animal RightS in SaRa gRuen’S Water for Elephants: an Ecocriticism Study Evie Triana ABSTRACT Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen which released in 2007 tells about August, person in charge of the circus show; treat the animals’ circus in terrible way. The main concern of this study is to analyze the rights of animals’ circus by using Ecocriticism theory suggested by Cheryll B. Glotfelty. After analyzed the object, the writer found that the rights of animals’ circus were totally unfulfilled, and cause further problems such as humane euthanasia, the abuse of human power, industry of circus and many more. It also found that the ideology constructed to the story is how the human’s life was depends on the existence of animals. All of those findings are supported by the supporting data from Tamara L. Roleff (1999) which more concerned on the animal that Glotfelty mostly discuss about nature. Keywords: Abuse; Animal Rights; Circus; Ecocriticism. 1. Introduction One of major topic which had been discussed this time is the misapplication of treatment towards animals which made a pro and contrary side. By observing the case posed above, since 1970, people have been campaigning ‘Animal Rights’ to media in order to prevent the mistreatment to the animals. Most of people support this campaign, because they think that the existence of animals as occupant of the earth is as important as human. Moreover, many women are willing to be nude, battling for the animal life. Unfortunately, this huge action still could not prevent the animal abuse which happened in this era.

Spotlight on: Reading Group Guide Water for Elephants Author: Sara Gruen Born in Canada; married; children: three. Addresses: Name: Sara Gruen Home: P.O. Box 635, Chicago, IL 60606-635. E-mail: Born: Canada [email protected]. Occupation: Writer Address: P.O. Box 635, Career: Writer. Chicago, IL 60606-635 Writings: Riding Lessons (novel), HarperTorch (New York, NY), 2004. Works in Progress: Flying Changes, a sequel to Riding Lessons. Sidelights: Sara Gruen’s debut novel, Riding Lessons, concerns an Olympic-level rider named Annemarie Zimmer, who loses her prized horse and her promising career in a terrible accident. The incident proves to be the first link in a chain of events that culminates two decades later. At that point, Annemarie has lost her job, is in the midst of a divorce from her husband, and has discovered that her father is terminally ill. Taking her highly rebellious, teenaged daughter with her, she returns to her parents’ riding school in New Hampshire to regroup. There, she encounters a former love interest, Dan Garibaldi. She also finds a neglected horse with rare, brindled coloring; it is the same coat pattern as Highland Harry, her mount who died in the accident twenty years before. The coloration is so unusual that Annemarie feels there must be a connection between the two animals, and she becomes determined to discover what it is. Eventually, she learns that the horse is Harry’s brother. “Riding Lessons is an exciting character study that uses the equestrian world as a backdrop to a family drama,” mused Harriet Klausner in a review for AllReaders.com.

  • Water for Elephants Sara Gruen
Water for Elephants Sara Gruen “I don’t talk much about those days. Never did. I don’t know why—I worked on circuses for nearly seven years, and if that isn’t fodder for conversation, I don’t know what is. “Actually I do know why: I never trusted myself. I was afraid I’d let it slip. I knew how important it was to keep her secret, and keep it I did for the rest of her life, and then beyond. In seventy years, I’ve never told a blessed soul.” Though he may not speak of them, the memories still dwell inside Jacob Jankowski’s mind, his ninety-something-year-old mind. Memories of himself as a young man, tossed by fate and happenstance onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Memories of a world filled with freaks and clowns, a world filled with wonder and pain and anger and passion, a world with its own dictates, its own narrow, irrational rules, its own way of life, and its own way of death. The world of the circus—to Jacob it was both salvation and a living hell. Jacob was there because his luck had run out—orphaned and penniless, he had no direction until he landed on this locomotive “ship of fools.” It was the early part of the Great Depression, and everyone in this third-rate circus was lucky to have any job at all. Marlena, the star of the circus equestrian act, was there because she fell in love with the wrong man, a handsome circus boss with a very wide mean streak.

The research focuses on how does Jacob try to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need viewed from the Hierarchy of human needs of Abraham H. Maslow’s Theory? This film is carefully and accurately analyzed using the theory of hierarchy of human needs by Abraham H. Maslow. This research uses the qualitative method. The data are analyzed by watching, underlining, understanding, and identifying it. In this research, it find out that in fulfilling and satisfying his self-actualization need, Jacob has distractions from his lower-order needs. So, he must fulfill and satisfy them first to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need. In conclusion, he finally succeeds to fulfill and satisfy his self-actualization need by clearing the distractions from his lower- order needs which he fulfill and satisfy them first. Furthermore, people who cannot fulfill his basic needs can potentially do an evil thing. Keywords: Humanistic Psychology, Human Needs, Self-Actualization. INTRODUCTION Film as a media which could give a picture of broadly cognitivist thinking can be found in reality, it may give some lessons from the way work on film throughout this century (e.g.

  • Tennessee Symbols and Honors
514 TENNESSEE BLUE BOOK Tennessee Symbols And Honors Official Seal of the State Even before Tennessee achieved statehood efforts were made by local govern- mental organizations to procure official seals. Reliable historians have assumed that as early as 1772 the Articles of the Agreement of the Watauga Association authorized the use of a seal. The Legislature of the state of Franklin, by an official act, provided “for procuring a Great Seal for this State,” and there is also evidence that a seal was intended for the Territory South of the River Ohio. The secretary of that territory requested the assistance of Thomas Jefferson in March, 1792, in “suggesting a proper device” for a seal. There is no direct evidence, however, that a seal was ever made for any of these predecessors of Tennessee. When Tennessee became a state, the Constitution of 1796 made provision for the preparation of a seal. Each subsequent constitution made similar provisions and always in the same words as the first. This provision is (Constitution of 1796, Article II, Section 15; Constitution of 1835, Article III, Section 15; Constitution of 1870, Article III, Section 15) as follows: There shall be a seal of this state, which shall be kept by the governor, and used by him officially, and shall be called “The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee.” In spite of the provision of the Constitution of 1796, apparently no action was taken until September 25, 1801. On that date committees made up of members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives were appointed.
