The Spicer Genealogy OUR ENGLISH ANCESTRY. It is with great regret that the compilers of this book feel obliged to publish it before having discovered our English progenitor. We have spent several hundred dollars endeavoring to establish the parentage of Peter Spicer, and Mrs. Cyrus McCormick, Senior, has contributed eight hundred dollars to this search. The geneal­ ogist to whom we intrusted our latest research in England informed us that he had succeeded in locating our ancestor, the father of Peter, and in establishing a most illustrious line back to 1300, but all we have to show of his work is the will of Elizabeth Spicer. He promised a finished narrative the latter part of 1908, and we have waited until November, 1910, for the fulfillment of his prom­ ise. It is' impossible to wait longer. If an article comes from him before the printing is finished, which after verification proves reliable. it will be inserted at the back of the book. If it comes after the printing is finished will be issued separately. It is our opinion that Peter Spicer was a son of Edward Spicer, who came to Virginia in 1635, and that he belonged to the Exeter family to whom the coat of arms pertain, but this may be an entirely erroneous opinion. For the record of the Spicers in England taken from "The Bruces and Cumyns" we are indebted to Mr. William Spicer of Providence, Rhode Island, who kindly sent a printed pamphlet, which has been verified from the copy of the book found at the New England Historical Society Rooms. We thank Mrs. Cyrus l\IcCormick, l\fiss Sarah Spicer, Mr. A. B. Roberts, l\Ir. l\I. Arlington Spicer and Mrs. H. A. Baldwin for their contributions towards English research. To which coat of arms we are entitled, if any, we are not able to state. but have chosen for our frontispiece the one which pleased us most because of the motto. xi COAT OF ARMS. The colors used in the following descriptions of Spicer coats of arms are: Argent, white or silver; Gules, red; Or, golden; and Sable; and these are abbreviated. The descriptions are given as found in various books of Heraldry. 1. Spicer (Weare in Topsham, Co. Devon. THE SPICER GENEALOGY THE SPICERS IN ENGLAND. The following record of the Spicers in England is from a volume entitled "The Bruces and the Cumyns," published in Edinburgh and London, 1870, a copy of which is in possession of Mr. F . M. Ballou, of Providence, R. I.: The above arc the Ancient Spicer Family Arms, as they appear in a window of old painted glass in the Exeter Town Hall. "Some account of the ancient family of the Spicers, taken from an original ma nuscript extracted from a chorographical description of the County of D evon, written by Tristam Risden, Gent., of Winscot, Devon, A.D. 1714. [Page 650, Appendix U.J " Three brothers of this name (Spicer), who were of an honourable family in Normandy. came over as gentlemen volunteers with William the Conqueror. The first settled in Devonshire. the second in Warwickshire, and the third in K ent. The two fo rmer still remain in the said counties. Of the state of which family an abstract is here given from an original MS. written in the thirty­ sixth year of Queen Elizabeth's reign (1594), which gives an account 2 Tire Spicer Genealogy. of them, from their first being officers and magistrates of the honour­ able City of Exeter, beginning with the first year of King Edwarci I, and continued down in the same family to the seventh of Queen Anne, which, to the present year, r7r4, is 441 years, of which time there have been twelve mayors of the City of Exeter, of this name, and the particular time of each is hereafter mentioned. 'Tis observable that few families can show such a precedent of the office of mayor of so ancient and honourable a city, continuing for so long a course of years, their estate being also equivalent to their antiquity - they having also bestowed a considerable one on the chamber of Exeter, to uphold its grandeur. " Abstracts from the manuscript of I 594, as given by Tristam Risden, A.D. 17r4. - "In the reign of King Edward III, John Spicer was sundry times Mayor of the City of Exeter, and in the third year of his mayorality, being the thirty-first of the said King's reign, Anno 1357, he received private letters from the King, and also a commission under the great seal of England, dated the 25th of March, and <lirectc<l thus: 'To our loving, the :Mayor of our honourable City of Exeter, for three ships, to be provided and sent unto him, and to be well and thoroughly appointed, to the wars and for the defense of the realm against the French King, who had then a great fleet and navy on the seas of men of war, which thing the Mayor with all celerity performed; and in the year then following, he also being Mayor, the Prince, called the Black Prince, came from out of France, and brought with him prisoner~ King John of France, whom he had taken a little while before at Poictiers. He landed at Plymouth .. and came to this city, whom the Mayor received, and the King, his prisoner, with all the honour he could; and entertained them most bountifully, and after the best manner he might. which the Prince did not only thankfully receive, but he made also his father acquainted with the same, who sendest back his commendations unto the said Mayor.''     RECENT PUBLICATIONS John Wilhelm Rowntree 1868-1905 and the beginnings of modern Quakerism. By Stephen Allott. Sessions Book Trust, York, 1994. Pp. xiv + 138. £7.00. Stephen Allott's concise and appealing account of John Wilhelm Rowntree makes very considerable use of quotations. It is well-illustrated. Rowntree was one of the most influential Friends of his day and made a great contribution to the Society despite his involvement in business, his chronic ill-health and his sadly early death at the age of 36. Allott provides a valuable addition to the studies of British Quakerism in the crucial period around the beginning of this century. It is timely background to the consideration of the impact of the Manchester conference of 1895. Rowntree will now be known to Friends not so much as a pioneer in writing Quaker history as for being part of it. He had hoped to make a major new historical study and gathered a collection of Quaker literature in preparation for this, later to pass to the Woodbrooke Library. His lectures on the rise of Quakerism in Yorkshire in his Essays and Addresses form his main published historical contribution. They went beyond narrative to exhortation and explained his vision for the Society of Friends. History for him was not a matter of satisfying academic curiosity but of tracing the evolution of contemporary Quakerism and explaining the relevance of the past to the questions of the day. The Rowntree series of Quaker histories built on his vision, effectively as his memorial. His deep friendship with Rufus Jones led to Jones's major contribution to the series alongside W.C.

