate courses in their junior and senior years. This helps English language acquisition by teaching students how to frame and support an argument. The Debate team at Barstow, directed by Ms. Linda Collier, improves students’ communication skills and confidence. Students compete in tournaments where teams of students advocate for and against a resolution that calls for change in a particular U.S. policy. Students are then reviewed by judges who decide which debater “won” a debate. In 2012, Barstow’s debate team won a total of 50 Debate tournament awards, including 11 first place trophies. The program consists primarily of the following three components: Traditional In this component, the program awards college scholarships of $5,000 to $10,000 per year to students in 11th grade. Adult Learner In this component, the program provides college scholarships of $5,000 per year for learners aged 24 or older who have accumulated at least 12 college credits and have not earned a bachelor’s degree. Applicants with an associate’s degree are eligible to apply. College Savings In this component, the program offers two different college-savings tracks. In the seeded accounts, KC Scholars contributes to a tax-free 529 college savings plan for high school freshmen awardees. For 50 of those awardees, the program also matches any additional student savings at a rate of 4:1, up to $5,000, with up to an additional $2,000 for students in this group of 50 who throughout their subsequent high school years achieve college preparation milestones. The awards for these 50 students are referred to as matched accounts.
