  • SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Friday, March 17, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants’ Christian Arroyo: next piece of homegrown infield? John Shea SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The Giants love shortstops. Theirs is one of the best in baseball, Brandon Crawford. Their second baseman was drafted as a shortstop and converted in the minors, Joe Panik. They drafted Matt Duffy as a shortstop and taught him to play third base as a big-leaguer. Last summer, they traded for Eduardo Nuñez, who had played mostly shortstop during his career but played third after Duffy was traded to Tampa Bay. Heck, even Buster Posey played shortstop in college. No wonder the Giants’ top hitting prospect is a shortstop. Not that Christian Arroyo is targeted to play the position in the big leagues, not with Mr. Crawford in the house. Arroyo, who’s 21 going on 30, is the team’s third baseman of the future, and we’re not talking the distant future. It’s not unrealistic to imagine Arroyo playing third on Opening Day in 2018, so long as he continues to excel on the fast track. 1 “For me, they stressed the value of versatility,” Arroyo said at his Scottsdale Stadium locker. “Staying versatile is going to be huge.” Arroyo was the Giants’ top draft pick in 2013 — he was salutatorian at Hernando High School in Brooksville, Fla. — and he signed after turning down a scholarship from Florida, where he would have studied architectural engineering. He’s plenty smart enough to realize his ticket to the big leagues might not be at his No.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Monday, May 7, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Monday, May 7, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Giants complete sweep of Atlanta in Andrew Suarez’s first big-league win Henry Schulman ATLANTA — The Giants’ charge over the past five series can be dissected a dozen different ways, from their stable of older hitters starting to progress toward their career numbers, to the excellent pitching, to younger players such as Mac Williamson, Alen Hanson and Andrew Suarez arriving from the minors and infusing life into the team. Or, just let Pablo Sandoval distill it in three words. “We’re having fun,” Sandoval said after the Giants survived a ninth-inning scare and beat Atlanta 4-3 Sunday to complete their first series sweep of 2018 against a team that came into the weekend with the swagger befitting a 19-11 team. The Giants finished their fifth consecutive series win and forged their first four-game win streak of the season. They have won seven of their past eight, and 12 of 16, with their two top starting pitchers, closer and second baseman out of the picture. The Giants outscored the Braves 24-9 as several hitters who began the year slowly, contributing to the team’s 7-11 start, got healthier at run-friendly SunTrust Park. Andrew McCutchen went 5-for-10 with three walks, a hit batsman and a sacrifice fly. Brandon Crawford was 8-for-14 after entering the series 20-for-98 for the season. Hanson was 6-for-14 with three doubles, a homer and two hand-first slides into the plate for runs that put a charge into the dugout.

