Summer Reading Program-2018 Entering Third Grade Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." —Maya Angelou Dear Families, Did you know that children who do not read over the summer experience the “summer slide” and can lose up to two months of learning by the time they return to school in the fall! But there’s good news. Research shows that reading or listening to as few as six books over the summer break can help children maintain their reading skills and score higher in reading and math when they return to school! We strongly recommend that your child read at least six books during the summer break. And we encourage you to read to your child. Kids this age benefit tremendously from hearing stories read aloud. We also want you to visit the local library with your child this summer and check out the free summer fun activities happening and sign up for a free library card! The following booklist is the work of our teachers and literacy coaches. We hope you and your child will love these titles, but feel free to add any books for your reader. The staff in the children’s area of the public library will have many wonderful suggestions. Attached to the booklist is a reading log. Have your child fill out the reading log and give it to his or her new teacher in the fall. We’re so excited to see what your child read and we’ll be using the list as part of our Books, Buddies & Blankets Reading Celebration this fall. -

We redoubled our efforts to provide Nparents and caregivers with the tools necessary to help children become ready to read—a predictor of future academic success. Through weekly classes at every library, by increasing outreach to daycare providers Life Expanded and preschools and in building stronger partnerships with the public schools, we Anne Arundel County Public Library are seeing results. Last year more than 86,000 children, parents and caregivers attended our early literacy classes and we reached 10,000 more at community events. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Officers We remain committed to school readiness and so we’ve changed the name of our education programs to M Hall Worthington – Chairman Every Child Ready to Read. Mirroring the national initiative sponsored by the Public Library Association Ellan Thorson – Vice Chairman and Association for Library Service to Children, we believe this title more accurately reflects the intent of Donald E Roland – Treasurer our programs. Grades K - 6 Summer 2021 Literacy Activities This school year has been overwhelmingly exhausting and challenging for our students. We would like our students to take a break from digital classrooms and working on-line to just relax. However, we still want our students to practice reading skills. One wonderful, exciting way to relax and continue to learn is to get lost in a book. This summer play the Summer Reading Bingo Game. Choose your bingo board and get started. Mark off which square you completed. Get five squares in a row diagonally, horizontally, or vertically and you have BINGO! Continue to play to see how many squares you can complete. There are also a few surprises on the boards, so have fun. (Hint: Hit control -click to follow the links) Turn in your bingo board to your teacher by September 7, 2021 and earn a prize. ® ™ Learning Guide About the Books The WellieWishers are a group of fun-loving girls who each have the same big, bright wish: to be a good friend. They love to play in a large and leafy backyard garden cared for by Willa’s Aunt Miranda. When the WellieWishers step into their colorful garden boots, also known as wellingtons or wellies, they are ready for anything—stomping in mud puddles, putting on a show, and helping friendships grow. Each day brings new adventures and new opportunities to learn that being kind, creative, and caring isn’t always easy, but it’s the best way to make friendships bloom. About This Guide and Emotional Intelligence Empathy, or “standing in another child’s wellies,” is a core theme in the three WellieWishers books featured in this guide: The Riddle of the Robin, Ashlyn’s Unsurprise Party, and The Muddily- Puddily Show. ® ™ 1974 A Teacher’s Guide to The Big Break A Julie Classic Includes Common Core State Standards Correlations About the Book Growing up in San Francisco in the 1970s, fourth-grader Julie Albright is struggling to deal with her parents’ recent divorce at a time when divorce wasn’t common. She is moving from her house to an apartment in a new neighborhood with her mother and older sister. She misses her dad, though she sees him on week- ends, and she wishes her sister, Tracy, didn’t blame the new situation on him. At Julie’s new elementary school, the only person who makes her feel welcome is T. J., a boy who appreci- ates her interest in playing basketball. There are no girls’ team sports at Jack London Elementary School, so Julie decides she wants to play on the boys’ team. When the coach tells her the team is for boys only, Julie circulates a “Let Girls Play Too” peti- tion and delivers it first to the coach, who tosses it in the garbage, and then to the principal. Julie finds out that it takes courage and perseverance to create change, and through it all she begins to accept the change in her family as well.
