Dear Concessionaire: From the entire Concessions & Quality Assurance staff, welcome to Detroit Metropolitan Airport. We hope to make your experience at Detroit Metro exciting, enjoyable, and profitable. The Concessions Department is comprised of professionals with experience in airport planning, real estate management and development, retail/food and beverage management, marketing, contracting, and finance. Our main goal is to ensure your initial and continued success at the Airport. Many of the passengers who arrive at Detroit Metro Airport are here for the first time. First impressions are important. We want to strive to make the Airport an enjoyable environment for all travelers. Our day-to-day concessions management will focus on the following areas: customer service, contract administration and compliance, performance standards monitoring, marketing and promotion, contract support, and tenant coordination support. Attached is the Tenant Handbook, which details useful reference information and various policies and procedures. Please make this important reference available to your on-site staff. Gholz, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2011 In recent years, the city of Detroit’s economic struggles, including its cultural expressions, have become focal points for discussing the health of the American dream. However, this discussion has rarely strayed from the use of hackneyed factory metaphors, worn-out success-and-failure stories, and an ever-narrowing cast of characters. The result is that the common sense understanding of Detroit’s musical and cultural legacy tends to end in 1972 with the departure of Motown Records from the city to Los Angeles, if not even earlier in the aftermath of the riot / uprising of 1967. In “‘Where The Mix Is Perfect’: Voices From The Post-Motown Soundscape,” I provide an oral history of Detroit’s post-Motown aural history and in the process make available a new urban imaginary for judging the city’s wellbeing.

No further reproduction is authorized without written permission from Department of Musicology, UCLA.*** Abstract: The media coverage of rapper Eminem in the days immediately preceding and following the 2001 Grammy awards rehearsed a number of common tropes regarding controversial art forms: is free artistic expression more important than a moral social order? Is there a distinction between individual expression and commercial manipulation? Do portrayals of violence beget more violence? Is rap music indeed “music”? Concerns about vulgar language, homophobia, and the degradation of women arose from a range of voices because The Marshall Mathers LP had been nominated for the prestigious “Album of the Year” award by the members of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences. According to C. Michael Greene, then the Grammy organization’s president, the nomination was intended to “recognize [Eminem’s] music and not his message” (All Things Considered). At the time, I found feminist objections to Eminem’s depictions of violence against women particularly salient perhaps because, between the Music History Sequence and the Opera History course I was then teaching, I tallied a depressingly large number of dead women. My gruesome accounting revealed four women murdered by jealous husbands or boyfriends; two killed or raped by authority figures; one ritually sacrificed; and five who died after having been seduced and abandoned or forced to marry against their will—for a body count of twelve dead women in one semester of teaching.
