Interpack 2014 - Product Review. IML Digital with Xeikon. Ti’s OPP Film Technology at Labelexpo Americas 2014 in Chicago. Servicing South America & South Africa: Ti is Shortening the Distance of Supply. Dear Customers, Dear Colleagues,

Here we are, mid-year 2014, and I see no respite in our level of activity. I had the pleasure to meet many of you during Interpack, and was able to judge the intensity and the strategic value of our common interests. For Taghleef Industries, this was an outstanding event, where we could feel the pulse of the market and verify the relevance of our offerings. I was also able to spend time with each of the Ti executives that were present, enjoying privileged moments in the building of our group.

We are welcoming a new member to Taghleef Industries, Derprosa Film from Spain, as we continue our quest to strengthen our product and asset portfolio, clearly this time, with an organization anchored in the specialties sector. I am curious to witness how fast our teams will deploy the unique know-how of this company, and how much Derprosa’s management will influence Ti so we may become an even better organization.

In regard to our internal growth, I would like to salute our Egyptian colleagues, and our European Sales force, for the successful ramp-up of the new line at 6th of October City, as well as our engineering specialists, who are already busy on the next large investments for Terre Haute in the USA and for Tiszaújváros in Hungary.

Challenges remain on all fronts for sure. Yet once again, I see Taghleef Industries in a stronger position than a year before.

Thank you, and let us keep the pace.

Ti news 2 Make the difference

Innovation is what differentiates a leader from a follower Steve Jobs

When I came into contact for the first time with Detlef Schuhmann, Tercé Henriquez and Dominic Leary, and had the opportunity to listen to them about the Taghleef project, the culture established by the team, its José Ángel Medina impressive evolution in recent years, and the idea of what the Ti Group Derprosa Managing Director would be endeavoring next, I immediately thought that Derprosa should definitely be part of this exciting project. More than one year later, we can proudly announce that Derprosa is part of the strongest powerhouse, worldwide, in the BoPP industry.

For 25 years, the Derprosa brand has been synonymous with technical excellence, innovation and quality, but mostly, its tailored solutions. The opportunity to team up with Ti adds the global distinctiveness to our DNA, opening a place under the motto “think globally, act locally”.

Beyond synergies, reach, efficiencies and scales, this stage requires of us, and at the same time gives us, a great opportunity to change our way of thinking, and action, in pursuit of a new goal: Return to the market a greater added value than Derprosa and Ti had provided independently in the past. It invites us to find a new level of excellence, to focus our efforts on continuous innovation in the constant search for new solutions, and above all, love what we do and those who do it.

For the old Derprosa, now Ti, today is a great opportunity to incorporate the best performances without losing our essence, service mindset, innovation, and creation of previously unknown needs, and promote them to bring our global solutions to each local market. For the current global-leading Ti, it’s a magnificent opportunity to extend the model of excellence to all market segments, and also incorporating to its proposal, a previously unattended and complementary product offering. In a nutshell, we’ll be adding the finest of each, so that the result is not two, but 4.

From here, I encourage you to visit this new member of the family, Ti, and see the enormous value that this powerful union will return to the market in the coming years. And that, no doubt, will make a difference.

Let´s film, let´s Taghleef!

New ERF Film MUS - a Top Film for VFFS Packaging for Coffee Packaging

Altacel is an innovative flexographic printer in the Netherlands who has printed the foil for Douwe Egberts (D.E. Master Blenders). In this the mission was to make a foil with a matt golden color, which could be used for quarto sealed packs for instant coffee. Altacel decided to make a tri-laminate with the Ti MUS as top film so that the packs could get the desired appearance. This ended into a foil with the right specifications for good and consistent runabilty on the packaging machine.

Taghleef Industries recently developed a slip- modified, white voided BOPP film, which is suitable for VFFS packaging: ERF 28 µm. This film is used for stand up pouches and will improve our customer’s cost-value position for applications in the baked goods, sweets and snack industries. ERF 28 µm pouches, laminated with our transparent standard coex film, TSS, were distributed to the visitors of Taghleef Industries at our Interpack booth. Cenadruck GmbH, a German based rotogravure printer, was our partner in this “exhibition pouch project“, and they were further supported by Janoschka GmbH and Verdener Keks, as well as Waffelfabrik Hans Freitag GmbH & Co.

