I survey a broad range of narratives that reflect the power dynamics involved in identity formations, especially those related to substitution of the self by a language that both defines and informs the associative collective group. The advantages of identity for the group often comes at the expense of the individual, as illustrated in the second chapter on the Haitian institution of Restavecs. A close look at how a single word can make over three hundred thousand children disappear from the social landscape while, simultaneously, affording its members the use of those children for personal gain, I focus on the excluded presence of the human being reflected in language. Jean Robert Cadet’s autobiographical account illustrates that, for the individual, identity formations can become the artificial consciousness that informs, not only the language used, but also the self. This three ring circus (the community, the authority of language, and the individual) reflects a pattern repeated in a broad range of narrative mediums. Alongside biblical, mythological and autobiographical texts, other illustrations of this construct are analyzed in films by Lars von Trier and Jonathan Demme. Both directors produce visual iii representations of the primacy of language and the difficult nature of communication. Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye is analyzed as an example of the fragile nature of the self, constantly threatened by language and the internalization of identity constructs. Introduction The idea for this dissertation began with an outburst I made while talking to a friend. “Jesus can only bring Lazarus back from the dead; he cannot give him his life back!” I was taken aback by it because I had not intended to make such an assertion. I was prepared to let the issue lie, but I wondered where such an incongruous thought might have come from; why did I say it? It was a case of speech coming before thought.     1 BONUS CHAPTER ANTHROPOLOGY OF AMERICAN RELIGION America’s Silicon Valley might seem like the least likely place in the country to search for religion: liberal demographics and secularization theory would predict that upwardly mobile, technology-oriented people such as those concentrated in northern California are among the least religious Americans. That may indeed be true, or it may be more accurate to say that the religion of Silicon Valley’s computer professionals is unconventional and adapted to their middle class lifestyle and their technological worldview. Accordingly, Stef Aupers finds an assortment of “technopagans” among these modern skilled computer programmers, who “conceive of the act of programming as magical” (2009: 153). Noting first that “pagans are more active on the Internet than other religious groups” (156), Aupers follows Erik Davis’ (1995) definition of technopaganism as a “small but vital subculture of digital savants who keep one foot in the emerging technosphere and one foot in the wild and wooly world of Paganism…. They are Dionysian nature worshippers who embrace the Apollonian artifice of logical machines.” The magic of educated computer professionals, though, is not “magic as a ritual” but rather “the mystery of intangible, opaque, digital technology,” in which “the personal computer is sometimes the object of mystical speculations” (Aupers 2009: 161). Ironically but profoundly, computer technology is both vanishingly small and vanishingly large: it embraces the wonders of microprocessors and whirling electrons as well as the globe-spanning scope of the World Wide Web. More, “the Internet can no longer be understood in a mechanical way since it ‘grows’ and ‘behaves’ in an organic fashion”; indeed, “the Internet actualizes an ancient holistic claim about the universe: like in the cosmos as a whole, everything and everyone is ‘connected’” (161).

    The Role of Dance in Haitian Vodou Camille Chambers, University of Florida Dancing, along with singing and drumming, is a fundamental part of Haitian Vodou ritual ceremonies. Just as how the songs and the drums have a spiritual function and reflect a creolized heritage, dance holds a similar value in Vodou. As a religion that is kinesthetic in nature, dance is part of the physical manifestation of serving the lwa. Dance is not only an important part of Haitian Vodou but also of Haitian culture, in which there are two types of dance: secular and sacred (Dunham 1947: 15). For the purpose of this paper, the sacred dance will be addressed. Many anthropologists have studied ritual dances in the African diaspora of the Caribbean. Through the studies of dance in Haitian Vodou, the connection to spirituality and memory provided to the community through dance and music in Vodou ceremonies is evident. The community is a key element in Vodou ceremonies. Hebblethwaite argues that Vodou songs are important because they are the “living memory of a Vodou community” (2012: 2). Dance holds the same importance in preserving this “living memory.” Vodou songs educate about the lwa and the philosophy of Vodou and they signal the transitions between phases of the ceremony. Dance in Vodou also educates about the lwa and philosophy and through careful study of the different dances, one may also understand how dances change in the different phases of the ceremony. Before getting into the study of dances, the importance of drums must be addressed. Wilcken (2005) describes the drums as providing the fuel and guidance to the dance participants.

    Afro-Caribbean Vodou, Serving the Spirits Vodou, Serving the Spirits Summary: Vodou (meaning "spirit" or "god" in the Fon and Ewe languages of West Africa) is a blending (syncretism) of African religious traditions and Catholicism. In the United States, Vodou religious ceremonies are often performed in private group settings where spirits manifest in devotees through posession. The term "Vodou" derives from a word meaning “spirit” or “god” in the Fon and Ewe languages of West Africa. It has come to be used as the name for the religious traditions of Haiti, which blend Fon, Kongo, and Yoruba African religions with French Catholicism. However, while Haitians themselves speak more often of “serving the spirits,” today they also use the term Vodou. Since the late 1950s, with the Haitian immigrant and refugee population increasing in the United States, these traditions of “serving the spirits” have become part of the American religious landscape. By the late 18th century, the Caribbean island of St. Domingue, or Hispaniola, of which Haiti occupies the western third, had already received considerably more African captives than Cuba or the United States would receive throughout their participation in the slave trade. Nearly half of the laborers who worked the island’s sugar plantations came from West and Central Africa. After the Haitian revolution made Haiti an independent nation in 1804, the influx of African slaves was cut off, but the large Haitian citizenry of African descent continued to develop elaborate African-inspired traditions. The Vodou gods or spirits, called lwa, are grouped into several “nations,” linked to areas and peoples in Africa.

