Zdenka Ticharich was a Hungarian pianist, composer and celebrated beauty and artist’s muse who was the model for a number of artworks including a terracotta bust by Käthe Kollwitz. The composer Arthur Honegger described her as a “wonderful reincarnation of Nefertiti, with exceptional musical talent” and she was internationally acclaimed as the ideal of modern women. An entire book was dedicated to paintings and sculptures of her and includes the current lot by Matthew Smith.

The present work would appear to be a preparatory study for Spencer’s Cookham Regatta Series which included Punts Meeting (1953), Listening from Punts (1954) and Conversation between Punts (1955) along with the larger canvas Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta (unfinished 1954-1959). The smaller paintings from the series lack the religious content of Christ Preaching at Cookham Regatta as Spencer chose to concentrate on the wealthy day-trippers in their finery and to illustrate the class distinction between the punters and the local onlookers sitting on the river bank (Girls Listening and Punts by the River) 68

People we had seen or heard of before and very exciting to meet. Saw cricket through different eyes, surprised at all the work going into it, and amount of people who adore the game. West Indies next? Don’t think I could cope. Great to have captured such an historic event.’

The present owner’s grandmother owned Havelins Farm, Stourpaine together with a copy of a Christmas card from Gilbert Spencer in where Gilbert Spencer and other artists would attend musical evenings. which he refers to the painting in this lot (2) Henry Lamb had moved from his Hampstead studio to Stourpaine in 1918 and it was Lamb who invited Gilbert and Stanley Spencer to £3,000 - 5,000 visit him there. All were inspired by the surrounding countryside and €4,200 - 7,000 Stanley lived for a few years in nearby Durweston whilst Gilbert settled in Melbury. The current lot is likely to depict the area near Stourpaine.