EXTENDO™ XTMH Packaging Efficiency at its Best

The packages of nuts, which we distributed during the Interpack show, are an example of the long-standing cooperation between Ti and TCL. The package was made of a laminate comprised of EXTENDO XTMH (high barrier transparent BOPP film) and TSS (transparent coex BOPP), and it provides an efficient, cost-effective and high performance packaging solution for these types of products. Additionally, unlike most common barrier laminates, this package is made entirely of PP, which makes it fully recyclable. TCL is a UK-based provider of printed flexible packaging films. Established in 1999, their facilities are accredited to ISO 14001, ISO 9001 and BRC standards. TCL provides expertise in printing, coating, lamination, and the micro-perforation of films used for many well known food and non-food brands. TCL is a three time winner of the EFTA print awards.

SkinnyPack™ MMR - a Matte Film Flexible meets Rigid with Soft Release Packaging The use of cold seal for the packaging of heat sensitive food products, such as chocolate, has become quite a common solution over the years. This practice has obviously been supported by the development of different cold seal release films and lacquers in order to avoid any blocking phenomena during the use or storage of the converted reels.

Taghleef Industries, having already in its product portfolio a broad range of transparent films with very good cold seal release properties, has developed a new BOPP, cold seal release, matte film, MMR, because the market now requires a low luster, matte version that is able to maintain One of the most innovative molders in North America the same traditional cold seal release performance is IPL in Canada, who are reported to have supplied criteria. the very first in-mold labeled into North America. Responding to sustainability efforts to reduce wall thicknesses, Taghleef is partnering with IPL to promote the SkinnyPack™ concept, which is significant because the in-mold label itself becomes the wall of the container! The specialized labels are printed and die cut by the leading US-based, injection in-mold label supplier, Inland Label. SkinnyPack™ could be the ultimate thin wall container. One is left to wonder if this concept is more of a flexible packaging concept made rigid, or a flexible film hybrid of a rigid package. This concept is sparking significant interest amongst brand owners responding to innovative, sustainable (thinnest wall) packaging solutions, which stand up and out on the store shelf. MMR is a superior performing material, which is able to match an outstanding aesthetical aspect (both in terms of -like visual appearance and soft silky touch) and a very good cold seal release effect. MMR is available in 20µm, and has been specifically developed to be used in laminates for chocolate overwrapping solutions.

This new MMR can be used in lamination with ERD, a Taghleef Industries’ high performance, white voided BOPP film used in confectionery and other snack applications. Printed and laminated by SIT GROUP.

EXTENDO™ XTMV High Barrier In-Mould Labelling of Biodegradable Clear BOPP film with Enhanced Pots and Tubs with NATIVIA™ Films Moisture Barrier Performance Miko Pac is a packaging expert in injection of plastics for . Their slogan is “thinking out of the box”, and this is exactly what they did when they took part in this joint development project – a joint development that involved BASF with its Ecovio® biopolymer, Druckhouse Rahning for the manufacturing of the IML labels, and Taghleef Industries’ for the supply of NATIVIA™ PLA film. The working group used existing and well established technologies, designed for use with standard oil-based plastics, to produce a bio-based and compostable injection molded thin-wall and in-mold decorated pot for food packaging. The major step ahead was using the new, biodegradable and bio-based Ecovio® IS for injection molding, and the bio- based and compostable metallised NATIVIA™ PLA film for the barrier label.

Ecovio® and NATIVIA™ are widely used in packaging applications. However, a known characteristic of both materials is their poor barrier against moisture and gases, which does not allow their use for shelf stable food products. As a consequence, the team decided to use a vacuum metallised NATIVIA™ film for labelling the 0.6mm pot’s bottom and surrounding wall to provide barrier. Druckhaus Rahning, a leading printing house specializing in the manufacturing of labels, used their know-how to print the labels, by using a 5-color + lacquer reel-fed UV printer to produce both the wrap around and bottom labels. The measurement of O2 permeation at 25°C and 40% relative humidity, according ASTM F1927– 07, revealed that by adding the metallised PLA label, the O2 permeation was lowered to about 25% of the original Ecovio® O2 permeation value, and 10 times lower than standard PP tubs. Ecovio® consists of the compostable BASF polymer, Ecoflex®, and polylactic acid (PLA), which is derived from plant- based starch. The main areas of use for Ecovio® are plastic films such as organic waste , dual-use bags (first for shopping, then for organic waste), agricultural films, as well as paper-coating, shrink films, foam packaging and injection molded products. Products made of Ecovio® is for injection molding benefit from an optimum balance of rigidity and toughness. Flow behavior is easily adjusted according to the application – from medium to high flow requirements. NATIVIA™ biaxially oriented, bio-based and compostable PLA films are widely used in various food packaging applications, thanks to their high clarity, gloss, seal-ability and compatibility with existing packaging machines. To date, they had never been tested for manufacturing labels for injection molding.