At the same time, nearly eight thousand members of the Dukhobori (commonly transliterated as “Doukhobors” and translated as “Spirit Wrestlers”) sought refuge from escalating religious persecution perpetrated by Russian church and state authorities. Initially, the Doukhobors’ immigration to Canada in 1899 seemed to satisfy the needs of host and newcomer alike. Both parties soon realized, however, that the Doukhobors’ transition would prove more difficult than anticipated. The Doukhobors’ collective memory of persecution negatively influenced their perception of state interventions in their private affairs. In addition, their expectation that they would be able to preserve their ethno-religious identity on their own terms clashed with Canadian expectations that they would soon integrate into the Canadian mainstream.     FRIENDS AND WAR 1899-1945 I cannot begin this address without telling you how proud I am of the honour you have done me in making me your President for this year. When I think of the names of previous Presidents of our Society 1 feel very humble. One of my predecessors was Robert H. Marsh (1856-1942), teacher, accountant and financier whom I shall mention again later.' Speaking nearly a century ago Marsh uttered words which some of his successors might wish to reiterate: 'It is hard that an unfortunate president who has really nothing to say should have to say it in the absence of further items on the Agenda that might have sheltered him from his doom'.2 Marsh went on to deliver a detailed lecture on a Kentish charity, founded in the seventeenth century, of which he had been steward for thirty years. His address did not fall into the category which he indicated and I hope that what follows will not either. It is generally assumed that Quakers are and always have been pacifists. My intention is to suggest that this assumption is mistaken, at least so far as the major foreign wars of the period 1899-1945 are concerned. This is the theme which this talk seeks to address. (My guess, after a mere twenty-odd years of membership of the Religions Society of Friends, is that by no means all Friends are pacifists today, or would be if a hypothetical war involved large numbers of British armed forces). Journal OF JAN. 10, 1903.] A MOST interesting function took place at the Guildhall, Glouces- ter, on Tuesday afternoon, the occasion being the unveiling of a portrait in oils of the late Mr. John Bellows, and the presentation of the picture to the Corporation, on behalf of the subscribers. The company present was an influential and representative one On the motion of the Mayor (Aid. E. Sidney Hartland), sec- onded by Mr. F. A. Hyett, the Lord Lieutenant of the County (the Earl of Ducie), was asked to preside. His Lordship said he felt it an honor to be called upon to perform the ceremony for which they had assembled that after- noon. He had had the good fortune to know the late John Bellows for forty years or more. They had many tastes in common, and often met and corresponded, and he learnt to know not only his personal worth, but his great ability. John Bellows was a many-sided man, and he did not think any one person could have really known him thoroughly. He was a traveller linguist, antiquary, and many other things. Apart from his relation to the City and County of Gloucester, he was widely known as editor and proprietor of Bellows's French Dictionary. That was a book of great intrinsic merit, and he expected every- body knew it. If Dr. Johnson had lived, even he would have commended it, although he might have had something sarcastic to say about the effeminacy of the present race that required a dictionary not to weigh more than flve or six ounces.

By analyzing the significance of his missionary work and the fruits of his intellectual and linguistic ability, we can better understand the efforts of the ABCFM missionaries to seek converts to the Protestant faith in the Ottoman Empire. I focus mainly on the period that began with Riggs’ sailing from Boston to Athens in 1832 as a missionary of the ABCFM until his death in Istanbul on January 17, 1901.

Both romantic nonsense and modern pompous disparagement have disap­ peared. Women are considered to be free to love mountains and scale them, just like men. Many followed in Lucy Walker's footsteps: Miss Brevoort, Mrs. E. P. Jackson, · Miss K. Richardson and others. The romantic lady mountaineer disappeared from verses and novels. The girl in A. E. W. Mason's Running Water is a lifelike character. and a Mountain Maid no longer. But few novelists have succeeded so well ; truth and fiction are worlds apart. • IN MEMORIAM JOHN NORMAN COLLIE THE Club has lost, in NoRMAN COLLIE, a mountaineer of outstanding eminence, an ex-President, a great scientist, and a very lovable character, though, on account of his modest and retiring nature, he was perhaps not known intimately to many of the younger generation. The writer's only claim to the honour of writing this memorial is that he had the privilege of being Honorary Secretary during Collie's Presidency, 1920-22, and he feels much diffidence· in attempting to do justice to so great a man, when many able pens will be employed in paying him tribute.