This particular period of the twentieth century is not only crucial to study since it presents the continuing conflict between the dominant white heteronormative society and subjugated minority cultures but, more importantly, because the Enlightenment’s libertarian ideal of individual freedom finally encouraged non-conformists of diverse backgrounds such as gender, race, and sexuality to take a collective stance against oppression. At the same time, it is important to stress that the cultural production of these popular texts emerged from and within the conditions of American culture rather than the native context of Haiti. Hence, Vodou in these American popular texts is subject to cultural appropriation, a paradigm that is broadly defined as the use of cultural practices and objects by members of another culture.

This paper will present a case study of a multidisciplinary investigation of one type of flags. Haitian Vodou flags (drapo Vodou) are little known to vexillologists, but have been studied by scholars in the fields of art, anthropology, African-American studies, and other disciplines. An investigation of prior scholarship from these areas demon- strates that this category of flags is not only significantly different than the flags usually examined by vexillologists, but they also have much to teach us about the study of flags as a multidisciplinary exercise. There are several books that are focused on Vodou flags. Patrick Arthur Polk, a prolific researcher on the topic, has produced a colorful and informative book titled Haitian Vodou Flags (1999).     Across the Waters: Kongo Presence in Contemporary Art of the Americas Jennifer Potter College of Fine Arts, University of Florida The Fall 2013 international exhibition Kongo across the Waters at the Harn Museum of Art will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of African presence in the state of Florida by featuring art associated with the Kongo people of Central Africa and the later African Diaspora, including the work of several contemporary artists. These contemporary artists incorporate Kongo and Kongo- influenced spiritual and cultural concepts into their work, but they do so in different ways based on the individual relationships that they cultivate with these traditional ideas. This study will explore and analyze the distinctively Kongo aspects of pieces by specific contemporary artists featured in the exhibition. Ultimately, the presence of fundamental Kongo concepts in their art emphasizes the enduring impact of Kongo ideas on contemporary culture.     Status of Twins in Yorùbá and Haitian Society and Religion Emily Hanson, University of Florida The existence of twins has provoked curiosity and interest across numerous societies and cultures. From the twin Greek gods Artemis and Apollo, to the Old Testament twin brothers Jacob and Esau, it often falls to religion to explain the twins relationship to each other and the rest of society. Among African religions, this explanation has varied throughout different periods, and continues to be a focus in rituals today. Haitian Vodou is a cultural descendant of many traditional African societies, including the Dahomian and Yorùbá peoples. This paper will examine beliefs about twins in Yorùbá and Haitian society and religion. I have juxtaposed these societies to demonstrate how traditional African beliefs have evolved both within Africa and upon transport to the New World. Acknowledgement of the continued influence of African culture on the Caribbean culture is important for placing Caribbean traditions in their appropriate context. The status of twins is a good demonstration of this enduring connection, as Haitian, Yorùbá, and Fon societies share a similar appreciation for twins. Academics have characterized Yorùbá enthusiasm for twins as a “cult of twins,” and Vodouists consider twins a sacred gift. Comparison of the ritual and mythology surrounding twins in both societies reveals the role of Yorùbá traditions in modern Haitian Vodou. The Yorùbá are one of the largest ethnolinguistic groups in Nigeria, with a population of about 20 million people residing in the Southwest (Yoruba, 2012). During the forced removal of African slaves and their subsequent dispersion, the culture and religion of the Yorùbá people spread to regions of South America and the Caribbean.

    CHAPTER 1 The World of Vodou Songs The Roots of Vodou Vodou is the hereditary spiritual tradition of African descendants in Haiti (Jil and Jil 2009). Th roughout the ages, Vodou has been transmitted by the elders to the children: Depi m piti, m ap chante pou lwa yo. Since I was small, I have been singing for the lwa.2 Se pa ti nèg ki te montre m chante o. Oh it wasn’t a little guy who showed me how to sing. Adje, kite m montre chante Bondje! Oh heavens, let me teach God’s songs! Depi nan vant manman m, Ever since my mother’s womb, gwo lwa m yo reklame mwen. Bilolo!1 my great lwa have claimed me. Bilolo! Vodou, or serving the lwa (spiritual beings and forces), is a religion, philosophy, culture and way of life that comes mainly from two major regions in Africa: Dahomey (Benin, Nigeria) and the Kongo. Dahomey was a large African king- dom and empire that spanned three centuries until the French invasion and colonization in 1892.3 It included parts of the countries currently known as Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, and Benin, the seat of its power. Fon, Yorùbá, and Ewe were the three important Dahomian ethnolinguistic groups in the early colo- nial period of Saint-Domingue (c. 1680–1750; see Bellegarde-Smith 2006). Th e second major infl uence came from the Kongo, which supplied the majority of slaves in the late colonial period (c. 1750–1791). On the eve of the Haitian Revolution in 1791, the Kongo population equaled the Dahomian population (Jil and Jil 2009: 199).