Italian Schools Choose NATIVIA™ Films for Fruit Packs The EU program ‘Frutta nelle Scuole’ (Fruit at School) was first introduced in 2009, involving 870,000 children in 5,000 schools in Italy, and resulted with an increased consumption of fruits and vegetables among children. One of the supported initiatives consisted of distributing packs of ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables in primary schools to children between the ages of 6 and 11 years. Fruit packs are designed to be easily consumed “on the go” by pupils, and NATIVIA™ bio-based and compostable PLA films have been chosen for the pillow packs of fresh cut apples and pears, thanks to their performance and environmental benefits. Other varieties include oranges, kiwis, carrots, cherry tomatoes and fennels. Further information on the initiative can be found on: http://www.fruttanellescuole.gov.it/

Ti news 11 Focus: Digital printing

Taghleef, Les Etiquettes, Xeikon Integrated Partners in DigitaL IML

In-Mold Labeling (IML) is rapidly gaining popularity for decorating plastic containers. With In-Mould Labeling the label becomes an integral part of the container, applied during container molding and not added on at a later stage in the process. The result is eye-catching packaging that stands out on the shelves.

Brand owners are looking for ways to differentiate themselves in an attempt to defend their market share. Special IML versions of their packaging are a way of doing that. Container variety and diversification and promotional efforts are proliferating and as a consequence, shorter labels print runs became a reality, with the highest quality graphics. Conventional printing technologies struggle to provide affordable solutions for today’s demands for product launches, short runs and personalization. “Digital printing of in-mould labels can overcome the issues of conventional technologies and will enable further growth of the in-mold label market,” says Filip Weymans, Xeikon’s Director of Segment Marketing Labels & Packaging.

Xeikon NV is an innovator in digital printing technology. The company designs, develops and delivers web-fed digital color presses for labels and packaging applications, document printing, as well as commercial printing. Their presses utilize LED-array-based dry toner electrophotography, open workflow software and application-specific toners. Xeikon printing technology is well suited to In Mould Labels using Taghleef substrates, highlighting the value of the strong cooperation between Ti’s film solutions and Xeikon’s digital print technology in IML.

In today’s competitive IML landscape offering the highest level of quality and service is paramount. The only printer in North America dedicated solely to IML Labels production is a Canadian company, Les Etiquettes IML, who is dedicated to such service and quality. Xeikon digital print presses deliver both the high quality graphics and fast turnaround Les Etiquettes requires for certain high SKU or promotional IML projects, and even project prototyping.

Both Xeikon and Les Etiquettes trust Taghleef’s films for such jobs. An outstanding example container is the 0.5L container. The eye catching “red apple graphics” surrounded with a black background highlights stunning print capability. The smooth finish delivered by the “micro voided” LIH70 compliments the graphics, imparting a luxurious container look & feel. Another container is the smaller yoghurt fruit cup, where the fruit looks “good enough to eat”! Such shelf appeal and impact is attractive to brand owners to differentiate their products and catch the eye of consumers. This is what integrated solutions in IML can deliver.

Delivering Value in the Cut & Stack Label Market

The Cut and Stack Label (CSL) market is diverse and includes labels for beverages such as water, fruit juices, wine, and products for household cleaning. The traditional substrate in this market was paper-based, however as wet strength, gloss and chemical resistance requirements arose, superior performing BOPP-based labels entered the market. BOPP labels further enable improved graphics and are more recycle friendly and energy efficient than paper. As BOPP films were adopted, it was found that most CSL applications would need to use 2-side clay coated BOPP films to best match the similarities of paper through printing and labeling equipment. These films, while superior at the time, involved additional coating steps and raw materials, which added a price only afforded in premium applications.

