His 28-year career includes coaching at Pepperdine, Fresno Jamil Al-Agba (USC) State and Long Beach State. Once at Troy, Smith extended his streak of sending teams to Fredrik Bergh (Fresno State) the NCAA Tournament to 12 consecutive seasons, as the Trojans reached the NCAA Second Robert Farah (USC) Round in his first season, the semifinals in 2004 and the second round again in 2005. Al Garland (Pepperdine) In 2006, USC missed the postseason with an 8-14 record. In 2007, USC reemerged on the Fredrik Giers (Fresno State) NCAA scene, racking up its best program start since 1987 with an 11-0 record on the way to Emilio Gomez (USC) a second-place finish in the Pac-10 (6-1) and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals to finish 23-3 Sebastien Graeff (Pepperdine) overall. It was the biggest turnaround in USC history, and marked the fewest losses sustained Kelly Gullett (Fresno State & Pepperdine) since USC went 22-3 in 1994, when the Trojans won their 15th NCAA title. Smith was named Yannick Hanfmann (USC) the Pac-10 Coach of the Year and ITA West Region Coach of the Year in 2007. Stefan Sutter (Pepperdine) Smith spent six seasons (1992-97) as head coach at Fresno State, transforming the Bulldogs Kaes Van’t Hof (USC) into a top-20 program. His record there was 102-57 (.642) as he led Fresno State to its first- Laurens Verboven (USC) ever NCAA tourney in 1994 and coached the program’s first-ever All-American (Fredrik Bergh) Jonny Wang (USC) in 1995. In all, he guided the Bulldogs into the NCAAs in his last four seasons. Smith enjoyed his greatest success at Fresno State in 1996 when the team won its first Western Athletic Conference title, posted a 23-5 record (the best in school history) and earned its third straight NCAA berth with a No. 6 national ranking. That season, he was named ITA Region VII and WAC Coach of the Year. Smith was the only men’s coach to take two different schools to the NCAA quarterfinals in the 1990s (Fresno State in 1996 and Pepperdine in 1998). Additionally, Smith was the only men’s coach whose teams did not lose a match in NCAA regional play (under the previous format). Smith, 52, earned a bachelor’s in liberal studies (while coaching the men’s tennis team) from Long Beach State in 1987 and was a four-year letter winner for the 49ers. After playing professionally for 15 months and competing at the U.S. Open and Wimbledon, Smith returned to Long Beach State and became the youngest Division I men’s tennis head coach at age 23. He served as the 49ers’ head coach for four years (1988-91), compiling an overall record of 50-47 (.515). Smith and his wife, Tammie, have three sons, Tanner, Riley and Colter. MARKS TENNIS STADIUM The USC men’s and women’s tennis teams have called the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium home since its construction in Marks Stadium 1971. This season, Trojan tennis sees its home revamped and renovated, bringing the venue up to date and in line with the impressive accomplishments of both programs. USC broke ground on the new Buntmann Family Tennis Center on Feb. 24, 2015, starting an impressive renovation project with the goal of elevating Marks Tennis Stadium to be on par with the best facilities in the country by creating an inviting, elegant, bright and safe training and competition environment. The Buntmann Family Tennis Center entrance and lobby now welcomes fans and visitors and puts on display the rich history of USC tennis. To improve the building functionality and support the tennis program operations, the new Lisa and Douglas Goldman Family Student-Athlete Learning Studio supports direct collaboration between coaches, staff and athletes on a daily basis. The teams are now able to utilize and enjoy brand-new suites with lockers, showers, team meeting rooms and lounges. Both teams also have access to a new training room, a stringing storage area and a large multi-purpose room. To better accommodate and enhance the spectator experience, new spectator shade canopies has been added, a new elevator to the seating area has been installed. In addition to the lead gift from the Buntmann family, the renovation was made possible thanks to financial support from the Lisa and Douglas Gold- man family, the Fritz. B Burns Foundation, John Shea and Michael Uytengsu. The Buntmann Family Tennis Center is just the latest of a string of improvements made at Marks Stadium. During winter of 2006, a sixth court was added to the main stadium, allowing for dual-match competition to be played out entirely in front of fans within the 1,000-seat venue. A new and much-anticipated addition was made in May 2005 with the installation of a $300,000 LED Daktronic interactive scoreboard, emblazoned with a list of all national championships won by the USC men’s and women’s tennis programs. Fans can now follow each match point-for-point from their stadium seat and online at usctrojans.com. The stadium also underwent renovations during the summer of 2002. Seven hundred chair-back seats were added to replace the bleachers on the baselines and the courts were all repainted and lined. Two of the courts are named after famous USC alumni and Wimbledon singles champions, and . The center court is named for USC’s 13 doubles champions — , , , Murphy Jensen, , , , Olmedo, , , Raul Ramirez, Ted Schroeder and Smith. Plaques honoring Trojan legends Dick Leach and George Toley also adorn the entrance of Marks Stadium. The stadium was dedicated in 1973 when former Trojan stars Alex Olmedo, Stan Smith, Dennis Ralston and Bob Lutz held a tennis exhibition. The 1974 men’s NCAA Tournament was held at Marks Stadium (USC finished second).
