The list contains all species described through 31 December 1993, and those new species names made available in previous pages of this volume. The most species rich genus is Streptocephalus with 58 described species level taxa. Chirocephalus with 43, Branchinecta 35, and Branchinella 33 occupy the next three places. With the exception of Branchipodopsis and Eubranchipus each having 16 species, all the other genera include less than 10 species each. The need for zoogeographic study of these animals is demonstrated by the fact that almost 25% of the named taxa are known only from their type localities. Fairy Shrimp Populations of Northeastern Ohio in the Seasons of 1945 and 1946
FAIRY SHRIMP POPULATIONS OF NORTHEASTERN OHIO IN THE SEASONS OF 1945 AND 1946 RALPH W. DEXTER, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, AND CHARLES H. KUEHNLE, Lincoln High School, Canton, Ohio Throughout the late winter and spring of the years 1945 and 1946, field studies on anostracan phyllopods (fairy shrimps) were continued in Portage, Summit, Stark, and Crawford Counties of northeastern Ohio. Reports on this work for the years 1941-1944 inclusive have already been published (Dexter and Sheary, 1943; Dexter, 1943 and 1946). This paper presents the observations on seasonal and geographical distribution of fairy shrimps from a study of more than eighty pools and ponds during the fifth and sixth years of an annual survey, including a week by week life history study in two ponds throughout the entire fairy shrimp season, together with new information on ecological relationships of this group of sporadic crustaceans. Also, there is added a compilation of collecting records of the Anostraca from other sections of Ohio. Acknowledgment is made to those who have kindly contributed specimens and records to this study. Their names are given in the paper in connection with their specific contributions. We are indebted to Dr. Folke Linder of Uppsala, Sweden, and to Dr. Edwin P. Creaser for service rendered in settling certain tax- onomic problems. We thank Dr. Kenneth L. Where connecting links between modern animals cannot be known, we must invent them ; at least, if evolution is true, we can feel sure that connecting links really did exist. -

Records of Anostracan Phyllopods in Northeastern Ohio
RECORDS OF ANOSTRACAN PHYLLOPODS IN NORTHEASTERN OHIO RALPH W. DEXTER AND LESLIE E. SHEARY Kent State University Records of anostracan phyllopods (fairy shrimps) in Ohio and adjoining regions are not very plentiful. Chambers (1874) reported Eubranchipus vernalis from a temporary pool near Covington, Kentucky, a few miles from Cincinnati. Hunt (1882) listed E. stagnalis for the Cincinnati region. Garman (1924) described E. neglectus from Kentucky. Baker and Rosof (1927-1928), who studied spermato- genesis in fairy shrimps, collected their specimens of E. vernalis in the Columbus region.1 Ward (1940) reported E. vernalis from several pools near Cincinnati during the spring of 1938. No published accounts of anostracan phyllopods are known to the writers for northeastern Ohio. For older records in the known distribution of Anostraca, consult Packard (1883), Johanson (1921, 1922) and Creaser (1930a). For recent records of these sporadic organisms in eastern North America, see Dexter and Ferguson (1943), The present paper is concerned with studies on the seasonal and geographic distribution of Eubranchipus vernalis (Verrill) in the northeastern section of Ohio. Preliminary field collections were made of the anostracan phyllopods in the vicinity of Akron, Ohio, during the late winter and spring of the years 1938-40. During the winter and spring of 1941 a restudy of the Akron area was undertaken with the addition of several new stations making a total of 17 in Summit County. Of these 17, six stations contained populations of E. vernalis. One of these ponds is known to have contained this species in 1936, 1938-1940. Two others are known to have had Eubranchipus vernalis in 1940. -