Taghleef has developed an uncoated, opaque voided, BOPP film with new skin technology, which meets the conversion and processing demands of this market AND delivers the superior labeling performance. The value to our customers extends beyond the performance against paper, or versus a coated BOPP film’s superior graphics. Ti’s films are more recyclable and energy friendly, which is voiced as an increasingly important criteria by main-stream and private label brands, and large retail outlets.

In early 2014, Ti introduced CSL 281, which with its technology is positioned to quickly take a significant share of this market segment. The key attributes of this product are good in- line sheeting & feeding, improved graphics, reduced ink offsetting, and improved labeling performance. In just a few short months, the Ti Americas team commercialized the CSL 281 grade with select converting and labeling partners. The CSL 281 is available in nominal 75µ (49 gm/m2 unit weight) and 90µ (56 gm/m2 unit weight) thicknesses, and it complements Ti’s “best in class” transparent cut and stack film, CSL 411. CSL 411 is available in nominal 58µ thickness (53 gm/m2 unit weight) and offers the widest converting and operating window in the industry today. The Ti Global Label team is working to transfer this technology across regions. These films will be showcased at Labelexpo Americas and Pack Expo in Chicago, IL USA later this year.

Ti Americas Barrier Film Portfolio Evolution

The OPP Barrier Film market continues to evolve and expand. More packaged products are requiring extended shelf life and increasing the need for both clear and metallized barrier films. In the Americas, Ti has been growing sales and expanding our OPP barrier film portfolio (sealable & non-sealable metal, clear barrier), and we expect this trend to continue. The Ti Americas’ sealable metallized barrier films, which include MT and MTSW, have seen good growth in the past 18 months. These films are mainly utilized in moderate barrier applications, such as salty snacks, bakery and confections. This segment of our portfolio is a high priority, as we focus on increasing our barrier targets. Since this is a worldwide, multi-regional development program, we are utilizing all Ti technology platforms and expect to expand this portfolio in the near future. In our non-sealable metallized barrier films, including MXT and MPF, we are also experiencing growth in both North and South America. Both our domestic and international groups are having success using these products to replace metPET and foil, and to grow our supply into confectionery, nutritional, and baked goods applications. In the last Ti News, we wrote about the successes in our clear barrier portfolio (HXB, HBTX, and UHX). These products continue to grow in the snacks, bakery, and confectionery market segments, where our customers continue to desire both higher barrier and more sustainable versions of these products.

Ti opens HUB in central America

Taghleef Industries selected Latin America as a strategic growth region, and is demonstrating it through action by placing a warehouse for our customers to hold inventory in El Salvador. Through the years Ti has participated in Latin America through both good and bad times; with a stronger dollar and a weaker one; with higher import duties; through wars [Malvinas/Faukland islands] and through resin allocations. However, Ti is always present in the area, giving Latin America the importance it deserves. By continually participating in the region, we provide high quality films to key end users and , who have come to expect consistent delivery of Ti’s products, including high barrier films, which keep products fresh and protected from the environmental conditions, and allow packages to run efficiently at higher speeds on different packaging equipment. We currently have inventory stocking programs with key customers in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Santo Domingo. We have expectations to grow, since we understand the strategic importance of Latin America and trust the investments Ti has placed in the region.

EGL 38 Gaining Momentum

In a continuous effort to streamline production and optimize maximize value to customers, Taghleef Asia Pacific is continuously re-evaluating the product portfolio. As part of this effort EGL 38 with high yield, high opacity and gloss has been designed to replace EMG 35 and EMG 42. This rationalization of two older films into one newly designed enhanced product is an attractive offering to package designers. Of special interest to these package designers is the use of EGL 38 in horizontal form fill and seal (HFFS) applications requiring lower heat seal initiation temperatures. In applications such as ice cream and chocolates wrapping where heat from all sources must be minimized EGL 38 is gaining momentum.

EHD 35 Demonstrating Value in Multipacks

A favourite format of Salty Snacks and Chips for busy families is the “multipack.” The “multipack” conveniently offers families a package of individual single servings bundled in an attractive vertically formed filled and sealed (VFFS) over- package. In Australia and New Zealand EHD 35 is in use with the premier snack marketers. EHD 35’s superior stiffness and heat seal strength has allowed the VFFS over-package to be designed as a surface printed mono-web rather than the reverse printed lamination typically used. The EHD 35 mono-web structure saves material and conversion costs for the end- user as well as provides a brilliant white printing surface. This printing surface compares favourably with laminations used in competitive products. The attractiveness of this multipack is verified every day by consumers at the point of purchase.

