  • Rare Plant Register
1 BSBI RARE PLANT REGISTER Berkshire & South Oxfordshire V.C. 22 MICHAEL J. CRAWLEY FRS UPDATED APRIL 2005 2 Symbols and conventions The Latin binomial (from Stace, 1997) appears on the left of the first line in bold, followed by the authority in Roman font and the English Name in italics. Names on subsequent lines in Roman font are synonyms (including names that appear in Druce’s (1897) or Bowen’s (1964) Flora of Berkshire that are different from the name of the same species in Stace). At the right hand side of the first line is a set of symbols showing - status (if non-native) - growth form - flowering time - trend in abundance (if any) The status is one of three categories: if the plant arrived in Britain after the last ice age without the direct help of humans it is defined as a native, and there is no symbol in this position. If the archaeological or documentary evidence indicates that a plant was brought to Berkshire intentionally of unintentionally by people, then that species is an alien. The alien species are in two categories ● neophytes ○ archaeophytes Neophytes are aliens that were introduced by people in recent times (post-1500 by convention) and for which we typically have precise dates for their first British and first Berkshire records. Neophytes may be naturalized (forming self-replacing populations) or casual (relying on repeated introduction). Archaeophytes are naturalized aliens that were carried about by people in pre-historic times, either intentionally for their utility, or unintentionally as contaminants of crop seeds. Archaeophytes were typically classified as natives in older floras.

  • The Official Chess Yearbook 2010 Foreword
English Chess Federation The Official Chess Yearbook 2010 Foreword I played chess actively for a decade, racking up hundreds of games every year. Although my fanatical playing days are behind me, the welfare of chess, both in England and internationally, is still an overriding passion for me. After my election in 2009, I was determined to use the ECF Presidency as a force for good throughout the chess community. My predecessor Gerry Walsh made enormous advances in promoting the English game and its players all over the world and I hope to be able to continue this work. However, it is no secret that the domestic situation has deteriorated recently and this will be the focus of my attention. England is still a significant chess power and I believe the casual attitude of merely 'punching above our weight' is no longer relevant. The stunning successes of the Staunton Memorial and the London Chess Classic proved the country is capable of staging magnificent world class events and it is essential we build on this in the coming years. We have an amazing array of wonderfully talented players, at every level of the game, and their passion and enthusiasm can only be inspiring for those that work to enhance the situation for chess. I cannot promise miracles but I will promise to listen to any individual, club, league or tournament that has anything to say. I am travelling extensively to meet people, within the chess community, government and business, to establish relationships which can be used in order to further the ambitions of the ECF and its members.

There is a feeling experiencedprobably by most people in connection with an old hotise, more es- pecially should that aid house chance to be ones home, namely, a curiosity about its past—a wish to know as much as can be learnt about those who have inhabited it in past generations, whether they lived sadly or happily in the midst of these scenes now familiar to ourselves, what they looked like & what were their occupa- tions, their interests & their characters ; all these are questions to which we wouldfain seek a fuller answer than can be found in the histories of the country at large. It seems very sad that mens & women's lives should pass away from their homes almost as do those of the dumb cattle, forgotten & unrecorded exceptfor a line in the parish register, & a half-obliterated & seldom read inscription on the church floor.

A desk study has drawn on information derived from OS map sheets, historical and biological data sources, and from professionals with local knowledge, to identify wood-pasture and parkland habitats of importance, or potential importance, for veteran trees. The aim of the study was to provide baseline information that can be used to develop a prioritised programme of site survey and assessment, to identify the extent of the veteran tree interest of the three counties, in terms of biological interests, and to promote their conservation. The results demonstrate the current poor knowledge of the veteran tree resource in the three counties. Out of a total of 423 sites identified with actual or potential interest for veteran trees, 155 (37%) could only be identified as having possible interest, and a further 26 (6%) as of probable interest.

  • Yearbook 2006
Foreword Dear Chess Friends 2007 was another sad year as the chess community lost a number of valued organisers and arbiters. It was just a year ago that I reported Roy Heppinstall was making a recovery and now as we all know mourn his passing. I am indebted to my colleagues on the committee of Hastings International Congress that the event his year will be dedicated to the many arbiters and organisers who have died in recent years. My particular thanks go to Stewart Reuben who managed to write such a nice tribute covering all of our dear departed chess friends, namely Tony Banks, Tony Bastable, John Bisson, Steve Boniface, Michael Brent, David Bronstein, David Brown, Keith Brown, Lord Callaghan, Lady Callaghan, Philip Church, Ian Cowen, Vernon Dilworth, Richard Furness, Isaac Iglesias, George Goodwin, Pete Harrison, Frank Hatto, Roy Heppinstall, Ted Johnson, Joyce Macdonald-Ross, Fred Manning, Ian Mason, Eric McCanlis, Kenneth Messere, Lady Milner-Barry, Michael O’Hara, Robert Pinner, John Robinson, Arie Rozenberg, David Pritchard, Walter Sebley, Peter Shaw, Jack Speigel, Simon Webb, Paul Watson, Roy Woodcock. October Council saw the elections with only one change, Chris Majer stood down as Director of Home Chess to be replaced by David Welch. I would like to take this opportunity to record a public thanks to Chris for his work over a number of years. I am pleased to advise that will not loose Chris completely as he was appointed Grading Manager. The John Robinson Trust continues to fund Junior Chess activity and a full report on the first year is available from the office.