SF Giants Press Clips Tuesday, March 14, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Buster Posey’s absence means more work for Giants’ backups John Shea SURPRISE, Ariz. — Life without Buster Posey continues for the Giants’ pitchers. It could be a while before they get their All-Star catcher back. “Hopefully,” Jeff Samardzija said. Not that Samardzija doesn’t like having Posey around. He’s just rooting for Posey and shortstop Brandon Crawford to play deep into the World Baseball Classic. The Americans advanced past the first round, meaning Posey and Crawford will continue suiting up for the United States at least through Saturday. Meantime, backup catcher Nick Hundley is getting extra work with the pitching staff, probably a good thing for the newcomer who signed a one-year deal in January. On Monday night, he caught Samardzija for the first time. The right-hander worked his pitch count to 76 but gave up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits and two walks in 32/3 innings against the Rangers. “It’s always good to work out those kinks,” Samardzija said. “It’s good to have him back there so he can know what I shake (off pitches) to, what we’re on the same page with, getting a better idea of what we throw.” It was Samardzija’s fourth start. He has thrown to Posey twice and Trevor Brown once. His ERA is 9.82. 1 “Overall, it felt good. I was strong until the end,” Samardzija said. “You always care about results. It’s not the defining factor in spring training, but obviously you want to have good days.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Sunday, April 9, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Sunday, April 9, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Giants fall to 1-5 despite Bumgarner complete game Henry Schulman SAN DIEGO - The Padres, who were supposed to lose something like 159 games this year, started a Rule 5 shortstop Saturday night who had not played one game above rookie ball before Opening Day. As Allen Cordoba and the rest of the Padres have shown the past two games, if nine players are wearing major-league uniforms, they can beat you, especially if you play subpar baseball. Heaven knows Giants have not been able to dust the word "subpar" off their uniforms, which hardly got dirty in a 2-1 loss that secured a series loss to a team widely being mocked and criticized for tanking the season. For the first time since 2008, the last of four straight losing seasons, the Giants have started with five losses in six games. They conclude a terrible opening week Sunday. How terrible could be settled by Johnny Cueto, who pitched and ran the Giants to their only win Tuesday. Madison Bumgarner took his first loss Saturday despite overcoming a rough first two innings and holding San Diego to two runs over eight innings in a complete games. 1 With one out in the eighth and nobody on, manager Bruce Bochy let him hit for himself. Bumgarner could have used the two solo homers he hit on Opening Day, but neither he nor his eight mates could solve Jhoulys Chacin, who shut them out on three hits over 6 2/3 innings after the Dodgers torched him for nine runs in 3 1/3 in his first start.

  • Yoenis Cespedes: 3 Potential Landing Spots
Yoenis Cespedes: 3 potential landing spots Author : Robert D. Cobb To me, Yoenis Cespedes is one of the most intriguing big name free agents out there to me. He’s currently only 31 years old and may have one of if not the strongest arms in the MLB as well as having a lightning quick bat through the zone. I truly don’t understand why teams have moved him like they have. [embedit snippet="sreed-ads"] He started off his MLB career with the Oakland Athletics, then got shipped to Boston for a season, after that spent a season in Detroit with the Tigers, and then finally spending each of the last two seasons with the New York Mets. He’s been a bit of a traveling man and looks to find somewhere to finish his career off with at this point in his carry. Here we go with my top three potential landing places this time with the Cuban missile Yoenis Cespedes. 1. Toronto Blue Jays With the Blue Jays, more than likely losing both Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion this off-season to free agency what makes more sense than filling the hole Bautista leaves with a younger Yoenis Cespedes. The Jays management has spent money in the past and will more than likely be willing to bolster this lineup after two massive departures again. Cespedes playing in the Rogers Centre could be a good fit. Another one of those hitter-friendly ballparks in the MLB that could pay huge dividends to for both the Blue Jays and Cespedes.

  • SF Giants Press Clips Monday, May 28, 2018
SF Giants Press Clips Monday, May 28, 2018 San Francisco Chronicle Giants calling up Dereck Rodriguez, son of Hall of Famer Ivan ‘Pudge” Rodriguez John Shea The Giants need another pitcher for their series in Denver, and the call went to Derek Rodriguez, who referenced the promotion on his Instagram account: “Just got the best call of my life!!!! It’s showtime !!!” Rodriguez, 25, the son of Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez, was 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA in nine starts for Triple-A Sacramento. The Giants were down a reliever in their three-game series in Chicago, after left fielder Mac Williamson took lefty Josh Osich’s roster spot. They’ll need a full complement of relievers in the hitting-friendly confines of Coors Field, where they’ll play their next three games. Rodriguez signed a minor-league contract with the Giants over the winter after spending seven seasons in the Twins’ organization. He converted from an outfielder to pitcher in 2014. Rodriguez’s dad tagged out J.T. Snow at the plate to end the 2003 Division Series, sending the Giants home and the Marlins to the next round. 1 “I was there. I was in the clubhouse,” the younger Rodriguez said in spring training. “When my dad played, I was always in the clubhouse. For sure, it’s one of his best moments. He always says it. He still has the ball.” The Giants will need to create a spot on the 40-man roster and also remove someone from the 25-man roster.