Ti Bolsters its Commitment towards South Africa

Ti has been playing an active role in the growth & development of the South African Flexible Packaging Industry over the past several years. We enjoy good business relationships with key end users, as well as the converters. Our local partner, Flexible Packaging & Exporting Co. CC, has supported us to foster growth, expand market base, and establish long standing business relationships in South Africa.

Utilizing the expertise and services of Heneways Freight Services LLC, Ti established its first Bond Store in the African region at Edwinwales, Durban in June, 2013. The facilities we offer our customers at Bond Store include port clearing, storage, as well as customs and deliveries on call off. Our IT systems have been designed to provide our customers visibility of their stocks at the Bond Store, while the storage facility is designed to handle up to 1000 tonnes of film at any point in time. Ti seminar with Afripack team Processes are in place to deliver goods to our customers within 48 hours. Our Bond Warehouse at Durban helps us to further extend our services to our customers and increase our market share. In order to complement our efforts to the South African Flexible Packaging Industry, Ti organized technical seminars to our major customers during this year. The seminars were held at the “Makaranga, Durban” on the 12th and 13th of February, 2014, and were well received by our customers. The guests were made aware of the latest trends in the BOPP Food and Label segments, along with an innovative product range, which offers distinct advantages to both the converters and end users. Furthermore, Ti’s initiatives in providing packaging solutions that use renewable resources like NATIVIA™, and our quest for lowering our carbon footprint, were explained.

Ti and Positive Packaging A Story of Growing Together

Positive Packaging, UAE is one of the largest flexible packaging converters in the Middle East and one of Ti’s largest customers. Positive Packaging, UAE, with production sites in Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah, has partnered with Ti in key product development projects. To celebrate this long standing business relationship, Ti organized a full day seminar, “Innovative Workshop on New Generation Films”, at Bab Al Shams Desert Resort and spa in Dubai on 8th April 2014.

The event was attended by representatives of Technical, Sales and Operations from both sides, as well as representatives from Positive Packaging, India & Nigeria. It was an opportunity for Ti to keep the Positive Packaging team abreast of the recent developments within the organization, regarding the service models envisioned by Ti in the global arena. Also, specialists from theTi Global Team conducted presentations on our innovations and newly developed product ranges, such as EXTENDO™, NATIVIA™, Labels, and Metalized films, in addition to sharing their global experiences. The seminar created a platform for mutual exchange of ideas and thoughts on various market segments and packaging applications. The day ended with a fabulous dinner, on a marvelous evening under an open sky glittered by stars, with the enchanting view of desert dunes at Al Hadheerah restaurant. The Arabic hospitality was at full view, with a dazzling falconry display, a camel caravan, a horse show, some traditional music, and an amazing Tanoura dance. It was a casual atmosphere where the members of the Executive Management of Positive Packaging, as well as Ti, mingled with their teams to make the event most memorable, and strengthened the relationship for years to come.

World Tobacco Exhibition in Dubai

The Middle East is the fastest growing market for tobacco consumption in the world. Though it accounts for a small percentage of global consumption, the region still represents a substantially growing market due to its demographic strength and rising disposable income. The Middle East is also a region that is attracting much investment in facilities for the production and manufacturing of tobacco products. Dubai is considered to be a significant hub for tobacco exports and re-exports, mainly into Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the Levant markets. As the prominent player in the Middle East for BOPP films, it is a natural fit for Ti to enter the tobacco market with our innovative overwrapping solutions. Armed with the expertise gained from Ti Americas, Ti is well prepared to penetrate into other regions, especially the Middle East and Africa. Tobacco films from Ti meet the high standards required to perform on the latest high speed, tobacco wrapping machines. Our portfolio includes non-shrink, shrink, high shrink, as well as printable shrink tobacco films. The World Tobacco Exhibition in Dubai, which was held during 1-2 April, 2014 at the Dubai World Trade Center, was an ideal start for our efforts in the Middle Eastern markets, as this exhibition had a massive participation from the producers within the UAE.
