    G-SEC WORKING PAPER No.22 The prevalence of the worship of Goddess Lin Guniang by the ethnic Chinese in southern Thailand TAMAKI, Mitsuko * December, 2007 Keywords ethnic Chinese, Thailand, folk religion, charity, ethnicity Abstract Goddess Lin Guniang is the characteristic deity worshiped by the ethnic Chinese in southern Thailand. From the 14th to 18th centuries, there was an Islamic kingdom named Patani in southernmost Thailand. Today, Malay Muslims still account for approximately 80% of the population there. In the 16th century, Lin Daoqian, a Chinese pirate, defected to Patani from Chaozhou in southern China and converted to Islam. It is believed that Lin Guniang, his younger sister, went there to take him back to China. But she failed and hung herself. It is unclear when this worship began, however it likely began in the late 19th century. At that time southern Thailand saw a massive ingress of Chinese immigrants, and a cultural conflict between Chinese and Malays affected this worship. The worship of Lin Guniang is prevalent in southern Thailand due to the establishment of Shantang, a Chinese charity foundation, after the 1950s. Recently, Lin Guniang has been introduced to “Dejiao,” a Chinese religious association, in southern Thailand and northern Malaysia through the network of the ethnic Chinese. Because Shantang and Dejiao originated in Chaozhou, it is thus supposed that Chaozhou ethnicity is the main factor leading to the prevalence of this worship. * Visiting Researcher at Center of Overseas Chinese Studies of Takushoku University. FI G U RE 1: Red title document: “Shenzhen Urban Village Master Plan (2019-2025)” officially passed on March 27, 2019 INTRODUCTION The Shenzhen local government released “Shenzhen Urban Village Master Plan (2019-2025)” for public opinion on November 5th, 2018, emphasizing its “Urban Village Comprehensive Renovation” (城中村综合整治), for the first time shifting from its previous focus on “Urban Renewal” 拆除重建城市更新( ). This master plan was officially passed as a red title document (红头文件, any officially signed policy by any level of government) shown in Figure 1 on March 27, 2019. In this document, the local government identifies a 99-square-kilometer urban village area in Shenzhen to be a Comprehensive Renovation Zone, which is about one third of total urban village land area in Shenzhen (320 square kilometers). This document prohibits the traditional demolition approach for urban village redevelopment for at least the next eight years and encourages urban village regeneration through improving existing infrastructure and rental housing options. In spite of rental housing apartment projects have already started by local real estate developers in 2015, this document for the first time officially promotes renovation rather than demolition, which reflects a huge shift in political will. This paper examines both the traditional demolition approach and the recent renovation approach to redevelop urban villages in Shenzhen, and argues that although it is still too soon to judge the effectiveness of the renovation approach in practice, the renovation approach is worth pressuring and is better than the removal approach in the sense of preserving urban villages as a historical asset of Shenzhen’s urban fabric.

    Shenzhen’s Urban Villages: Surviving Three Decades of Economic Reform and Urban Expansion Da Wei David Wang Master of Arts in History 2008 San Diego State University School of Social Sciences This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Western Australia 2013 Abstract The Chinese urban village, or chengzhongcun, is a unique urban communal entity that emerged since the economic reform in the early 1980s and the subsequent rapid urbanisation. The formerly agrarian villages were quickly absorbed by expanding cities, or emerging new cities as in the case of Shenzhen, and transformed into urban villages. In Shenzhen, the urban village is a zone of ambiguity because the urban villagers are warranted by the Chinese Land Administration Law to maintain their collective ownership of land, which is a special privilege not granted to the average urban citizen whose property ownership in fact takes the form of long-term leases of up to seventy years. The urban villagers were able to quickly adapt to the their urban surroundings and capitalise on their unique legal status to generate rental income through self-constructed dense rental apartment buildings, which have housed most of Shenzhen’s migrant population for the last thirty years. In addition, the urban villagers’ collective identity and organization, such as the village joint stock company, have made the villages semi-autonomous zones in the city. Due to the original villagers’ attempts at self-government and the great difficulty in regulating the migrant population who largely resides in the urban villages, the urban villages are a favorite target for local government which regards the zone of the urban village as an eyesore.

I explore urban spaces that are associated with migration in China, such as urban villages and employer-supplied housing (ESH), and trace their roles in the creation of the urban narratives of migrants. Thus I am able to describe the construction of a new form of identity, which I term ‘spatial identity’. I contend that spatial identity plays a pivotal role in questions of social integration and urbanization, and requires more comprehensive study. For this reason, I opted to explore this type of identity, utilizing a multi-method research design, based not only on formal interviews, but also on walking interviews, cognitive maps drawings of different scales and photographic “re-narration” of migrants’ “own city”.
