Sports, it has been said, is not only a manifestation of animal energy of surplus strength to develop more strength; it is, in addition, a safe and wholesome outlet for the aggressive spirit in human beings. Sports foster friendship and amity. Nor does the belief hold well any more that those who take part in sports or games would be no good at studies, and that each year their absence from the class or shortage of lectures would be condoned because they can either attend to their studies or be on the playing field for some game or the other.

The importance of sports and games is being increasingly recognised in India, from both the educational and social points of view. More and more funds are being allocated for encouraging sports in schools, colleges and universities; in fact, sports have become an essential part of the curricula.

Regular programmes are drawn up in all educational institutions to persuade as many students as possible, regardless of special aptitudes, to participate in games, and not merely watch matches occasionally to cheer up their favourite teams or attend the prize distribution functions at the end of a sports season.

It is felt that apart from some exceptional cases of students showing extraordinary talent and skill in certain games, or students who are expected to be high on the merit list in university examinations, most other students should play one game or other, not necessarily for achieving distinctions, but for the sake of sport.

Coaching camps were organised for Men teams in Football, Basket ball, Ball Badminton, Badminton, Cricket, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Chess, Carrom and Athletics. For Women Teams in Ball Badminton, Badminton, Volleyball, Throw ball, Tennikoit, Table Tennis, Chess, Carrom and Athletics. HAJEE KARUTHA ROWTHER HOWDIA COLLEGE 36 MAGAZINE 2014-2015 GLOBAL WARMING Global Warming refers to the rising average Temperatures of Earth's atmosphere and oceans, which began to increase In the late 19th century and is projected to continue rising. Since the Early 20th Century, Earth's average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 C (1.4 F), with about two thirds of the increase occurring. Since 1980, Warming of the climate system is unequivocal and scientist are more than 90% certain that most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of green house gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. These findings are recognized by the National Science Academies of all major industrialized nations.

Climate model projections are summarized in the 2007 Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) by the Intergovernmnetal panel on climate change (IPCC). They indicate that during the 21st century the global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 1:1 to 2:9oC (e to 5.2oF) for their lowest emissions scenario and 2.4o to 6.4oC (4.3o to 11.5oF) for their highest. The ranges of these estimates arise from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations.

An increase is global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation and a probable expansion of sub tropical deserts. Warming is expected to be strongest in the Arctic and would be associated with continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice – other likely effects of the warming include more request occurrence of extreme weather events including heat waves, droughts and heavy rainfall, species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes and changes in crop yields. Warming and related changes will vary from region to region around the globe, with projections being more robust in some areas than others. It global mean temperature increases to 4oC (7.2oF) above preindustrial levels, the limits for human adaptation for natural systems would largely be exceeded throughout the world. Hence, the ecosystem services upon which human livelihoods depend would not be preserved.

Most countries are parties to the United Nations Framework convention on climate change (UNFCCC) , whose ultimate objective is to prevent “dangerous” anthropogenic (i.e., human-induced) climate change. Parties to the UNFCCC have adopted a range of policies designed to reduce greenhouse gas Emissions and to assist in adaptation to global warming, parties to the UNFCCC have agreed that deep cuts in emissions are required and that future global warming should be limited to below 2.0oC (3.6oF) relative to the pre-industrial level. 2011 report of analyses by the United Nations Environment Programme and International Energy Agecny suggest that effort as of the Early 21st century to reduce emissions may be inadequately stringment to meet the UNFCCC's 2 C target.

HAJEE KARUTHA ROWTHER HOWDIA COLLEGE 42 MAGAZINE 2014-2015 Suruliyar Project Suruliyar Hydro – Electric Power Station in Theni district is the eighteenth hydro – electric power station in the Tamilnadu Electricity Board. Suruliyar is a tributary to the Vaigai River and has its origin in the hill ranges called Pachaikumachi which separates the Cumbum valley from the Periyar catchment. The catchment area has 38.85 sq.km consists of various sub-basins and with an average inflow of 71.46 million meter water. By building storage dams and weirs across various streams, the water is taken through the power tunnel and thence_through-penstock to generate 114 million unit of energy every year. The scheme was sanctioned by the Planning Commission in May 1973. The estimation of the scheme cost Rs.25.06 crores.

Description of the Project :

The direct inflow from the catchment area of the Highwavys together with the pumped flow from the Highwavys diversion weir leads into the reservoir formed by Manalar dam through an inter connecting tunnel of 1406 meter length. The water if Manalar dam leads through another inter connecting tunnel of 2928 meter long to the reservoir formed by Venniar Aru dam. The small storage of Venniar weir leads into the Venniar dam through a baby tunnel. Another inter-connecting tunnel of 2015 meter length and through a small length of open channel brings water from Venniar dam to the Eravangalar Forebay dam.

From the Eravangalar Forebay Dam a lined power tunnel of 803 meter length carried the water to the 30 meter deep surge shaft and from thereby Butterfly Valve House through 30 meter length steel lined tunnel. From the valve house, the penstock of 2904 meter length with internal diameter varying from 1.5 to 1.0 meter carries water to the power station.

Civil Work

One of the special features of the project is the comparatively large volume of civil works involved. Three masonary dams and two weirs were constructed to store and divert the water for ultimate power generation. The Highwavys Dam is the upper most reach of the project is located amongst picturesque scene surrounded by forest and tea garden. The dam is part of a masonary and rest is earthern dam.

A pump house located downstream side of the Highwavys diversion weir would pump surplus water from the Highwavys stream back into the Highwavys dam with the help of two giant – sized pumps of 525 HP capacity each for further use of power generation. The Mannalar Venniar and Eravangalar dams are purely of masonary construction. To interconnect the reservoir tunnels for a total length of 7454 meter have been mined in the rocky mountain and these tunnels have been lined with concrete whenever necessary.

HAJEE KARUTHA ROWTHER HOWDIA COLLEGE 43 MAGAZINE 2014-2015 Power Plant

The power house is located at an elevation of 440 meter near Vannathi parai. A single 35 MW power generating unit with horizontal shaft peltron, turbine was installed. The entire generating plant and turbine were imported from Australia. The turbine has the capacity of 50,000 HP designed for power generation. The generation is provided with carbon – di – oxide fire protection. An auto – control system was provided for the first time by the Tamilnadu Electricity board in this power station. Any fault occurring during the operation is indicated in a luminous window enabling easy and quick rectification. The power station is connected to the nest of the grid through a 110 KV link by tapping the nearly Periyar – Kayathar 110 KV DC line. Suruliyar Hydro – Electro Project was commissioned on 28 August 1998. With the commissioning of the Surliyar Hydro – Electro Station, the installed capacity of the Tamilnadu Grid would be enhanced by 35 MW. The power station gives relief in the peak hour period is of immense use during the summer period to improve the voltage condition in Madurai.
